Heading out for a bit of a stroll...

Well; this should be interesting. :)

I'm kinda bored with the Bubble right now. I thought I'd load up my Explorer DBX Big Bad Nasty Warship and point her stubby little nose for the Galactic Rim. Stores are loaded, SRV's aboard (this time) and first leg will take me 367 Jumps into uncharted space. Second leg as close to the Rim as possible; then leap-frog my way around the edge.

Personally, I believe that while we have Bugs and Guardians, there has to be someone else out there...somewhere. I'll go look. :)

Cheerio, mates!

I am - and nearly half-way around the outside.

YES!!!

That's my Elite ranking right there LOL. I think this is #4 for me; it's a good omen to find it so early in the journey. Still, it's exciting to find an ELW.

Devs WHEN can we land on atmospheric planets?!
:D

I'm about 14kLY s out at the moment. I haven't seen anything different to the bubble - only no other ships and no USSs, so not very interesting really. Last time, I went out to Bovomit and looked over the fence to see if there were any thargoids planning an attack, but I didn't see anything, so I went back again. I'm still wondering what all this exploring is all about. Has anybody ever found anything?

Yes - Thargoids, Guardians, Colonia, etc. Plant-based life on far-distant worlds; new worlds to colonize. There may be more civilizations out there as well; we've no idea. At this point the galaxy is...I'm not sure but about half a per cent explored, and we've found all this. Imagine what we find when it's 2% explored. :)

The area I'm in I haven't come across a discovered system in ages (I'm not too far away from Colonia either) so every system I find something new :p

In all seriousness, I think you have to find something that interests you. If all you see is "oh hey, another icy body, I'll add that to the other 3000" or "that Gas Giant is a slightly different shade of blue...yay" then no, exploring is not interesting and you can see everything in the bubble.

I look for oddities. I like finding those oblate Gas Giants that are spinning super fast or those GG's orbiting super close to their star (bonus points for both). I Found a GG the other day that had some amazing deep red coloring in a wide central dark brown band and it had contrasting beige bands that made the color stand out even more. I'm sure that exists elsewhere but it was new to me!

I'm also exploring a region that seems to be filled with Helium-rich GG's which are fairly rare. I'm learning what to look for to determine which systems are more likely to have these beauties. They aren't really worth anything as far as credits or Arx are concerned. I haven't found a single ELW in the roughly 300 systems I have visited in this region but that's not why I'm doing it. I found something I like and I'm going with it. I said it in another thread and I'll say it again, maybe, just maybe I'll find one of those Helium GG's. The chance if that is pretty much 0 but still, you never know.

I also tend to play out weird personal narratives as I explore; usually when I find ELW's or some other planets with potential lifeforms. That definitely comes from the nerd inside me that loves RPG's. If there is life down there, have they noticed me? If they have, what are they thinking? Are they scrambling to try and communicate with me? hide from me? launch weapons against me? Maybe those mapping probes I just launched at them are being considered a hostile action (lets face it, those things probably cause a lot of devastation). If it's an ELW in a system with a strange object like a black hole or neutron star, how would that have changed our understanding of the universe if we had evolved there? is it even possible for something like that to exist? It keeps the mind active because exploring can feel monotonous at times.

The allure of exploration in this game is an odd one. on the surface, no, there really isn't anything ground breaking to discover. I have a feeling the devs keep 95% of the gameplay to the bubble for a reason; that is where 95% of players are going to spend 95% of their time. I highly doubt there's an unknow alien species planted somewhere that we can find. The chance of finding something like that is almost 0. But if you don't go looking for it then the chance is 0.

Please note, the numbers masquerading as statistics in this post were entirely made up.

ANOTHER ONE! 😁

This is ELW #2 on this expedition, #5 (I think) total for me! This one's RIGHT on the Galactic Rim; my toes are practically hanging over the edge LOL.
If I had the choice, I'd call it Medea.
I think Harlan would have approved. :)

Cheers, friends!
You should name them for yourself Cmdr, write it down, print the screenshot and put all your discoveries, thoughts and views together, it will/would make for interesting reading in a physical book....

I'm such a nerd....

That's what I intend to do on my trip into the black, even though they may have already been mapped/discovered, in my Cmdrs tale, I'm there first lol
Anyway, safe journey's Cmdr!

I have a personal goal to go to the furthest possible locations out at the rim on my travels. I've always enjoyed exploration in all of my games and I like to find the edge of maps, the furthest possible point before you hit that wall. I some times try to do it using galmap just for the inspiration and I'm never quite sure if I've actually reached the furthest band of stars on the map or if its just not rendering them. Trying to reach the highest star according to edsm blips the star and then it fades out instantly. I can't even book mark it. I am convinced there is a path to it, I've just got to climb that spiral in just the right way to get there. For me the goal is two fold in that I want to reach it and be able to return.

My last trip out I went a pretty decent distance and found a path of neutron stars that hadn't been discovered which got me excited about the possibility of making the trip further out past the edge. While I was out I got really interested in that background noise the planets make when you scan them, I noticed they say "speak to me", there is more and I felt inspired by it to try to isolate that more and find out what or where it is trying to tell me to go. I still haven't figured out how to speak to a planet yet, but when the cosmos calls to you you have to answer.

Truth be told, I find exploration reports to be more exciting than exploring myself. Been to Sagittarius, been to Colonia, made several smaller trips around the bubble. After some initial adrenaline rush it qwuickly become either tedious (jump, honk, scoop, scan) or tiresome (endless SC to the interesting place to make nice picture, get excited for 3 minutes and then spent another 4 hours jumping).

Exploration reports have that drama, excitement, all tedium distilled out, leaving just the best core. I personally find exploration interesting, but not being able to land on every (well, major most, since gas giants - which alone woould be very interesting and exciting - deep dive...) discovery, repetitive generation (every ELW looks the same) robs lot from it.

Sometimes I wish ED stopped being so "simulation" and add bit of eye candy like Homeworld or even EVE. I haven't played for a while now but I start to feel the void itch - keeping it away telling myself I haven't picked ship for my next journey.

I spent an hour last night, jumping from colonia to my first checkpoint back to the bubble, i nodded off whilst leap frogging, woke up to the sounds of my ships alarms sounding for getting to close to the star, took major damage! Good job i took repair limpets and afmu! Glad i choose armoured Power plant too

I don't explore for the screen shots... I explore because...

Ok, you're not gonna like it, but....

I explore because every major patch that I can recall has introduced major bugs that really only impact those in the bubble, trying to do their daily whatever. I've made a habit of leaving "civilized" space either on patch-release day, or just before patch release day (depends on if said patch includes new ships), and when I get back from my exploration, all the bugs are worked out, and everything has gone back to whatever passes for normal around here.

I get to play and not have to deal with the aftermath of patching, and when I get back, everything is as it was, only newer and working correctly, or as close to correctly as anything ever works.
