I'd recommend some of the older classics, the sort of things i keep installed for fun play.
Chaos: Battle of the Wizards (via spectrum emulator or online clone

Dungeon Keeper 2 (absolute classic, still runs, fun to play).

Star Trek: Armada 2 (very moddable, its hard to get the mods these days, but i think you can still find some like the Babylon 5 mod, and there is still kind of the ongoing Fleet Operations total conversion which is pretty good).

As PP said, Planescape Torment is pretty awesome for a story oriented game.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto - great single player story.

Erm, yeah, my list is a bit overly focused on strategy games, but those are the sort of games i tend to load up on my laptop, espcially when travelling, as they tend to be light on battery usage and the sorts of games you can play for extended periods in a variety of locations.
Oh, just remembered:
Thief: The Dark Project (the original)
