Have you read the DDF archive?

Boredom factor.

Boys to men

It's part of the process of staged release of information.
Many search functions are unimpressive in their utility, including the one attached to this variety of forum software.
It's education you're passing on. You will learn things as you teach others.
That learning is a privilege, pass it up at your cost.

To be quite honest I find bad-tempered responses to honest questions posted by new backers to be much more boring/annoying than the postings themselves. Everyone has to start somewhere, and some will simply not come across the DDA, the wiki or other available information without direction.

<nods> Yep, no need for it - besides, I like answering the easy questions (they're all I can answer).
Politely pointing someone towards the DDF archive is easy.

Good lads all, with sound and helpful judgement. Some proud fathers out there somewhere I'm sure. I know I would be.

If you were my boys, you'd all have earned seconds of cream custard pies for tea... :)

There is still hope... :)

I'm bored of pointless polls...

Yes, but how bored on a scale from 1 to 10?...

With hopefully new people joining daily it is inevitable that repeated questions will be asked, I'm sure I've done so myself.

Effectively telling them to **** and go read the DDF isn't the sort of thing I would ever wish to see on this forum personally, and for most new people would probably result in an immediate "Yeah well what is the DDF?" sort of response.

While I personally think the DDF archive has a wealth of fantastic knowledge, getting the time to read it instead of simply posting up a question is never going to happen for too many people. A lot will go and read it of course, once nudged in that direction, but a lot won't.

The easy answer to this is simply not to read those type of posts if they make you that annoyed, and certainly not to respond in an annoyed manner, and to leave others with a bit more patience to answer them instead.

this really depends on the question. a link to a definitive answer is always helpful though. like has been said new folk are arriving quickly now so nothing gained in being "BDSSE" towards them.

We should all just gracefully answer questions regardless of if the answer is in a post somewhere else. Afterall we are nice friendly people?

Yep. I think one of my first posts was a question, which turned out to have been tangentially discussed elsewhere and a helpful moderator pointed me to the right place.

I did search beforehand but that doesn't always work.

I think it's important to have a friendly and welcoming forum that invites participation. We're all newbies at some point.

If it's a repeat topic then a polite nudge in the right direction. If that doesn't work then just let the thread run it's course. Live and let live.

Patrick you answered my first question i think. i was instantly impressed with the forum here as i got good helpful answers.

The DDF stuff can be quite intimidating to jump into, especially for younger players, so i can understand it not always being thoroughly read first in all cases.

There is a tonne of hugely interesting stuff in it though, and people should be encouraged to look at it (maybe in a suitable pinned thread?).

Indeed, another good reason (if one was needed) for a bit of patience and help for new backers seeking information. The DDA is well worth reading, even if only the major guidelines that are in the OP of the stickies, but some of it twists my brain. The first time I read through grouping I was thoroughly confused.

I post on the DDF (Not archive) and I only suggest others to read them when they don't know what they are talking about in a set topic.
