Help me play Elite Dangerous in "Pain in the Butt" mode. Help me choose a single small ship to play forever! Lets be unique!

DBX

First ship I made some real cash in due to running passenger missions leveraging it’s great jump range. Likewise good for exploring. Can fit a size 4 shield and 4 boosters plus 2xM and 1xL hardpoints so not hideous at (PvE) combat, either, so long as you don’t get carried away. I guess you can probably mine in it as well, though I’ve not tried.

Alternative suggestion ... Type 10 Defender. Just for the hell of it. :)

Well, you mentioned the iClipper. I used it exclusively for about a year, and never ran out of things to do in it. G5 thrusters will get you 605 to 640 boost, 490+ at full throttle, so you can outrun anything you can't out fight. I armed mine with class 3 turreted, autoloading, long-range multi-cannons, and class 2 high capacity, overloaded seeker missles. This loadout solves the convergence problem, but it isn't going to take down any of the big 3. You can outrun them easily, though.

Just my 0.02 cr.

My biggest concern with the clipper is its size. I've always flown medium and small ships, so I worry about the idea of flying only a large ship; that it would somehow limit my gameplay due to being unable to land on outposts. With that said, I love the idea of having a ship that capable but that fast and nimble, being able to outrun anything that it can't kill. I think that's part of what drew me to the iCourier originally. Fast, agile ships are my bread and butter in most games; though its hard to imagine something as massive as the Clipper being that maneuverable.

Maybe an Adder? :D

Maybe something like an Adder? My Multi-role adder is more agile than a Courier, and boosts over 700 m/s! :D

Have you considered an Adder? Seven slots! :D

I dunno, how about an Adder? My multi-role Adder jumps way over 30LY, perfect for basic bubble work! :D

Who is going to hit a chaffing, tiny agile speedster like an Adder? Nobody, that's who! :D

Did you know the Adder comes with three hardpoints, including a spiffy medium one, all with perfect placement for fixed weapons? Good thing given its agility lends itself perfectly to it! Who needs gimbals when you have an Adder? Nobody! :D

No rough rider is gonna tangle with an Adder! It is simply a total PITA to target such a nimble and cunning craft! Besides, who but the most skilled pilots would fly an Adder? Trust me, you see one of these babies flying you better lay low! :D

Huh, who would have thought: the Adder does multi-crew! Put a medium turret on top and have your co-pilot go Max Max on your enemies! Or maybe just sip some tea while marveling at the most unique and iconic bridges in the whole galaxy! :D

Lets be honest; you want an Adder!

Of all the ships... why did the Adder have to be the one that best fits my needs?!

On paper it looks great, but in actuality it looks like just another space shuttle. I'm flying around in a sci fi wonderland filled with adventure and other cool stuff! I don't wanna look like I stole something out of NASA's parking lot and am putting it around like John Crichton amongst the more advanced life of the universe.

I'd flip it around: you'll be among the few flying a bona fide space shuttle with all the others flying their triangles and pancakes. :)

One caveat though: the Adder is for experienced pilots. That, again, is not a joke! A ship like a Vulture is easy: going from 4 to 0 pips in engine costs you about 10% in performance. You can basically go 3-0-3 and call it a day. Not with the Adder: a high-end Adder when going from 4 to 0 pips in engine loses 60% agility!

Personally I love agile ships, followed by fast ships. The Adder is both, as is the Courier. The Viper MK3 can be both, but it places massive restrictions on outfitting. The sidey and eagle can be both but don't have the internals.

Finally: I find VR is more compelling with 'nearby stuff'. I FSS mode you don't really feel the 3D element as everything is so far away. A 'limiting' cockpit such as the Adder has is great in VR, it really feels like you are there.

In your NASA Volkswagen transit van.

Yea, the Courier was definitely on my mind; the speed and agility is pretty amazing and it has a ton of slots. It's a tiny multi-role; and the aesthetics... like an Imperial Cadillac CTS vs the Adder Volkswagon transit van.

I do really like that it has a multi-crew seat. That's a huge boon over other ships of its own size, even bigger ships like that iCourier.

The internal look for VR is something I hadn't considered. Since there aren't many ships that have that sort of "real stuff around you" feel, and I primarily play ships with Lakon style class canopies, so tbh I've never tried it before.

It does have a cup holder... bonus there.

The courier is awesome. My main gripes are:

1) it's agility is not that good as it may seem due to poor lat/vert thrusters. This is the Driftships little sister.

2) annoying hardpoint placement. You either get one central fixed, or a central+side asymetrical setup. :/

3) Guardian shield boosters undermines it's 'small shield tanker' reputation.

Still an eminently viable choice, with a glorious canopy.

I think you'll be very happy in a Type 6.

Eight optional slots, and large ones for a ship its size. You can strip her down and take her exploring, or fill those internals with HRPs and have well north of 2000 hull points before engineering. The view from the cockpit is incredible - same glass cathedral as the Type 9, but at a more approachable scale. Actually quite maneuverable. Having only two small hardpoints is a little limiting, but I feel like it's a fair compromise for such an otherwise OP ship. And lest you think I speak of what I don't know: I've taken a T6 beyond Beagle Point, and into Thargoid combat, and to many Community Goals (in Open) and lived to tell the tale.

My caveats: you might be tempted to pick up a Keelback instead, for the better hardpoints and multicrew seat. While the Keelback can be a fun ship, you won't enjoy it as your sole ship. It sacrifices too much capacity and agility for a fighter bay that you'll rarely use. However, if you find yourself happily set up in a T6, you might want to keep an Adder in the garage anyway, so you have the option to go multicrew or blow up core asteroids if you need to.

I never realized that the Type 6 wasn't multicrew. I went straight from a viper to a Keelback and skipped it entirely. I just always assumed it had more than 1 seat!

Awesome suggestions from everyone so far!

For those saying Cobra IV: You are absolutely correct, and would be my first choice... BUT... new account. No access :(

On a side note: I'm honestly shocked that I've gotten a recommendation for the Eagle but so far not 1 for iCourier.
I can wholeheartedly recommend the iCourier. It can do everything except hauling large volumes of cargo, is a joy to fly especially once engineered, is almost untouchable in PvP due to its speed and size, and is suitable for exploration (jump range and canopy shape).

It also looks the part particularly with the ship kit applied. I used to be a Cobra fanboy (still am), but if I had to cut down my fleet to one ship, I'd choose the Courier.

Cobra 3! Its a really good all purpose sm ship with a decent potential jump range, good combat ability, fair cargo capacity and great handling. Imo the best sm all purpose ship.

I saw you dont want to use some specific ships but you might as well ask 'whats your least favorite ship and I'll use that...'. Because those are the most popular ships for a reason.

So yea, if you want the logical choices...

For small cobra 3.
For medium python.

If you want something no one uses unless that feel they should punish them selves, asp scout
