High Grade Emissions - what am I doing wrong?

So I’m going through a few engineering upgrades, for which I need proto radiolic alloys and proto light alloys.

According to various sources, I will find these at High Grade Emissions in Boom Anarchy systems.

Well, I’ve been at it two hours, and no HGEs to be found at all! I’ve tried a couple of different systems, searched with the FSS, logged out and in, hung around... nothing.

No HGEs anywhere!

What am I doing wrong?!

Hi cmdr, it can be very difficult to find HGEs with specific mats, but if you set your galaxy map filter to very high population systems and just jump around a few you should find HGEs but may have to trade them across via a mat trader, but PRAs and PLAs are normally common.

Try to find the biggest place you can. It might be up to 200ly or more, so scoop at the ready!

By big, I mean billions of population. Then the quicker way to check the system as opposed to using the fss, is to use the nav beacon.

Target it and drop like a station. Then find the beacon itself, target it, and give it about ten seconds iirc.

Re-enter supercruise, and all the USS will have resolved into the respective ones. I forgot to mention that it may be necessary to honk the system first too.

Can't guarantee it, as it's still a crap shoot, but this will raise the chance a lot.

The fall-back method is to locate any HGS and scoop up what is there, regardless of the type. Then go to the trader and and get what you need.

I know the trade ratio sucks and GRIND, but that's what FD had in mind to "lengthen" play so you could "enjoy" the game that much more.

One of the reasons I don't engineer and only have 6 ships is the search for mats. I still grab the 4 and 5 grade at signals when I see one as a result of system scans and from destroyed ships. I trade them around when I fill up a particular type.

Good luck!

If you get into the habit of always scanning ships while in supercruise, you randomly get various data materials, and at the very least a trader will trade lots of them for something better. The point is that if you do this all the time, it builds up without you really thinking about it.

Same with docking, as you're approaching a station, scan the ships around it (good use for a docking computer, you can scan while it does the flying, although obviously only what's ahead of you)

Additionally, if you are prepared to spend a minute of two, when you leave a station, go out in a straight line, stop, turn around, and scan around the station.

What you are doing wrong, is seeking one or two specific items, instead of finding things as you play, and upgrading as you go. That's how the game was designed.

Now, if that gels with you, or if you like that design is a different topic, but... there it is.

I filter galmap and jump from system to system, ignoring population and nav beacon. I FSS quickly, and within 3 hours filled most my target bins(hg alloys, imp sh, radiolic, heat, core dyn etc). Sometimes it took 30mins to find HGE, once it took 1 hour. Then broker and rinse repeat.
All my bins are maxxed now.

I posted about this very subject yesterday, about how I play the game, when other people were talking about making credits.

We share the same view.

Feel free to click this link to read my comments:-

I get the concept, I buy in to it, and I’ve been doing this happily since 2014.

I just wanted to specifically find these mats so I could finish off an upgrade, and I don’t get why the HGEs aren’t spawning...

Thanks for your Input anyway

If you just need a few, probly be better to just trade up at an exorbitant rate.

If you just PEW in a haz res, or even compromised nav beacon for a bit, scooping up all the goodies, even the little stuff, then go to a trader, you'll gain the few high level ones you need.

Yes I am considering it.
I feel like I’m getting ripped off though!

I’d rather spend a couple of hours hunting them down than trade 6 to 1 from other very rare mats.

What? Who’s stubborn??!!!

How dare you...

Get a ship to go bounty hunting. Do the bounty hunting missions for dangerous and Elite level. Those always drop high grade materials, usually one or two high grade per mission. and the trade missions where they send people after you
