Here is my FPS-Style keyboard layout for Elite!

Hi guys,

Earlier this week I posted a controversial video stating that in my opinion, keyboard + mouse is a better control system than a joystick for Elite: Dangerous.

It's OK to disagree, everything is up for discussion.

Here is the video:

Anyhow, I'm not just posting this to advertise my video, I also created an Elite themed Photoshop PSD file that allows you to showcase your keyboard layout, so I want to post mine and also provide the PSD incase you would like to show off your own layout!

Here is my layout:

And here is the PSD file, hosted on a free file sharing website:

Kind regards,

Thank you very much good sir. Since i started to play ED i bought a joystick and now i ordered a throttle, but always i missed the fps-style controls. Time to relearn to play ED again. My only regret is i cannot rep you more than one time for this post.

Thank you so much :)

I use a HOTAS myself, and I freely admit that it's not as precise as my kb+mouse controls are, but it IS far more immersive, and as someone who plans on getting the Oculus Rift when it finally releases next year, that HOTAS and Voice Attack(haven't gotten that yet, can't decide on a voice pack) will be all I need to play Elite while using the Rift.

I still use kb+mouse with my HOTAS, but I'm trying to JUST use the HOTAS so I can get as good with it as possible. I will probably never been able to boost through the mailslot and stop on Pad 5 in my Clipper like I can with my kb+mouse, but that's ok, it really IS more fun using the HOTAS. You can see your avatar's hands move the throttle and joystick as you move them yourself with the Rift or using freelook, and THAT is rather cool.

I didn't change the default controls much, set FA On/Off to toggle, set thruster up/down to T/F, thruster left/right to W/R and thruster fore/aft to my mouse 4/5 buttons, otherwise all default as they work fine for me. Still have them all set that way with the HOTAS as well, just in case ;)

Hey, thanks for this comment. I just wanted to let you know that I have the Oculus DK2 and I did an extended video on my experience with it in Elite (using keyboard + mouse), take a look if you like:

Thanks for your video / post as I am also a fellow FPS gamer.

Been struggling for a while using the KB/Mouse combo so I appreciate your ideas - will remap the keys and try this tomorrow.

Have some rep good sir.
