Help with binds .. clear instruction for dummies

Can someone give me a clear answer on binds?

I want to run keyboard and extreme 3d pro Logitech JS with voice attack with elite and dangerous horizon along with the SUV .. I have imported key binds. I have copied them to the right file path which has been listed on various sights. I find for some reason I loose the key binds, over time or if I update voice attack, although voice attack continues to work it looses the bind commands. It seems to me that the file name of key binds should register in the options menu control menu drop down but it doesn’t. Can someone give me a clear definitive solution? That will give me a clear outlined step by step approach to setting this up properly. It is getting frustratingly difficult.

Also a good sight to find other users working key binds for voice attack. 3d pro JS Logitech to work with ED Horizon inclusive of the SUVehicle. I’d be sooooo grateful.

A couple of guestions about this:
-is the filename of the bindings file you copied there still Custom.3.0.binds or Custom.4.0.binds?
-is the file path C:\users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings or similar?
-in the binds file, does line 2 start with <Root PresetName="Custom" ?

You could of course read the pinned (sticky) thread at the top of this sub-forum, that will give you a good idea why you are having issues:

So, in short, rename binds file (including line 2 inside the file) and never save copies in the same directory:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

P.S. The control assignment aspect of this game is abysmal, a complete disgrace that they can't even provide a "save as" button in the options / controls setting page.

Here's what I STRONGLY recommend (if you haven't already).

Locate your custom.V.binds file (where V is a version number, e.g. 4.0). It will probably be in ..

%localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Copy it to a new file called something meaningful (e.g. logitech_js.4.0.binds) in the same directory.

Edit that file in something like wordpad, change line 2 so the PresetName="logitech_js", and save it.

Next time you run Elite you will find "logitech_js" as one of the available presets. Use that from now on.

I pretty much guarantee that those bindings will never get clobbered again.

(sorry, kinda what Para Handy just said)

Forgot to cover this earlier. There is a website called EDRefCard (https://edrefcard.info ) where you can produce a printable version of your bindings or view and copy bindings that other people have published on there. So to view a list of published bindings for your Logitech3D for example go here:

If you find one that you like the look of, just download their bindings file - linked at the bottom of the individual bindings page, e.g. look at the bottom of this one:

NOTE: Bear in mind that some of these will be Odyssey binding files, (they are denoted by being version 4 - Horizons are version 3 - this also is listed in line 2 of the file) - you can tell these on the EDRefCard site as they will have an "ON FOOT" section in the keyboard commands.

I have no idea how to set up your Voice Attack - mine is set up via my HCS VoicePacks which can stick-in any missing binds that it needs.

The main thing is that if you rename your binds (including line 2 inside the actual file) then that will never get lost on errors, the name (in line 2) is what is shown in the drop-down presets list and finally, I repeat, don't keep copies in the same directory as that can cause any changes you make to not be saved.

DON'T LOOK UP! ;)

both sets of bind are usually in the same folder
along with there presets just rem v3.0.binds and its preset is for hor nothing to do with odd
and V4.0binds and its x4 preset is for odd nothing to do with hor
so my bind for odd reads PUPPYDOG CONTROL4.0.binds
and its preset reads
PUPPYDOG CONTROL
PUPPYDOG CONTROL
PUPPYDOG CONTROL
PUPPYDOG CONTROL
for the new odd spilt into 4 controls menu

and my old bind as per my old guide reads STRONTIUMDOG CONTROL3.0.binds (horizons and base game ed)
and its preset reads
STRONTIUMDOG CONTROL
(which should make sense once you read the guide ENGINEERED BY ZIEMAN & written by a dummie for dummies)
(as you can still be clever but thick@thesametime )

Thanks Zieman Yes to all your questions accept for the 3rd question but I have downloaded https://forums.frontier.co.uk/members/strontium-dog.39050/ doc which has been helpful and will follow the instruction for line 2 ... etc this should save loosing the binds.

Thanks for the site with various bind profiles I'll try them each and go with what I like. because I'm older building all the binds from scratch for me would be a challenge I think. Love the game started playing it when it came out at its beginning .. most of the graphics where just outlines no details and docking was horrendous in the beginning.

Cheers Cmdr Craig

Okay, renaming the Custom.3.0.binds or Custom.4.0.binds as something else, for example myLogitech3Dv1.binds and editing the file so that line 2 starts with <Root PresetName="myLogitech3Dv1" should fix your problem.
AFAIK any changes you make to your binds will be saved to Custom (game makes new one if not present), so you'll need to edit that filename and line 2 again to have changed bindings as new selectable preset. EDIT: seems that having own named binds in the AppData\...\Bindings folder and using that selected preset will save changes to the correct file.

There's an alternate location where to keep any custom bindings in case ..\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings still turns problematic, but it is slightly more cumbersome, especially at game update times.

While I won't say this definitively, for me, if I'm using "alecs_hotas4_binds" and I go into options and make binding changes, they get saved back to my "alecs_hotas4_binds" file and not to custom.binds.

Ok, that's good to know.
That's definitely a pro for keeping own named binds in the AppData\...\Bindings folder then.

And I actually have several binding files in there too (just to somewhat dispell the idea that having multiple binding files in the bindings folder causes problems).

There's always custom.binds (which I don't really use), I have binding files for my thrustmaster Hotas 4 (with and without Joystick Curves), I have another for VR and another for speedbowling (although I haven't used that one for quite some time). I think the key thing (probably) is to not have multiple .binds file with the same Presetname in that folder (i.e. if you make a simple backup copy of a file then do put that in a sub-directory called "backups" or somesuch).

You can have as many ".binds" files in the directory as you want, just so long as the "Root PresetName" is different. (I have three Horizons and two Oddity binds files in there currently, for different controller setups - I have had more. ;) )

HCS voicepacks are the way to go with Voice attack

HCS voicepacks are the way to go with Voice attack

They have a sale on at the moment too but MORE IMPORTANTLY - the voicepacks can be used in Elite and that SC thing at the moment but shortly (likely in around 6-8 weeks) future purchases will only be licensed for one or the other, so if you consider maybe using SC as well as Elite you need to purchase before the change.

I keep 2 binding s folders on spare drive one for a desk setup(hotas&peds) and one for my couch setup x box controller an chatppad
in saying that aint flown a desk in over a year now
so I just "plug" whatever folder back in and restart to switch

Question how custom binds for JS work in Conjunction with voice attack?
I custom bind to my Logitech pro JS profile .. but if I use voice attack and for e.g. Take her out No1 it will talk back to me as it does but when it goes to activate the commands .. nothing happens which is because I presume the custom profiles on The JS does not correspond to the binds in HCS voice attack and on HCS voice attack you can only choose generic K/board & JS. How do I get around this or am I misunderstanding how this all works together? Someone show me the light pleeeease.
