Yes there have, because:
- there are three game modes;
- all game modes affect a single shared galaxy state;
- there are no corps / clans / guilds;
- travel takes too long;
- the galaxy is too big;
- there's no player market;
- there's no player / player credit transfer;
- it's not *just* an MMO;
- there's no player driven economy;
- players can lose a complete ship through lack of rebuy;
- etc.
1. Three game modes, sharing a single BGS, bad design decision from the get-go.
2. No corps/clans/guilds is a big letdown for who wants to play with their friends. Makes no sense roleplay-wise, in 2017.
3. Travel takes too long / galaxy is too big, which is awesome from a simulator point of view, but let's face it, making people waste TIME is bad game design. Going to BP or SagA* gets old after the first 30 jumps. Black screens are bad for the eyes too. Believe me.
4. There's no player driven economy/market or cred transfer, that's lazy design. Well we still have 6 of those 10 development years, so…
5. It's not just an MMO, I'd be cool with it. If it wasn't for point 1. And people exploiting solo/PG to escape consequences.
6. People can lose a ship for lack of rebuy, I'm totally for it. I'm actually against rebuys. Killed? Go get another ship. Immersion and all that.
Now I've truly loved ED and it's still (one of the) best space game(s) around. The Devs though hanged their hats up where their hands can't reach. Bold decisions without the proper contemporaneous MMO experience to back them up. It's gorgeous, Stellar Forge is Nobel material, ship piloting is so awesome.
All of this gets old because of meh game mechanics and lack of RPG diversity. It's a game afterall. Give guns to the players but give highwake, 15s Menu Log, Block, overlook CLog…
…a simple logoff timer would solve?
Unlikable, 10000 alpha damage cops?
Suck it up and separate the BGS?
An enormous galaxy with no diversity and the same things to see? Is space really like that? We don't know, right? Why not a bit of risk and use imagination to fill in the gaps?
Anyway.
It is a beautiful experience.
