Have the networking issues been resolved in 3.0? Is it worth winging up?

Last time I played ED it was when multicrew came out. I jumped into my friend's ship and was immediately exposed to some of the worst glitchy, jumping, discombobulating mess that I've experienced in multiplayer for a few years. We had previously had few problems when playing in wings. But just multicrew didn't work. I haven't bothered playing since.

Previous attempts at wings with other people were just as unsatisfying. We had instancing issues (not being able to get into the same instance) or sync issues (two of us blew up a ship that the other was still attacking and was being attacked by for minutes afterwards. Then it reappeared for us two and we blew it up again). The friends I was playing with didn't play again.

With a couple of new people interested in playing, I'm keen to try again and have been holding out until this new release. I'm more than a little concerned that it's going to be an extremely disappointing experience once again.

Has anyone experienced an improvement in the multiplayer experience or am I in for more of the same?

Played last night. The answer is: no, the issues haven't been fixed. We got caught by the invisible wing member bug. It is:

Two players are in the one instance. Player 2 can see the other's ship flying around and then can see their SRV when player 1 transferred into that. Player 1 is informed that player 2 is hundreds of kms away and can't see them only hundreds of metres away. Player 2 drives up to player 1. Player 1 can't see player 2. Player 2 drives into player 1. Player 1 says: "oww I saw that. An invisible force just crashed into me."

That's some laughably bad multiplayer for software that is still in active development for over 3 years. I'm kind of impressed that no-one has bothered to fix it yet. It happens frequently - so easy to reproduce. We resolved the issue by logging out and in again but it's a real dampener on what was otherwise an excellent experience.

It is as a pebble in a shoe

:p

There are minor les still, but I've personally always had smooth multiplayer when I've done it. The netcode problems are very dependent on the quality of all wing members network speed. I'm not condoning that there are still issues, I'm just stating the situation as I see it for the op.

The thing with ED multiplayer is, setting it up is tedious. All people in the wing should check that they have either Upnp enabled (frowned upon because of security issues), otherwise have port forwarding enabled (set up in router and in the windows firewall and in ED itself) and if they are using an IPV6 connection, to make sure that it is native IPV6 (which it isn't with a lot of internet providers here unless you call them and have it changed to one)

Having done all that, it "usually" works...

Edit: Why we don't have a sticky regarding optimal networking set up is beyond me

I have occasional problems winging up but for the most part it works fine for me. Can't comment on multicrew as I don't use it

I'm keen to hear more, before I recommend Elite to a friend...

Could it be that multiplayer doesn't work so well when using the SRV and/or multicrew? But does mostly work with just wings?

Or is it planets where it's more likely to glitch?
