Has the Forum Meta changed?

Hi all,

I noticed something. Something that got me worried.

Back in the day when people wanted to make their posts extra important they used to write "First off, I love this game...". Then things started to go into the "I have been playing since beta" direction with the occasional "1984 player here". Then came polls. Polls to underline or undermine nearly every aspect of forum life. Next, things started to gravitate towards "bacon" and writing open letters.

Nowadays when you want to make an extra impact it seems you need to wirte "I have 2000 hours of gameplay" or "I'm a streamer myself".

Why is that, I wonder? Why do people need an ante statement so to say in order to make their writings more meaningful? Wasn't bacon enough? Weren't polls?

I'm worried about what will come next...

I am responsible for the internet, and I have no idea what you mean.

You have to try and convince everyone reading your post that you're crazy hardcore long time fan (longer than anyone else).

You then have to boast about how much money you've spent on the game so far and bonus if you bring up the exact date of your first kick-starter donation and/or put that in your signature.

You have to convince them that you care what they think even though you've already made up your mind and your opinion is the only right one (polls).

You have to pander that other opinions do matter to you and you understand their opinions and they have merit (they dont and you dont care because see above).

You have to be passive aggressive to any comments you dont agree with because direct communication is frowned upon in the forum less someone's feelings be hurt.

You need to make any and all thoughts about playing a different game known to FD via an open letter. Like anyone cares why you're particular interests dont jive with the game (nobody does).

With that stuff covered you can then talk about how you stream - implying that people care how you play and maybe even depend on how you play to live. You are responsible for the happiness of untold numbers of other people who live vicariously through your exciting and fulfilling streaming of Elite Dangerous.

What's up next?

Bring up how many millions of meters you've SRV'd on worlds without needing to repair.

How many rolls of level 5 engineer mods you've done.

Include a picture of you wearing as many different articles of clothing purchased from the store with Elite stuff printed on them.

Write your post like you're writing a college entrance essay written as if it was personally to FD or particular employees.

Include shout outs to a number of other people you believe adds weight to your argument (it wont).

Start off every post with a link to an online petition site so everyone reading can go sign the petition (aka waste your time).

Make sure you post establishes you as the "average" player before dropping your agenda on everyone to ensure nobody can disagree (this wont fool anyone).

Make a new thread every time your previous thread gets buried into page 2. Link to it in the opening post so people think you're the manager of a mega-thread.

Start your posts off by commenting how negative everyone else's posts are and how content you are with the game and how FD is managing the game and how you just wish everyone else could be as happy as you are and that it's just a game and we should all be thankful for being given what we have.

Or maybe in the future the posts will just be links to people's social media sites because so many people can't live without the constant approval and interest of others that it would just be easier to pipe you over to their brain vomit than to re-post most of it in this forum to convince you of how you should take their opinions seriously and that anything they say matters.

I've got 1000+ hours in this game and that justifies my opinion as being educated and therefore valid.

It's a tactic used by public speakers, and I agree with it generally, to communicate their credentials to the audience at the start of their speech in order to earn their trust aka I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Buddy.... Bro.... Stick with me here.....

How many times have you met one of those public speakers who claimed X amount of experience and didn't know what the hell they were talking about?

It's because if they knew what they were talking about they'd still be in their original profession, and not forced to make a living as a public speaker.

Not that there aren't knowledgeable public speakers for X and Y whatever out there, just aknowledging that they're the exception to the rule. :D

Im a game developer and.......

So last year..... Just going to /ign because I cbb to educate tweenies on the hottest new memes. [redface]

and i came here to learn something new on forum-pvp.

@OP: i love this game, and i have spend over 2000 hours on these forum, i even have an android mod for it, and all polls tell me that i need to get into streaming - but grinding words and random meaning generation really turn me off lately.

Every time I've pointed out how long I've been on this forum, the idea being that maybe, just maybe I might (and I stress might) have a slightly more experienced opinion than the person I'm replying to ... I've had "No-one cares how long you've been on this forum for" and "That doesn't make you special or any more important than me" and while they are quite right to remind me, and yes, my tone at times has been aggressive (I'm not afraid to admit when I am wrong), and I'm not the best communicator ... the reactions have pushed me to change my writing style on this forum.

So yeah, I am not surprised if people change how they write on here.

I always look at the poster forum rank, this would give me an idea of 'experience' etc..

Could someone stream me some bacon?

I'm going to do this over the weekend, you have inspired me. I will sit outside of a sun and use my USB extension to put the webcam next to a pan of frying bacon but will also alternate between that and baked bacon with real Canadian maple drizzled across it.

I'm not a monster though, I won't eat it front of you.

You may have to listen to my five year old whine over it not cooking fast enough though.

I liked the old meta better. Forum users should dedicate less of their time and resources toward things like forum re-balancing and instead focus their attention on adding more depth to the forum experience. All I do is tap tap tap at my keyboard all evening, press the reply button and go. There's no feeling of reward for what I'm doing, there's no sense of progression. How is any of this going to help me to get a new chrome paintjob for my Sidewinder?

Occasionally a user comes and aggressively criticises what I've had to say and I feel like this is harsh and unfair and I can't believe that FDev would allow such pointless conflicts in their forum environment when I was expecting to just enjoy my time posting all day without any of this so called 'discussion'.

I'd like to request that FDev introduce a PvE option for the forum so that I can post my views without having to constantly defend them from these criticising griefers.

1: first off, the word meta has been thrown so much that it too rarely makes sense.

2: people trying for attention will try to use the latest terms of sentence or such, to lift themselves above everyone else, this is nothing new.

so no, nothing has really changed, only what people perceive as important, which, like always, may or may not be relevant or realistic.

If you could do it in front of your dog, and dub a voice over the dog, then feed the bacon to the cat, that'd be great! :)
