Heading to Sagitarius A* - What should I fit?

By the way, i have a fine dropbox folder filled with hanz zimmer scores, epic tracks, and stuff like that. Pm me.

Ok, just made a quick test with that Adder setup (or something close to it. I'm still usind the intermediate discovery scanner and the FSD is 3B.

Head into a straight line up, from Bhotos system, then got back. About 5 hours playing - Got 450k for selling the data. Is that the proper average revenue from exploring? Will the Advanced scanner have a big impact on this aspect? I`ve tried to detail scanner everything that didn't looked like a rock planet or asteroid (Nutter's tip).

The white snowballs are not worth much. Unfortunately, I've found highly valuable high metal worlds masquerading as snowballs (ice planets and rocky ice planets). The visual difference, if there is any, is extremely subtle. You have to make a judgement call on whether to scan the white ball and hope for a 5KCr+ metal world, while being willing to accept the 600-700Cr iceball.

gravel piles (asteroid belts) are worthless clutter on the contact screen and annoying gravity wells in supercruise.

The difference provided by the Advanced scanner is that you will find ALL objects in the system, even those that are over 500K Ls away. Not just those within 1K Ls of your ship when you ping with it.

400K Cr isn't bad for a few hours. I turned in couple hundred systems and netted about 11 million. This was on a 8K LY round trip that took several days as I wasn't in any hurry until I decided to come back.

Well my first expedition I made 2.8 mil in three days ; went to the musca dark region then X2 Centauri to see my first black hole. Most of the space is explored ; I ran into my first earth-like planet outside of inhabited space (was already explored though), was first to find a couple of gas giants with ammonia based life, and mapped out some virgin systems as well. In my view, fully mapping systems is a bit of a waste of time, yet sometimes it is fun to do and I did exactly that - just to put my name on things. Be sure to scan down things which look like waterworlds, earthlikes and terraformable metal worlds - you get a pretty penny for those. Just set a goal for these mini-expeditions and they are rather fun to do; with a good fuel scoop (take the biggest class your ship can fit) you can refill very quickly. I recommend to just do long range jumps to get out of previously explored space. It doesn't take much.

I am now on my second one, this time with an Adder (sold my Cobra), this time I've set out a goal of finding a previously unexplored Earthlike. Mapped out a number of virgin systems, found some previously unexplored waterworlds and terraformable planets, but no dice on the earthlike yet. Still on the second day, though. Will probably manage it in a few days.

Edit: decided to cut my second run a bit short; returned home after three days, 4 mil profit - found my first previously unclaimed ammonia world, and a number of terraformables and such. Going to go for the Clipper now - shouldn't take too long.

My goal is to get a Clipper for exploration to do it in ultimate imperial style, then I will go visit the core.

Spazduck, please share your final setup here. It'll be cool to follow a fellow new explorer on it's first steps.

I actually ended up taking Undecided's advice and kitted out a Type-6. It has about a 30 LY jump range, and I like the panoramic view. Thus far it seems like it's worth the more substantial investment.

Finally get my ASP kitted out for exploration : http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60g,0Wg0Wg0Wg,2-4s8S7_6u6u8S8I,52W7Re0Ke0Ke0Ke2UI2jw
I've taken heat sink and maintenance unit just in case, for such a long trip I've got no idea what I might encounter ^^

Time to set sail for a long long road, and it might be really long because I want to do it with economical route.
But I will probably get back to fastest route after some time, almost 200 jumps for doing 1000LY is going to be painfull.
But you only need to fuel scoop at destination (1000LY with a full tank :D) and I will get by more systems and more chance to find something interesting maybe.

So now, need to buy food, drinks, put some music and... godspeed

Hope I will make it to Sagittarius, and get back alive after that.

Edit : typo

I agree with all recommendations for a good music playlist to accompany you. Especially if you're anything like me, you'll need something to stave off the urge to do this every time you zoom right out on your galactic map...

Ahhh, space madness.

The trip to the center of the galaxy (and beyond) was one of the main reasons I bought this game. Sounds like a very interesting way to expend time on it.

I have a Cobra MK III, a decent mining gear (can sell it) and 200k CR. What should I fit (aside from a good Fuel Scoop)?

Please advise.

I'd advise you to sell the Cobra and buy an Adder. Full kitout for exploration is around 3.5M, but you'll get better jump range. Otherwise it's straightforward:

You can bin the Shield Generator if you're brave, but on my first jump through a populated anarchy I was interdicted immediately by an Asp who mass locked me and had me down to the last ghost of shields. Note that your boost speed with the tiny Thrusters is still nearly 300, but your normal speed is about 130!!
The 3A fuel scoop fills the tank from empty in about a minute at 100-130kg/s which only brings the heat up to 60%. Jump range on one tank using medium sized jumps is about 280Ly! All long jumps is 125Ly. I made it back from my first 3 day short trek with 1.3M in exploration credits, a load of "first discovered" including one Terrestrial, 98% Hull, Ship Integrity of 91% and most of my AFMU intact. Exploration is awesome!

the most important things you need to carry with you is fun, and patience. Just pick the ship you like the most, slap good scoop, FSD, scanners and get going. Having those, nothing else should really worry you. ;-)

OP, taking everything else into account this post is the most relevant in my opinion. Just get the bits together and get going. Maybe what you could do is consider what you want to do while you are out there.

