Newcomer / Intro Hello everyone, I just started 5 days ago

If you like exploration, you'll love this:

Otherwise, the key to finding virgin systems is to not go where everyone else went before. That includes to not use ships with long jump ranges :p.
Ok, you could also use a ship with long jump range and go further out - it's all the same in the end.
As exploration ships go, the Python is, by now, third rate. Top tier are the Anaconda (if you insist on maximum jump range), the Kraits (if you want to bring everything plus the kitchen sink) and the Dolphin (if you can manage to stay the right side up over a planet).

If you play on PC, there's a few of tools you might want to use as an explorer:
EDDiscovery creates an automatic (filterable) log of where you've been and what you've done (that's where it started off - nowadays it'll do anything except make coffee, and my guess is that if your coffee machine has an API, the EDD devs will also put that in...).
EDD is also one of the tools that feeds data into EDDN and EDSM. The former is mostly useful in the Bubble, as it handles (and, whenever a CMDR running one of the tools visits a system, updates) trade and other station data. Of course, that also means that maybe 2 minutes after you've found a profitable trade route, everyone else knows about it, too. Unless you disable the data upload. The most used front end for EDDN is EDDB.
The second big exploration tool is EDSM - the stellar database/galactic map built by the players. In addition to the stars, there are also travel routes (e.g. to cross thin areas of the Galaxy) and other POIs on that map - from crystalline shard locations to the carriers of the DSSA, the Deep Space Support Array.

Oh, and if on your first travels you look into the sky and ask yourself "what the gentle caress is that" - the answer is NGC 7822. It's always NGC 7822.

Thanks, will remember that. One question though, there are thousands/millions of stars for every ganker near the center isnt it? How do they find their prey (me)?

By going to/waiting at places where there's a lot of player traffic. Notorious are Deciat (Felicity Farseer), Shinrarata Dezhra (Elite access only, everything reduced by 20%), San Tu (the unofficial official PvP hub), every CG (Community Goal) location, especially if it's a combat CG like the one active now, the top mining and selling locations as listed by Miner's Tool, other central systems like Colonia itself.

edit:
If you stay out of these hotspots, you're pretty safe. The number of CMDRs I've seen in the last weeks (in Open, in the bubble) was low.

Hey, Python is great for exploration.
Engineered, that is.
This is my long range explo Python.
With all bells and whistles.
Could make some improvements , as l am now more experienced (?!) since I made that build. It's sitting in garage for months now, but if I go in deep black, that's what I will fly

Edit: now that I look my build, I think I had smaller power plant on it, probably took it to some other ship, but rest is ok

Well, since you chose to throw the gauntlet ;)...

Can't see where you're going, only one SRV and zero research equipment and still need a couple of football fields to land anywhere.

Not what I'm currently out with, but that's an exploration Dolphin I usually suggest:

If I were to redesign it, I might sacrifice some range for a cooler PP in case I'm in a hurry. The Dolphin can now safely scoop while charging the FSD.

For a large (i.e. medium) ship, I'd tend towards a Krait Mk. II. Sacrifice a bit of jump range (anything over ~50 ly is overrated) and bring along a fighter bay for screenshots and planetary fun.

That was my first long range build. Did 5k ly to unlock engineers in dbx, with that Python i did 60k ly round trip(bubble - Colonia - Sag - bubble) .
Now I would probably take 2 srv cause I would fool around and change some other stuff.
Point was Python is very much capable exploration ship. Not the best, but I like it.

Looks good on screenshoots in blue galvanized skin(forgot the name of skin).

LOL, not at all. For a start, no SRVs, no guardian ruins, no nothing like that. Also, Cobra Mk3 on day 2? LOL. Asp Explorer on day 3?? Haha... you're yanking my chain. Python on day 4????? Try 3 months at least, that was if you focused on credits (or find an exploit... which had some people flying Anacondas the same month as the game was released).

........ So explore beyond the bubble in solo. Top tip.
.....

Sorry, but that is not very sensible. I assume that what @Dragsham meant to say was when you arrive at certain specific places outside the bubble (SagA*, Beagle. etc) beware of murder-hobos lurking for lulz by destroying exploration-builds. So switch to Solo for those if you wish. (I have not seen any of the remote locales on INARA's Security Report in like forever - since DW2 probably.)

The truth is you can explore in Open play with virtually no risk away from the popular destinations until you head to somewhere to cash-in your data. I always swap to a PG on approaching the system I have decided to sell data at (to gain rep etc) as those locales are known to and frequented by murderers.

