Newcomer / Intro Having problem finding engineering mats

DPS is definitely too low. Not sure how much of that is my weapons (came with the ship) and how much is my lack of skill. I haven't really played a flying game since Star Wars Galaxies shut down, so I'm rusty.

I'm really enjoying exploration, but I know 2 of the engineers I need to open up require combat bonds, so I will need to figure it out eventually. So should I just go cannons once I get the engineer vs shields or a mix of pulse lasers and cannons?
The equipment supplied with new ships is all under powered.

A combination of lasers to deal with their shields and cannons or multi-cannons to deal with the ship. I would favour multi-cannons over cannons at first as they are easier to get hits with due to higher shot speeds and firing rate despite getting more damage when a cannon shell does hit.

............. Are missiles not very good in ED? I don't see many people recommend them.
........

In my mucking about in the starter area account I fit a seeker missile launcher if I do any of the pirate-kill missions. Reason being that there are limited weapons and modules in htere so destroying a fleeing pirate can be more problematic - so I send a missile to provide the coup de grâce.

I don't think they are very useful in the rest of the galaxy, not compared to what can be fitted in their place. Saying that, I have never gone for any of the powerpants goodies so maybe there is something available that way that is worthwhile.

There are 3 types of missiles I use seekers with a drag experimental which is very effective as my combat ships all have short range rails.
I also use pack hounds on some of my ships for the same reason and they look amazing!
Lastly dumbfire enzyme missiles which although hard to hit anything with...once you do their hull is shagged and u burn em real quick.
Torps are a favourite of accomplished pvpers intent on killing your shields.
Apart from that I use rails or beams.

I bought the chieftain and have it kitted out, but not much in the way of engineering yet. I tried a CZ and was able to hold my own, but still have problems finishing opponents, especially when fighting 2 or 3 at a time.

Reading a CZ article, it looks like normal missions may be a bit easier? I'm going to try a few of those and see if it goes any better.

Ships in CZs have military loadouts with a lot more shield and armour and they have higher combat ranks.

Fighting 2 or more NPCs is a lot harder because they work together. One teases you to attack it by flying more or less in front of you. If you attack the teaser it's wingman sneaks behind you and shoots you in your back. If you don't have a wingman yourself you need a ship with good shields and/or hull armour that can tank the damage done by the free opponent(s) until you have disposed of the teaser.

Ok the missions are a lot easier. I will hold off on cz's until I can get more engineering done. Targetting the power supply helps a ton, only had one of 8 make the jump out using that. thanks!

...1) is there any way to make a bookmark of the on planet locations? I tried bookmarking the Anacanda and Dav's hope, but no luck...

Once you've FSS scanned a system and/or been to Dav's Hope etc It will show up in the left hand Nav panel as you approach the planet on the next system visit. Just bookmark the planet and you're all set.
