Hooray for new ship. \o/

Maybe the "new functionality" is a drive and hull upgrade
I don't think the quotation marks around "new functionality" are justified, since it's not a quote.

Afaik they were talking about the Mk2 being "functionally different" to the Mk1 version, which is not the same thing.

It can be functionally different without the existence of any kind of new functionality.

It doesn’t look like a one man cockpit to me, I can pretty clearly see the silhouette of two pilot chairs in the front, side by side. One of them looks like it has a pilot in it too, on the left side like the current Python.

On the picture posted in the opening post? I can't see absolutely anything through that canopy. Not even when I zoom it in to fill the entire screen.

I'm not against new ships / variants, I just find myself asking why.

For example, there are those that have asked why should we have ship interiors. Their point is that there would be no (obvious) gameplay with ship interiors. My answer is that it would add to the immersion. It would give a proper sense of going from A to B. It would feel more like your ship, you own that ship, than what we have currently.

For the new ship variants, I would like to know what this "functionally different" is. I would like to know more.

Do we get a dropship module for it? To airdrop commanders over on foot war zones? That would be cool.... Like the one in the vultures at on foot CZ.

Though looking at hard point placement there, looks like 5 top surface mounts visible.

Very nice piece of design though.

Ok, not holding my breath on thicker atmospheres as that would be new DLC huge.

Not 100% sure I agree with that. The big work, new planetary tech, the volumetric atmospherics, that was all done for Odyssey and should in theory just be an extension to move to thicker atmospheres, the big DLC would have to be new types of life, mobile and dangerous. I could see them giving us thicker atmospheres on frozen bodies for instance, snow, clouds etc, even methane rain, but entirely skip the new life forms due to the intense cold not being a viable ecosystem, and that shouldn't be a huge new DLC. Now ELW's, yes that would be a huge new DLC (y)

Looks like two pilot chairs and a pilot in the port side position to me:

Not necessarily, if we leave Earth-likes out from the equation. All that would be needed for barren thick-atmosphered planets or gas-giant skimming would be clouds, precipitation, wind (things MS flight sim has done for decades so not exactly ground-breaking) and tweaking of ship flight models so they would handle differently in thick atmospheres.
That said Gutamaya, Saud Kruger and Zorgon Peterson look atmosphere capable.
Saud Kruger—not terrible, but those wings are way too small to generate any appreciable lift. And the, ahem, cigar-shaped hulls are no good for lift, either. At least the hull shape is reasonably low drag (some greebles though) and the center of pressure is behind the center of gravity. In short, they only need to fight gravity, not drag or instabilities.

Gutamaya—they look sleek, but they're bricks. The many greebles and weird shapes would generate a lot of drag and it looks like the center of gravity is way back.

Zorgon-Peterson—as I said, Adder and FDL are fine. Hauler is a brick. Mamba has low drag, high lift body but these two flat prongs in front of it would move the center of pressure way forward causing severe pitch instability.

Lakon—Asps would be guite good, the body would generate decent lift. The rest are bricks.

Core Dynamics—all bricks, but not the worst bricks. Corvette hull would have pretty good lift hampered by high drag of all the greebles. FAS/Dropship/Gunship would need to fight the gravity and drag, but the wings would provide decent maneuverability.

DeLacy—Anaconda and to a lesser extent Python are bricks, the rest are pretty good lifting bodies, especially Sidey, Cobra and the Kraits.

The Eagles—somewhere between bricks and lawn darts.

To be clear, I think the cockpit has been moved. The crossed-out portion is the old cockpit, that looks like it's tarp-covered. The thing I circled in yellow seems to be the new canopy.

And to be really clear, that isn't there in the screenshot on the first post of this thread, you would need to look further to see the screenshot with that feature in.

The screenshot in the first post shows a transparent canopy with two seats, just like the current setup.

This is just my picture, my wish to make a separate cockpit for the co-pilot, who can fire from there from the turret gun, together with the crew commander, who controls the directional guns. The second crew member there will have a better overview and will be able, for example, to direct the landing of the SRV, or paratroopers. This picture is just my photo montage, my wishes. There are also painted portholes in the corridor to the second cabin. Sorry for my English...
