it is only true in ~95% of all cases in my experience. you get some npc's with an archetype opening fire not matter whether you have cargo or not. very rarely, but happened again yesterday to me.

Eeek! Well, thanks for the info... it's good to have a reality-check. My newish explorer is a lightweight AspEx but it is fitted with point defence and chaff. Hopefully it will be capable of outrunning the kind of NPC I'm likely to come up against (not currently close to Elite in any category). I would have no interest in getting into combat with a mass of exploration data on board.