My aim was always to go to Sagittarius A* but not via the most direct route, I am flying along the Orion Arm and taking in some sights along the way... such as the Dumbbell Nebula and the Veil Nebula's.

What will you do when you enter systems? Will you scan each and every astrological body if undiscovered or will you cherry pick the most interesting or just scan the stars? I initially had the opinion that I would scan everything that was undiscovered but then changed my policy to scan all undiscovered only minus the asteroid belts as they are not worth anything on return.

As for entertainment, this is very important. Clearly I am going to pimp Lave Radio that has on demand episodes as well as live streaming but you might want to generate your own content, and indeed why not?

I'm blogging my Galactic Journey and role playing my commander in audio logs.... currently I am fearing a decent into madness... maybe you'd want to do something similar (excluding the madness). If you catch me online feel free to chat - that goes for anyone. CMDR Max Torps out.

The factor you're missing is the ship's overall ability to dissipate heat build-up. The T-6 is godawful in this regard, and the Cobra is incredible.

Is it actually confirmed that different ships fitted with same components dissipate heat differently? Is there a ship-specific heat-dissipation stat documented anywhere? How do you know this?

TriumphANT, that's the course of Action I took! No regrets. Adder is being a very cheap and cool startup gear for exploring. I'm increasing my exploration radius gradually - Started with a 300ly trip, then a 450ly one. Scanning pretty much everything except asteroids.

Max Torps, what an amazing take on enjoying the game! I wouldn't go as far as role playing for now, but I certainly get easily immersed on the game. I actually keep constantly forgetting I'm playing. There is that eventual moment where I find myself dealing with the maps and panels as if it was all right here, around me. Fun factor is the actual fuel that lead me to exploration!

Music wise, I have a epic folder for epic moments, but I usually play Elite "musicless". I like to feel the cold, indifferent darkness of space. Somehow, I'm attracted to that feeling.

The cobra wouldn't be my choice to go on an exploration trip, but if i had to go, that's how i'd kit it out :

Exploration Cobra

No weapons, they're useless and will reduce your jump range, of which you don't have that much to start with in a cobra(compared to an Asp).

When in trouble, run ^.^ That's also why i'd keep at least some sort of shield, sometimes you have to get away from a mass lock on your return trip, when you get near civilization, and nothing's more frustrating than loosing all your exploration data a couple of jumps from your destination.

The heat sink module comes in handy when you're not careful and get pulled out of SC near a star. I'd use two but that would cut deeper in your jump range

Get the best fuel scoop you can fit, you're going to spend a lot of time fuel scooping, like... A lot! The less you have to do that, the better, believe me....

Auto field-maintenance units are a must have, and you need two because you cannot repair one with itself.

As for tips : as soon as the jump countdown starts, set your throttle to zero, this will avoid you almost any trouble you can encounter.

Scoopable star types: KGB FOAM

Have fun commander ^.^

junaum here's a small selection of some photo's I've taken while travelling. I'm currently south of Sagittarius A heading to the most southern point in the galaxy, just because. :) I won't provide any more advice as I'm sure you have received enough now. ;)

The choice of ship is yours.
The choice of course and destination is yours.
The sights that you will encounter, the memories that you will have, these are all yours.
The galaxy awaits discovery, will you join us as we go where no one has gone before?

See you in the blackness of space, at the edge of reason, eyes wide admiring the stunning vista's that only you will see.

Amazing shots Gopher. Really motivating. Speacilly that dual Jovians planets being so close - such a improbable scene!

I particularly feel that this game made me a bit "Nerdier" than I was. I've being contemplating it's landscapes as it was the real thing.

I've done some 1k ky incursions and loved every bit. I've saw a Black Hole, scary little subtle black thing. Now I've got into some trade farming. Reallyt enjoyed exploring on the Adder, but I digged ASP´s cockpit so much, damn.

Thalios, thanks very much for the additional tips. I've became patient when it comes to sail off now. I believe the preparation will pay off later. Thanks again.

As a potential explorer myself this has been an interesting thread, I think I will continue to 'Mine' the RES sites (one Cobra at a time) to build up for a Asp. One question, in all the exploring has anyone come across lost cargo / interesting items / 'ET's lost luggage' and kicked themselves for not having some cargo space?

If not, a thought for the future Frontier? easy to implement ?
