Has anyone tried the Vive Pro with Elite Dangerous?

I dusted off my Vive and spent a a couple hours on it and it’s fun and flying upside down over a planet surface and trying to land with flight assist off kinda messed with my stomach. Combat is definitely easier with the VR though, because it’s easier to keep my eyes on the enemy and line up my shots. Reading text is difficult though and I found text barely readable. Does anyone have any experience with the Vive Pro? Does the improved clarity add a lot to the experience?

Vive Pro is basically an over priced Samsung Odyssey. Avoid. Wait for the Pimax 5K+.

Your pic doesn't even show a Vive Pro screenshot....Just a standard Vive in the lower right. I'd wait for some real world experience posts before jumping on the Pimax, high res and high FOV - its going to be demanding.

The Vive Pro is over priced for what it is mind you. I cannot argue with that.

Hence the reference? It's the exact same OLED panels. But by all means, if someone wants to splurge on overpriced hardware, go right ahead:

They are indeed - different lenses though... different user experience. The Samsung is also not available in the UK...

As I say, I can't deny that the Vive Pro is over priced. It is. That said, it looks fantastic but needs a lot of power to drive it in games like Elite.

Check the review. The Vive Pro is inferior to the Samsung Odyssey. With Pimax 5K+ just around the corner I really can't recommend the Vive Pro to anyone unless money isn't an issue, and they can't be bothered to wait or import a Samsung Odyssey. This opinion is related to Elite: Dangerous (seated VR) only of course.

And you can't really recommend a Samsung Odyssey to anyone who is based in Europe / UK - the device simply is not officially sold in those locations.

Personally speaking I wouldn't make my mind up on anything based on one Youtube video, that said I will watch it when not at work.

I have nothing against the Samsung HMD, it looks a great bit of kit but sadly is not an option for many people. I'd have purchased one months ago if it were. There is no "waiting" for the current Samsung HMD, it is not releasing in Europe / the UK. I wouldn't import any electronics in that price band, the import duty would be huge for a start and the warranty void. You cannot really describe that as "can't be bothered" - it's common sense.

If the Pimax devices work out I'd be very tempted to sell my Pro without the base stations to someone wanting an upgrade at a cheap price. Pretty similar to the GPU upgrade merry go round.

Besides, the Op asked "Has anyone tried the Vive Pro with Elite Dangerous?" Not for a debate over HMDs and which people think are best or even the best value for money.

Based on current reviews, neither the Vive Pro nor the Samsung Odyssey (Europe or no) will have much appeal much longer. ;)

We'll see, the Pimax devices certainly have the FOV I and many others crave, not so sure about anything else. I'll personally be waiting for some real world reviews of it running Elite on hardware similar to that of my own. Of course I'm also waiting to see what Oculus announce (if anything) in regard to a CV2. The last I heard it looked to have a FOV of ~140, so not far off what the Pimax devices run without distortion issues. One thing I hate is distortion in VR.

Certainly an interesting time for VR just now.

Lots of speculation around concerning the new pimax headsets. However if like me 99% of your vr time is spent in Elite be sure to wait for reviews that are tested in this game. I did hear of one pimax tester saying it is great in most games but he'll be keeping his vive pro for Elite dangerous as the lcd display is a bit washed out with black scenery (space is very black). Maybe now is not an ideal time to purchase a pro with pimax release coming soon. But if it reviews poorly with elite dangerous then vive pro is the best available in UK.

I've got the Vive Pro and play Elite with it. It's a FANTASTIC visual update. I mean seriously, it's enough. I don't think I need more (not that I'd refuse it). Really feels like you can see all the detail the game intends you to see, any more and you'd see the polys etc.

Very clear, stars are stunning, planet detail is breathtaking. Such an improvement over CV1. Lots of hope now that VR's potential is incredible

You upgraded from the Rift to the Vive Pro ?

How does the reprojection compare to ASW ?

That's a subjective question. I loved ASW. I found the graphical glitches were very minimal, and tolerable, and the benefit of pure 90fps was amazing. Others can't stand the graphical glitches.

Therefore I really miss ASW. Reprojection is just the equivalent of ATW. I.e. when you turn your head, you don't see judder. So comparing it to ASW doesn't make sense.

I also upgraded from Rift to the Pro.

While on the Rift I always tried to set my GFX setting to eliminate ASW as much as possible. Not due to a dislike of ASW, because in some games it is excellent, but due to the hallmark 'minor stutter' or 'hitch' when ASW enabled / disabled while playing Elite. For some reason Elite seems to have issues with ASW meaning that it gets enabled / disabled more regularly than most games, even at low settings. Personally speaking, the resulting hitches drove me bonkers and were impossible to eliminate without disabling ASW while playing Elite.

