Hi Folks, HELP PLEASE
.
I want a gaming Laptop for Elite, Yes it HAS to be a Laptop.
.
Recently bought an AlienWare 17 with NVidia 1060 6Gb. First one was faulty out of the box and was exchanged.
2nd one !
a) It does NOT have Tobii eye tracking as advertised it has Tobii Presence sense. Be Warned very different things !
b) Fans are LOUD so loud that I went to bed an woke up thinking I had left the machine running, turned out to be a low flying 747
c) Nvidia Game Experience simply won't play with this machine, I think this is due to DELL Locking it down so much
e) And here is the kicker...
.
On 1080p resolution and settings at Medium running Elite the FPS on a planet surface was 35 to 45 !!! ON MEDIUM
Sound cutting in and out, the EXTRA Tobii tracker 4c I have bought was jumping all over the place
Fans LOUD, and the CPU all cores maxing out at 100% ....... Even setting it to LOW it simply cannot handle Elite.
This machine is going back today and I am getting a refund. (Did I mention the fans are LOUD?)

Here is my question ... Do you want toast ? (Sorry geek joke !)
.
What machine should I buy ?
Needs to be a laptop
Needs to be a 17" monitor
Needs to run Elite at High settings in 1080p
Nice if it looked good, (The A17 is a supermodel.....with all the issues of a super model!)
Budget MAX £2k
.
Does such a machine exist ? am I expecting too much in a laptop ? All constructive help is greatly appreciated
MSI Looks good but which one ?
Origin machine may be
Or PC Specialist Bland but powerful ?
.
Thank you commanders and fly safe o7

Yes. My son plays Elite: Dangerous on my old MSI GT70 Dominator. 1080P on high resolution settings. Here's an old video link from some of my 2015 gameplay on it to give you an idea as to the frame rate:

https://youtu.be/BymdOoh9mFM

This is an older laptop and may be harder to find. The newer GT72 can be found on amazon.co.uk for £1,346.04

Fan noise? That is probably going to something you'll have to get used to. Gaming laptops cram a lot of heat generating parts into a very small space.

There is no reason why it should be playing EDH that poorly, unless it isn't switching to the GTX 1060 to play the game. I would look in the power management settings in the GPU & set Elites to "prefer maximum performance" if it isn't already. Considering I'm getting 60+ FPS on my own system at high/ultra in 1080P (see the sig) I would say that is probably the most likely issue.

The rest of the issues i.e. high CPU Usage fans constantly on high etc, should all be solved if you can get it to switch to the 1060 for Elite.

I play on an HP Omen ..... great display, pretty good sound (but headphones are best), love the multi colored illuminated keyboard at night, and it runs cool, even in high ambient temperatures. No graphical problems.

No complaints after over a year of use now. I feel I made a good choice for my needs [heart]

Is the MSI 980M as good as the 1060 series cards ?

I'd personally go with 1060 rather than 980M
Also, if you are worried about the noise, try looking at ASUS ROG laptops. They have a bit of a reputation for inconsistent quality (They don't break more than MSI, though) but they have far superior cooling and general user comfort.

I have a Scan 3XS I7 LT with a 970M (3GB) and 16GB RAM, fan is pretty quiet except sitting in stations, but even then its not what I would call loud. I play on a Full HD 37 inch TV. The only downside is after nearly 2 years its developed an intermittent issue with the lt screen, which never affects my ED gaming. It was specced out so it wouldn't be stressed - I don't like heat.

I run E.D on an MSI GS73 VR which has the GTX 1060 and a superb 120 Hz 1080p screen. I opted for the 32GB RAM version as I do a lot of video editing and graphic design but 16GB is plenty for E.D.

Super slim and reasonably quiet considering the form factor. 120 FPS across the board, except on certain planets where it drops to 70 ish. Impressive stuff, especially at ultra settings. It will also run the Rift and Vive very well but you'll have to lower the graphics setting a bit.

