HCS Voice Pack + Scottish Accent

I should have known better...Yes, I should have.

I just bought VoiceAttack with the intent of using the HCS Voice Packs. Looking forward to it, seems really cool.

Nothing I say is recognised by the speech engine, no matter how much I train or fiddle. Every single word almost is misconstrued.

Seriously, does anybody with a West-of-Scotland accent have any luck soever with these programs? I thought this kind of thing was just a bit of a joke, but its real.

No-one has made a Scottish version yet ?

My mike isnt that great but still I thought it would at least be somewhat tolerable. This app is just not usable at all. Worst is it keeps bringing up programs I dont want to run.

IF I persevere and train it a bit more and fiddle with the mike a bit more, am I likely to get any luck, or is it a lost cause? Any Scottish CMDRs able to use these programs ? If I get a better mike/move it around is it likely to help ?

I have a Scottish accent - admittedly moderated by years at sea and living in exile in roast-beef-land. It does take a few runs through the windows speech recognition thingie to get good results but that's the thing - it is all down to the OS speech recognition software not something inherent in VA. I think you can change the tolerance / confidence level in VA but I have not mucked about with that.

There are still occasions when certain words get misidentified - differentiating between Leo and Cleo (HCS crew) for example can be a bit frustrating.

BTW - I was surprised that an "Island Lilt" (if I use it) is quite well recognised, maybe the rhythm of speech helps there.

Mic quality does make quite a difference..

(Voice recognition doesn't come in dutch so I have to use English.)

A couple of years ago, mere nanoseconds after seeing my order for voiceattack confirmed onscreen I had flashbacks to seeing this elevator clip and had images of me hollering at my VR headset "Deploy the funkin landin' gear ya' bassa!!!". I have yet to install VA, but suspect my experiences would echo your own. ;)

You can edit the voice commands to words or phrases that VA recognizes with your accent. The HCS voice packs usually have multiple commands for the same function. Try then out, then use the one that works best for that function.

Using voice commands, like in Star Trek, is appealing. I use voice commands because I fly in VR. But I’ve found voice recognition is not reliable enough for any command that absolutely, positively must be executed NOW! I use buttons for those functions. I use voice commands for secondary functions, like requesting docking and operating the landing gear.

Still remember trying to fly with a bad cold and Verity having no idea what I was saying. And that day they were testing the fire alarms at my condo. Wearing the headset muffled the fire bell to a comfortable level, but Verity couldn’t hear a thing I said over the noise.

That's because no one can understand a West-of-Scotland accent, even the locals. ;-)

West coast scot here and indigo is quite correct , friends ive played with for going on years now still struggle with my accent , more so when its a stressfull situation and it west coast scots slang added to the mix at high speed. Oddly enough a swedish friend doesnt have too much trouble with the accent.

I leave this here as a reminder to all west coasters ..... ELEVEN !!