There is really only one difference to exploring out in the black in Open Play ('cos you are not likely to see anyone - let's face it you don't often see anyone even in the bubble) - communication with friends and letting them come aboard for the views in multiplayer.

Hiya All, I always loved space trader/combat (I hate mining, finding alien artifacts/grinding) OPEN-WORLD games and just started 5 days ago.

Quick recap:

Day 1: Fly in starter system, getting used to controls. Read some of the guides there. Try to earn credits by doing courier missions for a nicer ship. Sidewinder looks ugly IMHO. Tried a bounty mission, flew around the target system for 1 hour looking for the target, he found me instead by interdiction in the end.

Day 2: OK, got the hang of spamming some courier missions to get credits. Saved up a million from missions. Bought a Cobra MkIII. Left the starter system. Figured that in my crappy unmodded loan Sidewinder, since I could take out targets easily, my shiny new Cobra MkIII with the biggest guns I could mount should be able to do a simple massacre mission. Lets try this, on a Low conflict zone....... I SEE! They are called Massacre missions because newbie noobs in their lame 1m credit ships get MASSACRED. OK, back to grinding boom time courier missions while exploring the galaxy. OK, I am enjoying the trading commodities and mission part of this game.

Day 3: How to make 10 mil for my next ship? Hmm., Whats this, youtube video says there is good money in mining Painite? Ok, sell all the guns and combat crap from my Cobra, buy mining equipment after reading guides. Traveled many jumps to some system where they have Painite. 6 hours of screwing up, flying into asteroids and random waypoints later, got my 1st load of Painite. Not bad! over 5 million. 1 more run and I can get a bigger cargo hold. 2nd run took 2 hours. Another 6-7 million. Upgraded to Asp Explorer.

Day 4: Getting the hang of it, Asp Explorer is getting me 50 million to 70 million per mining expedition. But this is boring crap! I came here to play space trader/combat! Once I hit 200m, I got myself a nice Python outfitted for Combat/Exploration/Trading. Nice! Damn, the galaxy is big. I need more jump range! Internet says FSD booster is a MUST...... Back to my stored Asp Explorer and outfitted it for the long 1000 LY journey to this HP 6xxxxx system. I dont mind the long journey, I bought this game because it promised a BIG galaxy. Its fun stopping by some systems for a closer look at the stuff and planets and scooping fuel.

Day 5: GAWDAMMIT! I BOUGHT THIS GAME FOR SPACE TRADER/COMBAT!!! what AM I DOING DRIVING AN SRV IN THE DARK BUMPING INTO THINGS, GETTING STUCK AND TRYING TO FIND THOSE THRICE DAMNED PYLONS?!??! DAMN SRV IS SO BUMPY I GET MOTION SICKNESS!!!!

Is this kinda similar to how some of you started?
Well minus , the safe starter area that hadn't arrived, doing missions which I still seldom do, mining which I didn't try for many months and landing on planets and driving the SRV as I didn't get Horizons for months as well.

If not similar it is a lot faster.

Keep having fun.

I think I got paranoia from the massive butt-kicking I received in the low intensity CZ. Am thinking the Python wont hack it for combat without Guardian/Engineering. I like to play open world and have paranoia of dying from the first bump.
CZs are pretty extreme and generally require an exclusively combat focussed build, the Python is a fairly large target and not a pure combat ship, they are tough but not necessarily the best for that role.

BTW, I do want to be the first to map at least one system. But since I am starting so many years after the game began, which way should i try? Any tips? Everywhere I have gone so far has been discovered previously (no surprise).
Don't head towards any famous places or other noticeable features and you could well be finding unexplored systems within 500-1000 light years. You don't need to be first to discover to earn money from a system.
Take a Detailed Surface Scanner to map stuff to maximise earnings as exploration rank is from credits earned exploring.

OP, you have NO idea how huge the grin on my face is reading your account. Welcome to the Galaxy, and you are JUST the person Elite Dangerous caters to!
You try new things, you have humour, you are philosophical when you try something and get whacked - oh yeah, you are going to do WELL here!

Remember: "If you ain't dying, you ain't TRYING." :ROFLMAO:

Eventually you will figure out your own set of rules and they may NOT be the rules you came in with. Whatever path you choose is YOUR path and therefore the RIGHT way to play. Have fun, love it and NEVER stop exploring.
See you in the black, Commander.
o7!
