Head tracker

Playing without head tracking (FreeTrack-based DIY, works like a charm) is like playing half of the game to me. Definitely recommended if TrackIR is out of options due to costs!

you go forward, to vr. 🤡

I for one (and there are lots who feel the same) couldn't live with VR at all*. Yes the sense of "presence" is amazing - but the negatives totally spoiled it for me. Maybe when all the resolution, screen-door and narrow focal radius issues are sorted I will give it another go but it will have to be with something that isn't a box strapped to your face. ;)

VR is great if you can live with it and I don't decry anyone that prefers it.

(* I was pleased to be able to sell-on my Rift for what I paid for it.)

Hey folks, I want to get a head tracker and was looking at the head tracker pro wireless but see the company went bust, have they been replaced with an alternative?

Cheers

Tobii make a head tracker (v5) but it only works with up to 27in monitors.
Which is a pity or I'd buy one!

Just a minor point, we didn't go bust. We chose to wind it down. Lots of reasons why, one of them being Brexit and the impact on certification. We originally spent a big chunk of money getting both wired and wireless products tested and certified (CE and FCC) and we would have had to spend another chunk to get the new UKCA certification simply to continue to sell in the UK. There used to be a fund for UK tech startups to help with the costs of certification but the current government shut that down.

Ad Astra!

Hi Rob, sorry for the misinformation I was going by tidbits I saw online. It's a shame you had to wind down as from what I was seeing your product looked great, hopefully ye will get a better government in next time round. We are in a similar boat here in Ireland with a bunch gouls in office that nobody wanted.

For anyone interested, here is a very short vid of the app ( TrackAR ) I'm using for head tracking (very poor quality as I had to record on my son's phone)

In the video you see my phone peeking over the back of my comp, it's connected via wifi to opentrack.

I definitely recommend this app to anyone who hasn't tried head tracking before and wants to give it a go before going off and spending on the likes of the suggestions in this thread

Track IR. I recommend it to anyone who asks. Been using it since what must be the mid-oughts. Falcon 4, Il-2, racing sims like F1 2020, Elite, ArmA and dozens of other games I play all work great with Track IR. I haven't used any other solution so I have no idea if there is a better one. But the fact I haven't used another shows that Track IR does everything I need and has for a long time.

Every now and then I fire up Elite having forgotten to start the TIR software and when I get in the pit with a fixed view it's like I'm back in 1999 or something. Essential equipment for me, Track IR.

I'll join the TrackIR choir.

When first eyeing for headtrackers I thought it was a bit on the expensive side, so I went with NoTrackIR. But I never got it to work properly. The tracking was finicky at best. After several frustrating days/nights I called it quits and ordered TrackIR. Haven't regretted for a second. Totally worth it.

Being the Chaotic Neutral that I am, I use VR and love it, as well as using EDTracker and loving it the same. It's just nice to have a choice of which kind and level of immersion I want when I play at any given time. (especially having to live with chronic migraines that make VR a no-no quite often 😅 ).
Never tried TrackIR due to it's rather hefty price tag for my habits (yes I know, "you own VR though", but bear with me 😆), but even with its minor drifting issues and a battery to charge from time to time, I've never been let down by the sheer practicality of the tiny EDTracker. Absolutely great bang for bucks.

A real shame to hear. Still rocking my Pro Wireless after several years, it's still a tiny great piece of kit. Absolutely fundamental for the latest Flight Simulator, even moreso than for Elite. You did some great job, a shame to see that unravelled by silly politics (amongst whatever other factors).

There are also things like Trackhat. That is an alternative to TrackIR. So you either have the cap or clip, and you use a modified web-cam, and then OpenTrack software. These are also compatible with TrackIR sensors, so if you have access one of those, but your clip is broken, you can one these as replacement.

This is a middle ground from the DIY solutions, and a complete package like from TrackIR

Yep, I've had Trackhat for a couple of years, really good.

I for one

there is always that guy ...

ok, there are always those guys ... 😂

fair enough. those issues keep improving but are still there, specially the form factor. i totally get that. it is true that those issues are a limiting factor on the time i spend in elite because, yeah, it's really diving into a box. for me that's not that bad, 2-3 hour sessions are more than enough, specially considering that i probably wouldn't be playing elite at all if it weren't for that little box on my face.

As a proud owner of an original wired and wireless pro I'm really, really sorry to hear that Rob.

All the best