While SteamVR offers no alternative to ASW the Vive Pro has a good enough resolution that I'm able to back off many of my GFX settings, in particular super sampling to 1.0x, and gain a much clearer image quality compared to what I had while gaming with my Rift. My current settings (although I am still tweeking) maintain a native 90 FPS for 90 - 95% of the time. The only real issues I've noted were while driving an SRV with a friend which resulted in frame drops, however while driving the SRV on my own my frame rate remained stable...

There really is no comparison between 'Reprojection' and 'ASW' they're two different things. ASW in my opinion is far superior but in honestly my view is that a native 90 FPS is much better.

The thing I miss about the Rift most is actually Dash. None of the third party SteamVR apps come close.

Other things I miss about the Rift which are not Elite related are the controllers and the overall weight of the system. The Vive wands really are horrid and unconfortable to use for exended periods. The battery life is shocking as well, I have to charge them before every session just in case they run out half way through.

So commanders, I would like to purchase a new VR headset, I have a Vive at the moment, I don't play Elite with it much as IMO the text detail is so bad.

I would like to upgrade my VR so I can play Elite in VR.
Thinking of a Vive Pro, from research the text looks loads better, I am also upgrading my graphics card from a 980 to 2080ti and base mother-board & i7 so I would also be able to use super-sampling on this setup to boost graphics a tad more.

I am also tempted with the Pimax 5k+ I love the fact of extra FOV but wonder if this would even push my new GTX too hard, also worried about the black levels as after research other 5k+ owners says the blacks are washed out added to how long do they take to arrive.

What are the thoughts of Vive Pro & 5k+ commanders here please, which way should I go?

I’d wait and see which one does eye tracking better...

I'd read this thread if I were you - the OP presents an honest perception of a users experience with the Rift, Vive Pro and 5K+.

Seems rather pointless for anyone wanting to upgrade primarily for use with Elite, I very much doubt Elite will support eye tracking in combination with VR any time soon if ever.

I have jut upgraded from the rift to the Vive pro, I also have a Pimax on the way. Why did I go with a Vive Pro.. Well, I needed the controllers and the Lighthouses for use with the Pimax as their stuff will be a long way away before it is completed and delivered. When ready i will have a 4 lighthouse setup..

The vive pro is awesome for Elite, has great colour reproduction and maybe slightly more fov than the rift. It is much clearer than the rift, but still suffers from an awful amount of god rays. I am going to try the lens upgrade as I have been informed that this will reduce the god rays substantially. i am also quite skeptical as to the quality or reliability of the Pimax and don't want to be without a decent headset should I be forced to send the Pimax back for repairs etc..

One thing I noticed is that I do not need my glasses for the Vive Pro, I use the insert from VR Optician and have them but they actually make the display blurry in the Vive Pro, whereas in the rift they are perfect..

Even the Vive pro will stress your PC quite a bit.. I am running I7 @ 5ghz, 32GB ram and a 2080ti and still cannot run the system at a constant 90fps at ultra settings.. Especially when there are a lot of ships around, CZ for example.. I prefer not to use the motion smoothing. I have also used the 3dmitigo settings to remove haze etc..

The colours are awesome, the 'feel' of space is much better than the rift, but there are still god rays and SDE

I will also say that Arizona Sunrise looks absolutely awesome on the Vive Pro... The colours are far more vibrant and vivid compared to the rift.. However, if this is someones first foray into VR I still recommend the rift... The software, especially dash, and the ease of use are far better than the steam setup. If Rift would release their software for use with the Vive pro I would purchase in a heat beat, it is that much better..

I couldn't agree more, the overall 'Oculus' experience is so much more polished than any other companies. I'd move back to them the minute they get serious about playing catchup in the hardware department. I really do miss Dash etc.

The GearVR lens upgrade really is a must for the Pro. Those stock lenses are utter junk, small sweet spot and they make the visuals look like someone smeared something all of the screen. Honestly, I thought the CV1 lenses were 100% better and I thought they were pretty rubbish compared to my DK2 experience (visually).

You'll also notice that 100% on the SteamVR SS slider provides more 'per eye resolution' than the device natively has, sometimes it can help to dial that back to something more akin to the native per eye res of the device if you want to hit closer to a native 90FPS. Trust me, it'll still look great!

Do you have this behavior where it tabs away from Elite to the SteamVR UI when launching ED? I never had this with my Rift, but both the Samsung Odyssey+ (a wmr headset) and my Vive Pro do this, where they'll tab away from the game as it's launching.

It's super irritating with the Vive Pro, because I can't get it go back to Elite without fumbling around for the handy twiddle.

Super easy fix mate, use JoyFocus.jhk ( search will find it ), it is a small program that uses your joystick to re-focus the elite main screen, I will not play Elite without it !! Works really well, I have the Warthog and my Fanatec CS all connected at the same time, so there are LOTS of joysticks available etc.. Joyfocus handles them all.. I have it programmed to return focus using the warthog throttle, no need to find a wand etc...