I also have the slightly older GS70 Ghost Pro with the GTX 970m which also runs the game very well albeit at a VSynced 60 FPS. Worth a look if budget doesn't allow for the newer version.

:)

OK, so how did it end !!! The Alien ware machine was a disaster... more research seems to imply it was bios ... but for a brand new supposedly top of the line machine messing with the bios is a poor show, and the 2nd one at that!! Got a full refund. Close call then between an acer machine or MSI
.
So bought MSI GT72 VR from laptops direct.com 1070 nvidia card
Free present bundle, headphones OK, mouse cheep the bag BLOODY NICE BAG....
Worth using its a very worthy laptop rucksack
.
Fans nice and quiet !
Running 1080 majority setting in high , some in ultra
G-sync monitor and the frame rate is pretty much pegged at 60fps even in the SRV
GPU says 60% and CPU 50% so some head room
Still working out the kinks but over all bloody good gameing laptop.
.
The Alien ware is a supermodel se*y as hell but poor build and a bit dumb....
.
MSI is solid, quiet and does the job very nicely
Delivery was next day for 9 quid and the bonus bundle worth having...
.
Fly safe commanders o7 and thanks for the help

I bought an Asus, 2 years ago, a ROC.

It built like a brick, a fan for CPU and one for the M980 graphics chip. Super quiet even at 70/80 degrees.

My last three Sony laptops died because of cheap power connections.

You could swing this Asus round on its power lead and your only concern would be denting the plasterboard in your apartment.

Can't recommend one more.

looks like OP already got his laptop but i'll add to the pool of info here.

when im not at my desktop im on the road, usually in hotels for a few days at a time at work.
I purchased a ASUS ROG GL752VW laptop, it has a 960m in it, not gonna run the game maxed out, more like medium settings but you can pipe it out to the hotel flat screen TV which is cool too. Its a lot of computer to lug around the world to china from the US but it does the job. Runs elite very well.

when traveling you're typically up against crappy internet connections as your bottle neck.

the first guy who invents a travel portable full sized joystick is going to be a millionaire. using a game controller while on the road sucks

You will need a powerful gaming laptop if you are going to run Elite on it. Some of the specs to look for are latest 9th Gen Core i7/i9 processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB SSD storage, dedicated graphics card with 4GB or more VRAM and as you said you want 17 inch display, you can go with one. Some of the machines you can look for are MSI GS65/GS75 Stealth, MSI GE63 Raider, ASUS ROG Strix Scar and Hero III, and many more.

I recommend you look at ASUS RoG or HP Omen gamer laptops. Both are way better IMO than Dell.

I feel you are overspecs... i have an Asus FX503VD is a core I5 9 gen, 16 Gb ram, and a 1050 mobile invidia... it runs elite in 1080 with everyting on high and no problems, the lowest gramerate i had wes 45 fps in a thargoid site when the machine worked.. but usually everything is on 60 fps

Played Elite with max settings in 2014 on the top of the line A17. I still have it. Tried to sell it but everyone wanted it for free. First thing I did was uninstall the Intel GPU chip. It was too confusing. I bought it to play games not spreadsheets. If you play games on a laptop with a high-end GPU (nvidia...etc) you have to leave it plugged in anyway.
Windows 8.1 (64Bit) English
Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (9.5mm)
Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 @ 5GHz + Bluetooth 4.0
8-cell Lithium Ion (86 wHr) Battery
Intel Core i7-4710MQ processor (Quad Core, 6MB Cache, Overclocked up to 3.7GHz w/Turbo Boost)
17.3 inch (439.42 mm) WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare Display
16GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (2x8GB)
English Keyboard
AMD Radeon R9 M290X with 4GB GDDR5
1TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gb/s

Paid about $1900. Circumstances dictated I needed a laptop.

Most of that didn't really exist in 2017.

Where did you even find this thread?
