Help me enjoy this game

I've run into a bit of a problem here.

I paid over 90$ for this game because I love the idea of it. I have never played the old Elite games, but I love space / sci-fi / astronomy, and I am a pilot in real life. I grew up wanting to be Han Solo, and the idea of a sandbox space game where you actually fly your own ship is amazing.

I want to enjoy EVE, and admire the range and complexity of it's crafting, ownership, and economics - but I just can't get over how mathematical and hands off the combat system is... I need to put my stick, rudder, and track IR to good use! It quickly gets boring. I thought ED was going to be the answer to my prayers, basically EVE with hands on combat.

So I bought ED beta just before Gamma so I could play it until launch. I appreciate the size and scientific accuracy of the game and galaxy. The graphics, ship handling, combat, and everything involving the mechanics are great. Unfortunately, the list ends there. The content in this game is non-existent. It feels like a well polished and crafted skeleton of a game, but there is no meat to it.

There are a very limited range of activities to conduct - exploration (which quickly gets old), trading (which even more quickly gets old), and limited NPC combat. All of these tasks are highly repetitive, and you need only do them two or three times before the experience is just rinse and repeat. New ships are extremely expensive, so you need to "grind" to raise the funds to try out new ships. Sadly, exploration and combat just can't compare with trading for reward vs time invested. If I am going to be forced to do a repetitive task to raise money, I want to get the largest payoff for the least time invested. Perhaps the payoffs need tweaking so combat, exploration, and trading are equally rewarding for the time invested?

There is no player ownership of anything. No crafting, no stations, not even guilds. The only thing you own is your own ship, so there is no sense of investment to the ED world. Player interaction is very minimal, and there are few social tools. I want to go to my gaming group and convince everyone to buy this game, but I cant because I feel like we would all just be playing the same singleplayer game.

So I ask the community - help me look at this a different way. How do you derive your FUN for this game? I REALLY want to like this game, because I love the visual and tactile aspect of it - but the content just can't hold my interest. Am I doing it wrong? Are my expectations of an EVE with stick and rudder combat just too unrealistic? Am I just not enough of a 1984 fanboy to appreciate this game properly?

Traders need to be able to hire players to protect them, players need to be able to hire players to kill either other players/authorities/pirates.

That'd be a good start.

Best wait till the new year's update adding wings and other basic social functionalities. As Mr. Braben said from very beginning, think of Elite's development model as Minecraft - yes you have 'released' playable version, but by no means its finished yet.

Waiting is difficult, no doubt... :)

Yes kinda, this is the type of game "as for now" where you need to create your own content, this is a skeleton of a game as you so piut it a very polished one tho. the game desingers had just over 1 mill in cash investments to build this game and for what they have given us i salute them, we can def expect more in the future but for now its either grinding for the best ship which would take months if not years, or enjoy what you can fly and make your own path and create your own content.

I would say... Expect new content soon. There's more to come. If the current state of the game isn't to your liking or doesn't fulfill your expectations, needing others to convince you of anything is not going to fill that inherent need you have. So my suggestion is: Just put it down and come back every so often to check out the new added features. Perhaps one of them will spark that interest you have and can't seem to find currently in the game. However, let me add that your expectations sound much like mine. Yet I find ED totally fulfilling and gratifying. I've played well over 400 hours since early Beta and can only look forward to the game growing more and more. But I've just taken a stance of not aking for too much too soon. ED is and will always be a WIP.

I paid $150 for ArcheAge. I played for a week and then uninstalled the game and moved on.

For me it was the only game I bought that I didnt like but that just happens sometimes

Sapper31 - There you go you've hit the nail on the head, 100% agree and like you quit EVE for the same reason.

There is currently nothing in the game which would warrant either playing with friends or playing beyond a certain point. It's a bloody shame because a lot of the "older" generation people on this forum are completely happy with the current state of affairs and I'm not exactly a spring chicken anymore.

Interesting - what do you enjoy doing with your time? Have you achieved the higher end ships or are you grinding up to them? Are you trying to increase your rank? I'm just curious of what holds the interest of people who invest alot of time in this game - what motivates you?

make your own path and create your own content.

Elaborate please, given the confines of what you can do in this game. Are you suggesting there is some form of content creation I don't know about, or are you suggesting I pretend there is content? I keep seeing quotes similar to yours and they are confusing.

