HELP ! Why are VR frame rates so low ?

Hi Commanders (WMR Samsung Odyssey)

I new to VR but beginning to think it's not worth the effort! No way to enter text in Galmap, tripling up all the controls on my X52 pro and frame rate issues
I cannot get decent frame rates, on an MSI Gaming Laptop Dominator Pro GT72VR 6RE So I7 CPU and Nvidia 1070 GPU 16GB DDR 4 ram

My CPU and GPU are only running around 50% but the frame rate is 45 or lower, I have tried all sorts of settings but to no avail. Plase see the attached screenshot
I have tried to get as much information as possible in one picture

As you can see the CPU has loads of "late starts" (Whatever that means !) Yet the CPU is only at 63% ???

Any advice is most welcome

I had the same issues. The only thing to solve all of them was to do a clean Windows 10 install, then Nvidia drivers 388.59, then ED then Oculus software.

I'm now running ED in "VR Medium" without any stuttering, tracking flashes or slowdown. It was my last resort after trying a ton of other suggestions.

i7-67k, 16GB Ram, SSD, GTX 970.

The only setting that i see that might be an issue is the HMD set at 1.5. This setting really taxes the computer and leads reduction in framerates.

Try setting that to 1 and bring up the SS to one as well.

It could be a driver issue or a software issue so as Delmonti said, a clean install could fix the issue.

Been up n down with SS settings, I've installed the latest insider preview of Windows 10, the new game mode has helped added a significant boost to the Framerate but still not right
going to keep tweaking o7

It is because asynch reprojection is on.
This is not necessarily a bad thing.
I recommend not even looking at fps for a week.
Focus on how it feels to play.
It does this because predictability is the second best thing for vr and it won't disengage until you have enough headroom on all parts in the pc go push 90fps native.
If you'r CPU is at 63% with async on, a rough explanation would be it then assumes it would need 126% for 90fps, a gross simplification but in cases where CPU has limited me it hasn't disengaged until it went below 45%.

I would decrease FX that is a heavy load, also, but also upping terrain work towards the right.
This is mostly there to offset for poor or older gpu's and moves the work from CPU to GPU.
The newer gpu's are significantly better suited for the task.

Again, don't focus too much on framerates, try to focus more on how it feels to play and the game itself.
I know it's a bit of a platitude.

Good advice thanks, ive been testing and come close to the same conclusion, also new version of windows has game mode, that given me a 25boost! !
Thank you for the advice ;-) o7

That game mode is nothing but trouble and should be turned off immediately.
it's primarily the dvr function forcing a frame rate of 60 elite are one of the few still not handling this right so most vr titles don't suffer from this forced fps. And the double vision and blurry movement that ensues is enough to turn the game unplayable for me until I figured it out.

The vive or rift is not tuned for a variable frame rate.
The current vr systems are tailored to throttle to 45 if you can't get 90 native, It then interpolates an extra frame with updated tracking data. This prevents a lot of frame stepping issues, judder, jumps frames etc.
So for vr systems that are tuned to 90hz, like the rift and vive. 45 fps plays significantly better than 60fps.
In fact I prefer 45 and interpolation than 80fps.
Best is if course a genuine 90fps but so many situations in ED are poorly optimised, not to mention the net code itself so even one the most beastly machines get throttled down to 45fps.

Again, don't obsess on frame rate.

VR locks to 90FPS or 45FPS in most cases (this can be switched off but I'd not suggest meddling with that in your first few days of VR). If you are getting 45FPS clever tech is engaged to make you see 90FPS.

If you are not going below 45FPS I'd not worry too much unless you feel physically sick all the time.

What about heat build up? A while back, I noticed that my framerate had dropped for no obvious reason. When I looked at the settings in MSI Afterburner (a MSI GPU tweaking tool), I noticed throttling and high temperatures. Once I cleaned the fan filters on my case, things returned to normal.

Unlikely

Hmm re game mode. How do you kill it completely then? I'm using the insider build of Windows with a new game mode that gives priority to the game..
.
Re heat . Not this time :) I had that on an old gpu when the paste had dried out. I keep all my fan ports clean and it's sat on a powered cooling stand with 4 more fans forcing air cooling. Slightly OCD about cooling

As TorTorden stated, if its dropping to 45fps, don't worry. Thats normal, its the ASW feature kicking in when 90fps is simply out of reach on your hardware for the Elite detail settings you've set..

ASW interpolates a new frame between each real frame - you're actually seeing 90fps but only 45 are real frames. There are some visual artifacts but its better than seeing actual 45fps which can make some folks quite sick.
You can disable ASW by pressing Ctrl-Numpad-1 (must be a numpad key, with NumLock turned on). It will re-enable each time you start a VR application. this is intended - you have to disable it each time.

From the Oculus Developer Website:
Control-Numpad1: Disables ASW and returns to the standard rendering mode.
 • Control-Numpad2: Forces apps to 45Hz with ASW disabled. Depending on the application, you are likely to experience judder.
 • Control-Numpad3: Forces apps to 45Hz with ASW enabled. Enabling and disabling ASW will help you see the effects of ASW.
 • Control-Numpad4: Enables ASW. ASW will automatically turn on and off, depending on whether the app maintains a 90Hz frame rate. This will be the default rendering mode when ASW is officially enabled in the runtime.
Option 4 is the default.

VR is a different ball game as far as frame rate is concerned. Don't get hung up on it too much, and just enjoy the game.
