Modes Hey, anybody remember when we were asking for an official PvE mode?

This DW2 drama blow-up is exactly why.

Just look at how many highly-populated threads are ongoing about the topic right now.

Dear Frontier: as I see things, this is no longer a question of "if" a PvE mode is necessary. The question is "when", and the time has been "now" for well over a year at the very latest.

Viewing this debacle is adding to my growing list of reasons to not be playing the game.

I always wanted and still want one. I like community, I dislike PvP. Well, actually I don't mind PvP at all as long as I am not involved. What I actually dislike is jerks if I am not able to ignore them.
The whole trouble with PvE modes is, that it would become pretty silly when it comes to ramming and the like. Sure, you can disable player vs player interdiction and render weapons useless when used on other players, but what about ramming? No colision? Nah.
Best solution for me would be to have a player destroyed ship respawn in the system it has been destroyed in the exact same condition it has been destroyed in and with cargo intact. For free.
Also sounds pretty dull, right?

Thing is, I'd prefer these gamey and stupid solutions to having to deal with Kindergarten jerks. I'd even say that it's more immersive to have no collision and player ships shooting rainbows at each other than having murder hobos hanging around POIs that shoot other ships for no reason.

Same as Valorin; I like consensual PvP; that means things like CQC. I love CQC and would play it daily if I could queue up in-game, especially if it granted rewards that were available for collection at a station or something (CQC being a type of telepresence video game inside the Elite world).

But PvE-Open is a must have.

Lol. DW2 drama is because cmdrs don't know how to select Pg mode, so why do you think they'd be any more successful in selecting a pve mode?

Because the main menu would have "PvP - Open" and "PvE - Open" instead of just "Open." Most players know the difference, and if they don't - it wouldn't be hard to put in a tooltip when the player puts the cursor over the button. :)

Nevermind, didn't had my coffee yet. Sorry.

I can't pretend to know about the game's software architecture, but I imagine that a PvE mode would require a different set of rules to be developed but more importantly, maintained.

Right now, there is absolutely no difference in the game's rules when you select either Open, Solo or Private Group. Ships fly the same, they collide the same, weapons do the same damage and RNGineered ships require the exact same mods to be able to permaboost. The selection only affects the servers you connect to and matchmaking. So this would need to change, so that the selection of either Open/Solo/Private Group or PvE Mode would essentially run a different game.

Considering that FDEV have not been able (or at least willing) to figure out the elegant solution to the problem - to implement some smart C&P to truly punish those that openly seek out punishment gameplay - extreme repeat offenders, I doubt it that they will ever consider a change so significant as a hardcoded PvE mode. They can't even deliver a simple matchmaking ruleset for something like Ironman.

No, what they will do is what they have always done: bury their head in the sand and wait for this shstorm to pass.

Thing is, though, there's a whole lot of space to go around. For that reason I think no-damage collisions would be acceptable. There could be 'ways around' this, sure, but it's hard to not notice someone actively trying to ram you repeatedly whilst you're in an area that being rammed around might lead to any harm.

Sure, splitting up the player base further in a galaxy where you hardly ever see another player anyway sounds like a great idea.

If this ever happens, they should at least remove solo and private group and offer only Open PVE and Open PVP.

I think most private groups would close down should they have Open-PvE; there would be no need for it to exist. Some might still go on for specific things; eg: a role-play only PG.

Still out on dw2 myself - no issues at all. Well, apart from all the cmdrs in chat still saying they don't know what mode they're in...

What about those CMDRs who get pushed by the servers into Open against their wishes, when trying to instance up with each other? Besides, all the more reason there should be a big obvious PvE mode button next to the other options, innit?

Glad you're having fun with no issues, many would like to be in that same boat.

This gets my vote. The only options should be Open-PvE (where one Cmdr can't damage another Cmdrs ship) & Open-PvP (where anything goes).

Personally, I'd only play Open-PvE.
