Haz Res Mining

That's nearly double the time to fill compared with haz RES!

Safety in the haz RES is not really an issue. You just need a fast ship (400+ m/s) to run away from the pirates. A Clipper would be a good unengineered ship, but at under 40 mil per trip and the disproportionate amount of time going backwards and forwards to the site to sell and restock, it seems hardly worth it unless you find a nearby carrier to sell the platinum, in which case you could make around 70 mil an hour ovedrall, maybe. That must be getting close to core mining, and is less than Robigo passenger missions or pirate massacre missions, so not really worth it. Unless you particularly like mining or aren't bothered by profit/progress, you need a fully-engineered ship to make it worthwhile.
You are not wrong on any of these points. I primarily do it to get cash while getting raws (mats) in bulk. I do massacre missions for credits for now. For me, it is the lowest mental focus credit earner.

It wasn't clear from the OP if they were or were not engineered.

If I may ask, are you doing pristine platinum haz res mining where a platinum hotspot overlaps the haz res instance, or just a random non-pristine metal haz res without a nearby hotspot?

Only do efficient pristine haz res ring mining...
Distance from solSystemPlanet, ring, Max percentage per rock distance drop, Green good = no drop / Red bad = massive drop avoid.

Did you try high RES? According to an old Reddit post, high RES yields the same number of fragments as haz RES, but you get help from the police there. In a Cutter with a point defence, you should be able to tank some pirates until the police sort them out, which would not only save the time of running away, but also, you don't lose your position.

That Post is wrong... Each res site type lowers bonus chunks from haz and lowers earning.

You don't have to worry about hotspots in a haz RES, which means that you don't need a DSS.

Its way too old the Hotspots and limits were reworked in the release of tritium and the nuking of ICE rings in 2020... Fdev Nuked the overlaps the same year and increased single hotspot generation the same year.
The hole reason you are doing platinum is because fdev reworked the single hot spot and made painite crap....

Its nots, it all changed in july 2020...
I did find this video
but this is a haz res sitting on a hotspot, and the player is using the mapping technique, knowing the specific locations of the high value asteroids.

I think I'll stick with the double overlap titanium hotspot at Omicron.

Another bit of interesting information - before july 2020 all hotspots seemed to be about the same.
After, it seems it was not the same anymore

Hotspots might not be equal - which suggests there is a degree of variance in mineral density per ring. Some rings are better some are worse.

Edit: click the link/pict - the tables are not displayed in the preview

Filled my cutter (516T) in 44 minutes today in the haz res. Very happy with that. Next run was complete rubbish and it just goes to show that luck with rocks is so very important.

So is it safer to mine in a high res rather than haz res? and in a high sec system?
It not safer... Youll still Trigger Ai pirates that come at you if you Still break the rules and trigger attacks...
What will happen is theres a Chance and RNG role of the dice that AI cops will in time Find the AI that attacks you and will defend you ...
Because the instance is all ready generated, the AI has a travel time from there present active location to your location...
The AI cop can and do choose to ignore the pirates attacking you as they are still the same AI thats there when people mine bounties and many AI dont help kill for pirate bounties in low normal and high which is the issue with the generation when your combat rank is high as youll get Anaconda pirates in the 0KM res sites pirates...
Going in the high is trading away ~20% of the rocks chuncks for the chance the AI will help defend you but if your combat rank is high the pirates are higher so the cops can take way longer as the pirate is high grade ship...

To be safer, you need complete rubbish combat rank, so the ships sent at you are rubbish due to the balance the game does for new players.....

what are the rules, just to be clear?
He’s probably referring to keeping away from the center of the RES where it is much more likely that pirates will scan you, so normally it’s better to target te RES then circle it while staying in the 15-20km band, possibly more depending on the fall-off in minerals by distance
