Newcomer / Intro Help for an old player, hoping to help a new player...

We are currently on our route to Maia. Can we split the scanning work as a Wing, and share the profits? Is there a best way to do this?

Wingmates might get some credits when you sell the data, similar to trading commodities, but as far as I know your scans and discoveries are individual. If you didn't scan it you didn't log it.

1. I hear people say they are having trouble wining-up - never had an issue with it myself.

2. Wing missions can be OK but if you both are tyros then wing pirate kills might be a bit much if one of you is a good combat pilot then that's OK. Wing trading is good when for example you are bopping about in a trade Cutter and the new guy is still building-up their balance.

3. All small ships caome with an ADC and SCA as standard, larger ships only SCA is standard issue.
When are we getting the auto pilot and auto trader auto combat?

No, if you are both in system I think you share the tags and the credits. Of course Maia is fully tagged to that bit is moot but the credits should be shared for wing-members actually in system when scanning. (I believe - not done it.)

If you do want to go to Farseer in open, just make sure you know how to escape from other players.

Usually this means submitting to the interdiction and then high waking out to a new system as soon as you are able.

You need a shield/hull that can take around 10-15 seconds of shots giving you enough time to escape.

Cobras are good as even unengineered they are fast.

Jumping into Deciat - risking the amount of effort it took you to get to Maia and buy a Meta Alloy - can add a certain frisson to your gameplay but if you're not happy losing that bet, don't play the game and use Solo or PG.

Good hunting.

As we're doing this now, as a wing, when my wingman discovers planets with his FSS, they are updating on mine. DSS data is updating in the same way. I will report back when we hand the data in as well.
Out of curiosity, does this work if you're each scanning a different system? If you jump to his system afterwards are all bodies already identified to you?

We've stopped for tea/dinner but when we get back to it I will give it a go and let you know... if someone else hasn't already. From the replies above, I don't think it will work.

Ok, that makes sense. A bit of a shame though... I like the idea of the open play. Maybe we'll call for an escort... ;)

Play in Open, but play smart. Until you have the piloting skills and a ship designed to survive, you may be a juicy target for certain players. This can all be pretty easily avoided.

1. Seal clubbers tend to leech around a limited number of systems:
  • CG systems
  • Deciat (Farseer's base) and some other engineer systems
  • relog mat/data sites ie Jameson's, Dav's Hope, etc.
  • Shinrarta Desra
  • Powerplay home worlds

In total that amounts to nearly none of the 10s of thousands of systems in the Bubble. Simply avoid them.

To further mitigate...
1. Always check your scanner as soon as you jump into a system. Any hollow squares could be a potential attacker. If you're carrying precious cargo - exploration data, meta alloys, mission cargo - quickly select a system and be ready to jump if they try to get behind you.

2. Make your last jump into Deciat in Solo/PG, unlock & do your engineering, then switch back to Open and jump out of the system safely.

3. Find an escort/decoy to accompany you.

PS As for wing supply missions, yes, they are most often worth it. I took one for 900 silver which paid 50mcr. It cost me about 25mcr to buy, so I made 25mcr and my wingmate made 50mcr - all wingmate get the full reward, it is not split.

I'm in a system that aftre scanning with the FSS is dripping with Non Human Signal Sources. Most are threat level 7 or 8, but one is a level 3. Is there anything worth investigation here, or am I likely to get an unwelcome probing?

edit - When I target them, a timer starts counting down. After it runs out, they disappear.

edit edit - I dropped in on a level three and immediately got attacked by something I didn't hang around to see.

All the signal sources appear and stay until their timer runs out whether you target them or not.

The level determines what level of terror excitement you are going to find the higher the number the more risky it gets.

Level 3 is usually Scouts which are at least vulnerable to normal weapons.

If I'm on a delivery mission, with goods given by one station to take to another, and I get blasted enroute, is that mission then impossible to complete?

I got interdicted as I was approaching the station. I escaped that interdiction but went immediately in to a second interdiction. I was on the escape vector as per usual but it submitted me, minus my shields and I got blasted within seconds. Feels like a pretty annoying glitch, possibly my bad internet connection.

I tried buying the same amount of items and taking them to the station for delivery but it's not letting me drop them off on the mission tab, so I assume the mission is not possible to finish... Can someone confirm that? I had two other missions stacked that I also re-purchased units for. I won't bother heading to those stations If I won't be able to use those items for the missions.

Thanks

It says so somewhere in the mission (and cargo) description: the cargo is mission specific and can't be replaced if lost.
So no, you can't replace it with stuff you bought on a market. If you cleaned out the source depot and delivered at least half to the target depot you can do a partial delivery, but that's about it.

Wing-Exploration works as long as you wait for your whole wing to be in the system - everyone involved will get the scan data, and even the first discovery (Both names show up in the system map then - just saw one case yesterday in the bubble. When CMDR A already starts scanning while CMDR B is still in hyperspace, CMDR B will only get credit for bodies scanned afterwards. I think they will still be resolved on the navigation menu and can't be scanned anymore, but I might be working on faulty memory here. CMDR B could still DSS them.

Hehehe... You got lucky... When I was a beginner, I was also curious and dropped in one of those... I got immediately hit by a caustic missile and lost my ship roughly 45s later, even though I jumped out immediately... At that time, I had no idea what to do, so I was just watching my ship being eaten alive... Now I know what to do.. Do you? :)

One more thing regarding gankers and griefers: althoug I am glad they are part of the universe and I do enjoy encountering them, there is a piece of advice: do not fall for a trap. I was once evaporated by a griefer, I respawned at the station where I got griefed and I was watching a conversation between this griefer and his next victim:
"Someone help me please!"
"What do you need commander?"
"I'm stranded far away from station, my ship is malfunctioning, I need someone to guide me to the station!"
"Hold on, on my way, where are you?"
"Roughly 70km from the station"
"OK, on my way"

Long story short, the last message I read:
"How did you kill me that fast?"

So always watch your six and always think twice, before rushing to help someone...

And one final final note: gankers tend to attack in the last moment, when you are busy landing... So even if you think you know how to escape, they often surprise you when you least expect it...

Thanks for everyones advice on dealing with...gankers...seal bashers....humans....whatever they are, hanging around navBeacons like it was Kings Cross station in the eighties...

I like Elite for it's dark edgy atmosphere, and these low-life scum probably add to that. We will take all your advice with us when we go, and possibly even go there in an armoured Type-9 with all guns blazing if we can afford it... : )

When I played Elite some years ago, there was a group went by the name of NULL who I believe went around protecting against this kind of thing. Are they still around?

If you're landing, are you not in the protection zone of the station?

Sure, you are in a protection zone... But their ships are deadly and your ship is just a fly on their windshield... They will kill you within 10 seconds, before any station protection can do any significant harm to them...

Thanks Cmdr, we will take a look!

Yeah, when you put it like that, I see what you mean.

Got a question about engineering...

When you go to Farseer to engineer your FSD (or whatever you’re engineering) does it give you the ability to engineer any ship you get, or only the specific one that you’re in at the time of visiting?
