Plasma accelerators are not very good for mining.

I nearly forgot something very important. Make sure to pick up the iron and nickel, so you can make limpets.
Boost into the rock until either you or the rock explode.
You probably won't need shields btw.
I use the beluga set up for all mining types but unarmed 512ish cargo space. Need to switch out the limpet controllers for one of the new univ ones size 3 i think and get another collector out there and make sure i have an A rated prospector on her (didn't realize the difference it makes on lazur mining fragments) when i get back from my current explo jaunt. Unfortunately don't have details handy atm.
Sit 16 -19KM from haz res centre the Armoured wing mate will have naffal to do...

You can def tag kills with mining gear just follow system security and jump in when the baddies are getting low on hull.You can, though. Abrasion blasters do some damage to ships, I once actually got a kill with that (with a little help of a weak system security ship).
do you stay at 16-19km or do you start there and keep moving in a straight line? does it affect number of fragments?
Also I got a lot of depleted rocks.
You still have to mine in a Pristine ring with haz res, mining in a Depleted ring with haz res status ring will get you bad rocks...
You circle the Haz res with in 16-19 KM... from a reference point..
Start at the facing the planet then go clock wise for 522 tons.. Next run face away from the planet circle clock wise around the haz res..
Next run go with ring rotation then circle haz res clock wise.. next run go anti ring rotation and go clock wise around the res...
You only need ~30 rocks till full from a single clock wise run...
Keep it between 16 and 20km. Basically you will mine in a circle around the haz-res center
There is a hard line and if the asteroid is farther than 20km from the center, you will lose the haz res bonus in fragments (which is significant)
Also, you can mine without weapons, but there is a chance pirates will stumble upon you. So be ready to comply with their requests and they will not bother you
You have about 10s to comply iirc - so right panel asap, abandon the required amount of goods (either in tons or in credits value)
It's way faster to comply than to fight them off or than to boost out to lose them
Pristine / Depleted is referring to the level of mineral reserves - Pristine - lots, Depleted - few.
This is affecting the number of fragments released when laser mining
So to maximize the number of fragments released you have to:
- use A-rated prospectors
- be in a Pristine System
- be in a Haz rez (and preferably in a hot spot for better yields, but this is not mandatory)
Macua 2 A-ring - is a metallic ring in a pristine reserves system - so good for platinum laser mining.
It would be better to keep some other valorous minerals you might find like Osmium - you can drop those to appease the pirates
Edit: to be clear, Depleted (about reserves) does not mean the Asteroid is Depleted (as in already mined), but to the level of reserves.
IF you'd mine in a System with Depleted Reserves, you'd get very little fragments when mining
