My biggest question with these place is what are the differences between resource extraction site, resource extraction site high, and resource extraction site low. Do they all have different rewards or do they all give the same pay?
Low RES, RES, and High RES will all have security forces to help out and take out pirates. Hazardous RES have no cops so you are on your own, though you can join in on other's fights.
Low RES = lower end ships only. I think the biggest ship I ever seen in one was a Clipper and Python and the highest rank NPC I came across was master (I think?). Pay will be lower for lower end ships and lower ranked pilots, but it is way safer. Then as you go from that to RES (regular) you get slightly more challenges. Then High has the bigger ship occasionally and the pilots you find are ranked higher, deadly and up with an occasional lower ranked pilot.

The other thing to point out is that Resource Extraction Sites are mainly for Bounty Hunting - NOT - Mining.
For experienced players, I agree.Wrong. Resource extraction sites drop far more fragments and have far better asteroids that can also be easily revisited. They are very much for mining.
Obviously new or unprotected miners better start out mining in a safer location, but in a low RES pirates really aren't a threat if you have the largest possible shield generator and double chaff equipped. Security will take them out before they can get through any shields.

In my experience, you get a higher yield per hour outside of the RESs because you are not stopping to deal with NPCs every few minutes trying to take yer lucky charms. IMHO, RES mining is not worth the extra bits unless you refuse to use prospectors. I like less hassle when I am out mining, and as long as the ring is pristine and the type of stuff I'm looking for, I'll take the solitude.
There was a theory that dropping into HAZ res yielded better results for asteroids. The trick was to drop in them, but immediately boost away from the site until you were well away from the point where ships spawn, so you could mine safely.
I am not entirely sure if it matters if you drop into a res site, or just at a random spot in the ring. But I do know the best way to find Painite is to find Pristine metallic rings. Though painite is so rare, you'll be mining for HOURS just fill a relatively small sized hold. Not worth it in my opinion. Thats including bringing along limpets, obviously. One should never mine without limpets.
Not to mention, not all rings have res sites. Even if you find a Pristien Metallic, their may not be any res sites to test the theory.
Until you have built up your experience thesis what I'd recommend for a new starting miner:So where should a new player mine then?
