Hardware & Technical Head Tracker?

I had the same problem, though when I flicked between the two tabs in control panel where you see the response to each joystick movement, it seems to free it up (difficult to describe better as in Afghanistan right now so not near my computer). However I noticed in the War Thunder control menu where you assign axes (rather than single movements) to axis movements of joysticks/virtual joysticks, it only recognised the axis movement and so disregarded this pov hat issue. Not sure what computer trickery is involved in this, however.

AFGHANISTAN!!! My colleague wouldn't go to Swindon said it's outside the M25. That puts it into perspective.

As a small sidetrack, let me tell you of something quite humourous that happened to me the first time I used TrackIR. Well, at least in hindsight it's funny now, but it wasn't funny then.

Of course I was very happy when I first got it and quickly used it in my flight sims - Falcon 4, Jane's F15 etc.

After a couple of days, I realised I had a stiff neck. Why?

Because I never configured the TrackIR properly. The "deadzones" were too small and I regularly found the screen shifting due to my head movements. Hence I had to keep PERFECTLY STILL if I want to look ahead :D

Also it wasn't till I used the TrackIR that I realised I had a lot of unconscious head movements while playing games. Eg, I would try to "duck" in real life if I'm being shot at - I didn't know till TrackIR showed the screen shifting due to my head movements :)

So I tried this last night and unfortunately it resulted in something hijacking the POV Hat switch UP on my Saitek X52 joysticks meaning I couldn't rebind that input and the game, seeing POV Hat Up as a way to navigate the interface, constantly going up on any menus! Basically the virtual joystick FaceTrackNoIR creates which I can then bind to the head look controls is also reporting something else that the game thinks is pressing up on any menus.

The only way to fix it is to unbind that control but then that means you have an input you can never use for anything as it won't rebind. This probably has something to do with the fact the game doesn't distinguish between multiple joysticks present at the same time where as it can distinguish between an xbox 360 pad and joystick.

Hi Mike,

FaceTrackNoIR supports a couple of game protocols VJOY being one of them. FreeTrack is the 'default' game protocol for FaceTrackNoIR. FreeTrack is used by a number of games to allow FaceTrackNoIR to use work with it. FreeTrack can also work with TrackIR games that use non-encrypted version of the TrackIR head tracking interface. The encrypted version was added later to stop this situation by NaturalPoint (TrackIR manufacturer). Could you please let us know if you plan on supporting the FreeTrack protocol for head tracking.

Happy New Year

Bumping it up to see if anyone has heard anything from FD regarding FreeTrack support?

Yes I tried this also I ahd the same issue, I found it to be a bug with the vjoy, the hat of the vjoy is always up and while I can get it to work in euro truck simulator, on ED all I get is scrolling menu going up, I re-installed facetracknoir without vjoy and while it works in other games I still cant get it to work in ED

One developer trying out the Oculus Rift says "that he can now use the device for 15 minutes without feeling any nausea". (He has been following the manufacturer's recommend that, at first, you use the headset for short periods to build up your "resistance" to motion sickness.)

That's the way you do it in real life too, if you're an aerobatic pilot. Personally, I seem to have a very strong resistance to motion sickness, as I haven't felt the tiniest twinge even when flying aerobatics for an hour - I just get tired. That probably means that my sense of balance is crap, but I don't mind :).

OnT: I don't see any reason why Elite Dangerous wouldn't support TrackIR. It already has a detailed 3D cockpit, all they have to do is add the proper routines for it, and I believe the TrackIR guys are very helpful as they want as many games as possible to suppor it. I haven't tried Oculus yet, but I have used TrackIR for innumerably flight sims and other games, and once you try it you can never go back to a hat switch. Plus it helps me not develop bad habits in my real flying - when I first started flight lessons, having played flight sims since I was a wee babe, I basically just looked straight ahead at the instrument panel - not a good idea in a real aircraft, where you need to be constantly scanning. :)
