Has colonisation pushed Cmdrs out of open play?

So the numbers in game from steam are significantly (+4k daily on average) up since Trailblazers was launched , but I'm fairly certain encounters in Open have not followed the same trend. It follows that they are either in PG or Solo.

I'm normally in open or in one of the big groups, but because of Trailblazers I've found that for an activity as simple as hauling, I can manage it with a bare bones interface like a controller instead of my HOTAS, which allows me to get in a bit more time by being able to use laptop etc, but I struggle to fly well without my desktop controls (can't really even do PvE) so I'm now flying in solo unless I'm at my desktop

It would be an embarrassment for another player to see how badly I fly on controller 😂

"Well I've never been ganked," does not help me when I'm being ganked, thanks.

Has anyone else noticed how the most popular posters on this forum board, as well as people who play like once a month, always have some sort of "Well, I've never..." story to try to explain away things that are being posted about by multiple other CMDRs? 😂
Yes but I put it down to how large an area we all play in and how many different things there are to do.

I don't know if I fit in any of these categories; I could tell you my "I've never been ganked" story, but it's not for lack of trying. I've had my share of experiences with gankers, some more annoying than others, and I can confirm they do exist ;) and can pose a problem for certain, mostly inexperienced, CMDRs. However how one deals with them is one's own choice and responsibility. I won't reiterate the possibilities here (the neccessary information is readily available), let me just say: Gankers are part of the game, for better or worse, and there are ways to deal with them, one just has to learn them - other ways than "git gud" too. Complaining about them endlessly, asking to punish them, or calling them names, psychos or other terms isn't one of the possibilities.

Again: Not a git gud post; I'm certainly not gud and never will be. But in the end, one has to make their peace with the existence of gankers and choose one's personal way to deal with them. Or move on. Everything else is better done in that hotel where, so I have heard, you can never leave.

I'm doing all my colony work in open, haven't seen you yet! I load in places with low traffic, then leave the bubble by quite a bit to unload, pretty sure I won't see any player other than my alt, who is also loading on the laptop next to me.

Got a reasonably large friends list, which covers a large demographic...PvPers, gankers, streamers, new Cmdrs, old kickstarter Cmdrs, casual and hardcore Cmdrs.
On any given day roughly 50% are in open, 25% in PG and 25% in solo.
During a CGs this changes to roughly 20% in open (but can be way lower depending on the CG), 25% in PG and 55% in solo...even the gankers who gank CGs then switch to solo to contribute to the CG (oh the irony :D)

What I've noticed since Trailblazers was released is that a large proportion are playing in PG or solo and the number of open players is less than 10%, sometimes 0%...even Cmdrs who are normally open play have retreated to PG or solo.
I'm assuming that trade routes for things like CMM Composites are being treated like a CG....high traffic, gankers etc.
Anyone else noticed more people not playing in open since Trailblazers dropped?
been playing in open mostly... even doing powerplay.

Not really, what it has done is scatter them to the four winds and out of the usual player hotspots while they're off hauling their stuff in some plee parp sector as-s 420-69 backwater system where you'll never find them, or else whatever stations still have whatever stuff they need in stock.

I even managed to get a little yarring done the other day by staking out one of those good supply systems.

That and...
- Connection issues. Seems much better in solo (my experience lately, I have been using that, or switched to Horizon when I do space related stuff only).

oh but you're wrong. Accepting the game you have instead of whining about the game you want is a form of gitting gud.

Would make sense to be honest. I can't think of any reason whatsoever why hauling goods to a station would be better in open where you've got a timer that wipes your claim if you exceed it. Certainly for the first station you absolutely wouldn't want to risk being interrupted.
Yeah, this is true. Last weekend I was building my first outpost and got jumped by some crazy Cobra while carrying 780 tons of steel. I was like, really? Somebody is so desperate to snatch few tons of steel from me while I'm trying to build this thing all by myself and the clock is ticking? LOL.

Well I will add that I have played in Open almost exclusively since the PP 2.0 release, and entirely for the colonisation work I've done so far. The only time recently I have switched to a PG was for some hauling for the Trailblazer Echo CG. In all the time I've done PP and colonisation in Open....I'm yet to encounter another player. Period. Players are out there, of course, doing their stuff, but it goes to show that there are many vagaries that impact on encountering other players - everything from the spreading out of players, timezone differences, P2P networking, block lists, friend lists etc etc.

But regarding the OP's point - I don't think most players have been 'driven' from Open per se (although perhaps some have elected to go PG or solo, to avoid the risk of gankers around construction sites) - there's a lot of other factors in play that can result in not encountering anyone anyway. Plus colonisation has now spread everyone out even more than before, as others have suggested. I've found I can generally plonk my carrier around 2-7Ls from my offload point, and that means there's precious little opportunity for someone to interdict me anyway, even if they were lying in wait (even the NPC pirates can't get into position in time either).

Perhaps Colonisation has finally succeeded in doing what the gankers always advised other players to do?

Maybe just getting on and doing something without pointless interactions is far too attractive?

Me? I'll play in open when I'm not doing anything that matters, although, for the places I normally lurk, running into another player, let alone a potentially hostile one, is close enough to zero to be inconsequential.

I've not been ganked for years... Not successfully, anyway.

But I do have a secret formula - all my ships can survive long enough to escape a single attempt, they all have shields and strong hulls, and, best of all, if I don't want to be disturbed, in PG I go!

Take the ganker's advice, get out of open and enjoy playing with friends instead.

One other thing to consider is that the most prolific posters on this forum have been playing for years, learned to fly, evade or fight, and are not ashamed to tailor their game to their way of playing.

Shortly thereafter, the Pilots' Federation introduced an official ranking system to reflect the number of combat victories achieved by each of its members. Pilots who accumulated the largest number of kills were awarded the title of Elite – a citation that became highly coveted among independent pilots. Over time the organisation's ranking system has expanded to cover multiple professions, becoming the universal litmus for determining pilot skill.

Interesting replies...so looks like a combination of client/server stability and hauling with no interactions are the main reasons.

I'm doing all my colony work in open, haven't seen you yet!
I'm exclusively an open Cmdr...even if it's detrimental to a given task like a CG.
I don't think you're on my friends list and combined with the large bubble means we have not crossed paths...yet.

The same people tend to respond to forum threads so im not sure the replies are that representative of much, in all honesty open is pretty pointless so it wouldnt take much to "push" people to PG play (slight risk of wasting time would totally be enough) - overall I doubt there is a particularly meanginfull reason for the change and many people wont even have noticed (e.g. my friends list is from years of playing in PG so there never was anyone on that list playing in open).

I love that you keep a day just for Mauve Adders. That level of planning and organisation completely puts me to shame, though I am thinking of a special tub for ganks.
