HELP - Can not find friends / wings in game.

I spent like 2hrs last night trying to meet up with two of my friends (steam) in OPEN play.

I spotted the green icon in the Universe map. We met up same system, same orbit, same docking station.

YET --------------------- we could not see one another.

We were talking through comms, we tried everything but could not see one another.

*PLEASE* can any one step in and explain how / why / and when ????

Thank you.

That's an instancing problem, happens a lot.

Did you all have wing beacon turned on? It's in Functions panel.

It's a good idea to set up hotkeys for selecting other wingmen. Typically F1, F2 and F3. Then set F4 to target wingman's target.

Enter supercruise, select the wingman you want and drop on his beacon. You should end up in the same instance. When all traveling to a new system the best way to stay in the same instance is to slave your ship to the wing leader, it's in the wing settings. Or you could scan the wing leader's high wake. If you manually jump to a new system you may, or may not, arrive in the same instance.

How far do you live from each other?

If you have bad ping(long distance connection) to your friends, you may never be able to play with them.

The Multiplayer in ED is pretty bad sometimes. You can't "force" you or your friends into the same instance, the game decides what instance you go into. Private Group and being in a Wing *should* force you to be in the same instance, but it doesn't. Maybe one day FD will fix that, but as of now that's how it is.

Lol i hope this is a joke/just plain incorrect.

The entire point of "Wings" is to force the players into the same Instance, if what you say is true they may as well remove the entire system. Infact that should have been fixed (if its a true bug) before work on Horizons even started.

I think whilst there may be some bugs to fix, it is incorrect.

I'm in the UK and I've been in wings involving people from the United States, Australia, and a whole host of other countries. Locality I do not believe is a factor when in wings (e.g. The fact you're in a Wing takes precedence over any other factory, e.g. ping).

I would agree it should, but plenty of evidence seems to suggest it does not work out that way quite often

It's entirely correct. I've spent hours trying to meet up with people before. Some people that don't live really far away(<200 ping probably) I have no trouble meeting up with. People far away like the other side of the world, nope.

Wings do not force you into the same instance as you just stated.

Actually, this is partly true.
I was in a wing with 2 other outfit mates and 1 has the occasional 'lag'. The other 2 of us notice the lag happen in game and all of a sudden, it drops everyone out of the wing and we loose visual on the person who is lagging. A couple of minutes later, we see him back inside the game and we can re-form the wing again.

Try inviting friends into wing first.
You can do this no matter what system/instance you are in as long as you are all in Open play.
If you are in supercruise in same system, have one person drop down and switch on wing beacon. (other people here have suggested this already)
Then everyone must lock onto your wake. you can also use the option in the Wing menu.
This should drag you all into the same instance.
Usually this is enough to ensure that you mostly will stay together.
It's a bit of an embarrassment when you drop in on a Clipper with a sidewinder and your wing mates have not followed you in oops!
Bit like standing down a big chap on a Saturday night thinking your friends are behind to back you up only to find they have cleared off into the nearest pub while you weren't looking

Make sure that you have both done at least 1 hyperspace jump in the current open play session.

People spawn into their own instances to prevent two people spawning on the same pad and exploding so you have to jump first to properly join open.

Beyond this if your friend is a brand new player they have to jump out of the starter system before being able to meet other players. It's a rudimentary anti grief system...

I am used to form wings with people from Australia and the U.K - I am in the U.S. - and it normally works fine...

This weekend though, its been HELL!!! its crazy!!!! we are not meeting up no matter what!!? I see them in SC but we dont drop into same instance!! and that's when I get lucky enough to see them in SC!!

Two of them are in teh U.K... cant see each other either!!

I get it.. tomorrows lunch.. but this is ridiculous.

Wing instancing has stopped working pretty much altogether this w/e. Very little trouble with wings over the last month but of late it's all gone pear-shaped.

A common misconception. I've often logged in and found plenty other players already docked at the same starport.

It's not a joke, and it's not incorrect. ED has had horrible connectivity since the days of Beta back in 2013. Some people seem to have no problem, others can't hardly connect to anyone, but it's been a consistent problem since before the game's public launch. Location plays a part. Connection quality plays a part. Particular ISP's play a part. All three apparently need to be in line like the pins on a lock to make everything click.

The second Official Multiplayer Connectivity Thread from FEBRUARY 2014 is here.

OP, you can look in this thread for tips but after trying for over a year to connect with friends I will tell you to save the effort, especially if you are trying to instance with more than one. I've tried every trick in the book. There are some players who just won't ever appear in the same instance. Ever. And for those you do manage to connect with, you might not be able to message each other see the same enemy targets. It's infuriating.

I believe that most people don't play ED with a regular group and don't realize how bad the matchmaking really is. I think most CMDRs who play in open see hollow squares on their scanners and think everything works great because they don't try to interact with other players. Wings was supposed to fix it but did not. The CQC update was supposed to fix it but did not. People wonder why it takes 30 minutes to get a CQC game or why no one is playing it? It's because it uses the same matchmaking mechanics and P2P networking. It just doesn't work for a lot of people.

Thank you guys, info appreciated.

This morning managed to at last meet up in GROUP mode... and we winged up, wing beacon was on plus we were using in game communication. It was Epic.

Tried again with another friend..... ZILCH, he and I tried everything, even OPEN play as well as Group.

So its seemingly very touch and go,.... which is sad.

Yeah, it's pretty much my biggest beef with this game. There should be a way to literally force people together, no matter the connection. If I want to play with someone with a little bit of lag(250 ms isn't even that bad, unless there's packet loss), I should be able to. I thought that's what Private Group and Wings were for, but the game still won't match you together with certain people. It's pretty frustrating.