Drawing comparisons to PnP roleplaying games is a false equivalence, because in PnP roleplaying the game world / mechanics are flexible to the actions and desires of the player. Imagine Frontier as the GM, if I write them a letter saying "Hey I want to take these minerals I've refined and the credits I've accumulated to construct a station now please" I would very likely not receive a response at all. A GM need only say "sure whatever, roll a D20 to make sure it doesn't explode in your face". If I pretend i've made a station, and pretend i'm making money at my own personal trading post - I'm just delusional because I am not making any money, ships, ship parts, rank, faction reputation, or anything that is recognizable by the other players or capable of influence the game world. At that point I exist only inside the reality I have created for myself, and if I could do that convincingly I would have no need for video games.

As one of the older players (speaking for myself, unlike some others on here I don't purport to be the voice of all) that "happy" is subjective. The game has flaws, there are bugs that I would have hoped were sorted by now and yes, there isn't a lot of content. However I like others I suspect are still "happy" flying around this amazing galaxy doing the limited things we can do while waiting for the more social aspects to arrive. Yes, in previous games I was in a guild and enjoyed every minute of it. But there is still enough to keep me happy.

Personally I try to differ from the standard way of doing things. I've changed my docking technique, supercruise style etc from what is shown on all the videos and actually become better at it. Voice attack adds a wonderful element to the game too, try it out if you already haven't.

But again, it's horses for courses. It won't suit everyone. Not now certainly and probably not ever.

details.

night 1: I bought a HOTA system and hooked it up setup all the keys. Then learned how to fly and many of the tutorial.
night 2: I learned about exploring and decided to cruise around systems looking for planets. I got the hang of how that works and did it again, and again, and again.
night 3: learned a little more about how trading works and how to make actually good money with even a small ship. watched some dev videos so I get a good understanding of the universe and how our actions affect it.
day 4/5: setup my Oculus Rift to work (nightmare)!
night 6: played with the Oculus Rift in my new ship the Adder, looking for planets, oh and I found a earth like planet with city lights so I need a surface scanner so I can get some big bucks even though I dont need it.

as of yet not bored. oh and I tried some slavaging and I plan to do that tonight now that I found a place I can sell without getting fined.

Personally I'm still enjoying this game, but the points you raised do resonate with me. At my present rate I think I might play the game for another week or two, but then I'll drift away. I'll have had good value for money, no question, but it will be a shame if the game doesn't keep me involved for longer.

I wonder whether the problem is that fair percentage of the player base loves the game the way it is, and the devs love the game the way it is, and I don't know whether they want to push the boundaries further, to create something really special, because they feel it is already special enough for them (and I hate saying that because the game is already really special, in many ways).

David Braben often talks about creating a 'rich' gaming environment. I hope that he understands, or will start to appreciate, the difference between a 'rich' game and a 'detailed' game. Because the latter might, on first impressions, be spectacular but it quickly becomes boring; whereas the former is a source of constant interest.

Goes without saying that many will not agree with me ...

This is gonna be good.

Help me enjoy this game

Play naked, that's what I do whilst mapping trade routes, taking missions, supporting my favoured factions, pirating, smuggling, slave trading, the odd bit of mining, running the gauntlet through combat zones etc etc etc

It was posted above by baael. It kind of goes into the elaboration you're asking for. There's also a second post I did there that further elaborates on "creating your own content."

I don't usually link to my own posts with exception to the guide I wrote but I think the explanation I have on the linked thread could really help people enjoy Elite more.

Edit: I strongly agree the comparison between PnP and elite is not a good one.

when people say no content part of me thinks what they really mean is a story driven experience.

If that is the case this is not a story driven game or rather not a narrative driven game. With that said, if you are interested in more context of the universe from a story standpoint there are several Elite Dangerous novels that have been approved to fit the lore.

Well it helps that I took a month off from running my company, just to play Elite btw. I've done everything in game. From exploring, to bounty hunting, to mining, to running missions, some PvP, Combat Zones. Currently I'm delving into the rares scene and exploring at the same time. I don't focus on the credits. My rank is increasing on its own I just got Competent in battle, Dealer in trade and Trailblazer in exploration, but if you ask me when specifically I ranked up, I wouldn't know.
My motivation? Well, it may seem a redundancy, but in my case it's just playing Elite. :D

I will qoute myself:

I see this repeated very often, I think that people (like me) who are complaining about content, dont need "guided tour", they need interaction. They don't want to be race drivers or R2-D2's, but rather economists, politics, pirates, smugglers, and they want to feel that universe is alive and responding for their actions in normal player scale, not only somehow on huge economy what isn't even visible if you dont look really closesly.
