Help me pick a new Ship

Hello!

Not a completely new player, but have reached a bit of an odd point. I don't really specialise as a trader/bounty hunter/explorer or whatever, I just sort of potter around doing random missions, so I like using a multi purpose ship. I have been using the Asp Scout, and despite it's crappy reputation I've been really enjoying flying it as (an admittedly hideously overpriced) big Cobra MKIII.

But now I'm getting a bit bored, other than the Asp Explorer (which I don't want to go down the route of for spurious reasons) what other good multipurpose ships are there? I'm stuck in a cash/funds zone where the ship prices go from around 4-6 million to tens of millions, so I guess just worrying a bit I'll be stuck flying the same thing for a while now.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum and the galaxy!

Cobra III and the Federal Dropship are the best sub-Python all-rounders, not counting the Asp Explorer

keelback is also interesting. if you don't mind navy ranking, a courier can be a small multipurpose, too (i have spend most of 1.5/2.0 in one).

but generally i'd recommend getting a second ship. one for combat, one for everything else. on my third account i have a lot of fun with a t6 for everything beside combat. a dolphin would also make an interesting non combat ship. buy a viper mkIII/eagle for combat along with it.

Thanks! I used to fly a Cobra and been tempted to go back to it, but been liking the Asp scout for having some of the same benefits (nice maneuverability, mostly) but just having bigger internals.

Might try and check out the Dropship, concern is I powerplay pledged to Lavigny-Duval so I'm guessing raising my rank with the federation will be a bit awkward. Is the Imperial Courier worth looking at too?

Yeah, I should have said at the moment I have a Keelback I use for Fighter excursions and an Imperial Eagle I use for combatty stuff, but I find swapping them around can be a pain. I like the multipurpose because I can do boom delivery missions around the place and if I spot any "kill a pirate lord" or w/e missions can pick them up alongside generally.

Courier totally appeals too, so might focus a bit on ranking up my imperial navy-ness.

To be honest, what you need is a Python. However, as you said, it's expensive for where you are now.

Courier is an interesting ship too. I prefer a Cobra because nostalgia, but it's not bad. DBX works too if you don't want to go the AspX route like everyone else.

Sooner or later you'll have to try the Python my dear... ^_~

Yeah, I think that's where I'm headed for sure, just stuck in a slightly weird place money/gear wise. I think if I sold off all my other ships I'd probably be up to around 36millionish credits, so still a ways to go yet. Might go back to doing passenger runs combined with a bit of en route exploration to raise some funds up.

You need to pimp your Python and you will need arround 200m Cr for.

Maybe if you like passengers missions a Dolphin could be a better move in order to boost your bank account first...

Dolphin for passenger missions and keep a planetary hangar in storage for scan missions with the Dolphin when u get bored running passengers. Easiest way to pile up money right now in the bubble probably if you dont want to do a lot of combat. Put an advanced discovery scanner and a surface scanner on it for extra exploring income.

I run 1 luxury and 1 business class or first class cabin. I only do passenger missions that are like 300Ly or under round trip mostly. I find a lot of them in the $2-5mil range in the Lave area for a 30 minute trip its not bad. I'm allied with all the factions though.

Still trying to psych myself to do a passenger run out to the California Nebula to see the Alliance base out there. I see passenger missions for it regularly in the Lave area.

In your price range, I'd say Diamondback Explorer is a very good all-rounder. Got mine up to a 42ly jump with some engineering. Had a passenger cabin and cargo and an SRV. Did a little of everything.

Dolphin is pretty good, too. You can't really defend yourself, but its fast enough, you can generally get away.

But, I've just traded up to a Python. I'm going to miss the jump range of DBX, but the Python is a smooth ride, for sure.

As it turns out, despite having recently pledged with Lavigny-Duval I was close to ranking up to Midshipman with the Feds so ground that out in an safe system and bought the dropship. Haven't had a chance to A-Rate everything yet, but with the current set up I have having a complete blast. Loads of guns, loads of cargo space for mussing about. Off to Farseer later to try and sort the crappy jump range and I'll be sorted.

The answer is in the pic [yesnod]

If you have the rank, the money, and don't mind a bit of quirkiness, the Clipper's a great all-rounder. Decent at combat, decent jump range, good internals, which means good trader and great miner, its main drawback is "no outposts".

The Courier's a great ship too, insane shielding for its size, nice internals, good firepower. But it's a small ship (so you won't trade much). And it has heat issues.

Realistically the cobra 3 is the go to ship until you get to the 40 -50 Mil ships.
I use the clipper myself it took me a while to learn how to use it but with some engineering I think it is great.
I didn't want to go the python route like everyone.
Although I will be the first to admit the python is the logical choice it is almost to good at everything it has no competition yet.

Don't know why you wouldn't want to step to the Asp Explorer. Great jump range, 100 tons of cargo, a good smuggler, and decent in a fight.

But kind of what everyone has said, best all-around ship in he game is the Python. Just save your credits for her. Find a good data mission/trade mission loop and use your small ship until you get enough cash. I'd suggest HIP 10716/Wu Guinagi if you haven't ground out you empire rank.

Basically because he bought an Asp Scout, and that's it. What he really should do is sell the Asp Scout now and get the Asp Explorer, fly that while saving to get a Python.

Pound for pound (or ton for ton in this case) the Asp Explorer is the single best all-rounder ship in the entire game. The Python is great too, but it also costs 55 million credits plus you need about 200 million to properly outfit it and that's where it really gets you, whereas the AspX cost 6 million and you will need about 30 million for outfitting. You just can't beat the value and utility the Asp X offers for the price.

Yeah the AspX and the Python are in their respective price range the "objectively best" ships in the game.

Especially the AspX and its insane jump range for a ship able to haul up to 100t of cargo.
