Horizons and Base Game 4.0 first impressions

New planet tech in Horizons 4.0...

... but not in base game mode:

No engineers in the base game...

... but engineered modules keep their stats, and Guardian modules remain visible and usable. In Horizons 4.0, Odyssey settlements have no human NPCs, but skimmers and NPC ships are still present. Maintenance services, mission boards, and commodity markets are accessible from the ship as usual. The absence of human NPCs appears to have no impact on performance.

Unlike Horizons 3.8, EDH4 supports combat, trade, exploration and CQC ranks above Elite, but of course no mercenary and exobiology ranks. You can't buy Artemis, Maverick, and Dominator suits in EDH4 or in the base game, but if you're already wearing one of those, you can still edit its cosmetics. Your Holo-Me can't be edited in base game mode but remains visible instead of reverting to the default black flight suit/opaque helmet outfit.

Hangar doors are sealed shut.

For a more detailed guide on how to make this all work, see here. Thanks to @DrinkyBird for pointing us in the right direction. Now all we need to do is convince Frontier to give us those launch options by default. ;)

Edit: Link updated.

Edit #2: Min-ED-Launcher was just updated to allow launching EDH4 from an Odyssey account. Easier than the old method.

As I said in the other thread, I would be wary of trying this. The launcher fetches a list of authorized products for the logged in account, and if you own Odyssey it does not receive the Horizons 4.0 entry. You are effectively running a product you are not authorized to, the same as if a Horizons owner was forcing the 4.0 client to run without the SeasonTwo argument...

What are they going to do, ban me...for spending too much money on their game?

The sheer comedic value of such an eventuality would be more than worth any potential hassle.

Is it possible to do the opposite, to trick Horizons 4.0 into thinking it is Odyssey? Don't worry, I have no intentions of doing this - I can't even be bothered to download the free version of 4.0, LOL. I'm just curious.

(Please don't ban me mods if this is a bad post, just delete it instead. Thanks!)

I think you'd need to own a copy of Odyssey on the account to be safe trying that (otherwise it's software piracy).

I haven't had Horizons installed since I rebuilt my PC a few months ago, I installed it last night to have a look. I wasn't able to make the game load in different versions (server authentication error, just me not being bright enough to figure it out yet) but I was able to see the 'SeasonOne' appended to the argument when I launch the base game (not Horizons).

By the way...
That Frontier's main interest is in making money is a given. How best to go about that is less certain.

Personally, putting arbitrary barriers on who I can instance with, with my fully upgraded account, is not going to encourage me, or those I play with, to give Frontier more money.

Less subjectively, attempting to force me to install and use the old client, that they ostensibly would like to get rid of at some point, is also contradictory. This situation is an exemplar of something that (officially) cannot be done because I have Odyssey. I am not sure how this is an incentive for others to buy Odyssey.
This is a perfect summary of the situation, @Morbad. I would have said so in the other thread, but I lost the privilege to do so.

I legally purchased these products:

And not just once but twice, for myself. So I'm pretty sure I'm legally authorized to play Horizons 4.0, if that's what I want to do. Or did the term "season pass" suddenly lose its meaning?
You didn't purchase 4.0.

Fdev have given some others access to 4.0, as they are entitled to do. This does not in any way whatsoever give you the right to have 4.0.

Because none of us have purchased 4.0.

I sell a product.

Some of my customers I give other products or freebies. Some I don't.

The ones who don't get anything in addition to what they purchased have no right to demand the freebies.

I live in the place the folk who live in the 'middle of nowhere' call 'the back of beyond'....so it took me 17 hours to download the update !!! (Full Fibre BB don;t exist here, just old skool copper wire...grrrrrrrrr!), however, it - H 4.0 - works okay and things appeared to be working fine...right up to exiting the game....Esc not working (maybe not re-set in menus?), then it crashed. I'll stick at it though, graphics seemed okay, didn;t have to change anything there. Any-1 else had problems exiting? If so, how did you fix it? C Ya.

They have given you 3.8. The move to 4.0 was supposed to happen for everybody as an upgrade of the code base. Instead of forcing everybody to 4.0, they allowed you to stay on the now obsolete 3.8. This was feasible as they have to maintain 3.8 anyway for the console commanders. The courtesy is 3.8, not 4.0.

interesting way of looking at it, has some merit.

If it comes with strings attached, it's not a freebie. In this case, access to Horizons 4.0 is clearly tied to ownership of the base game. Horizons 4.0 isn't some time-limited demo available to everyone. It's a feature-complete replacement for Horizons 3.8, available to those who already own Horizons 3.8. And that would include me.

Now you are arguing that although I do own the base game, I lost the right to Horizons 4.0 by purchasing Odyssey. However, this was not part of the contract of the Odyssey purchase.

On the contrary, Frontier promised that Odyssey owners would be able to play with Horizons owners, in a new client with "galaxy-wide graphical improvements and updated planetary tech". This was supposed to happen some time after the launch of Odyssey on consoles. See here. Apparently that client is now available, and I already received it when I purchased Odyssey. So I intend to use it.

You seem to believe that the cancellation of Odyssey on consoles somehow means that Frontier's promises to Odyssey licensees are now void and no longer need to be fulfilled. "Yes, we promised a deadline for delivery, but we decided to cancel the deadline, so we need not deliver at all. But thanks for your money!"

It should be obvious to anyone with a modicum of education that this is not how contracts work. The only thing that would convince me to give up Horizons 4.0 is a full refund on Odyssey. But we both know that's never going to happen. As someone who pre-ordered Odyssey and even purchased some Arx, I am in fact one of those loyal customers Frontier cannot afford to lose. I'm quite optimistic that Frontier is aware of this, and that there will soon be a Horizons 4.0 entry in everyone's launcher.

Quite frankly, Frontier should worry more about those who looked at Horizons 4.0 and decided that they don't want it.

You bought odyssey. You got odyssey. If you are arguing they have some legal requirement to ALSO do other things that were originally in their plans, eg consoles, merging of the players in the new engine, then I guess you can speak to your lawyer.

Good luck with that.

You purchased a piece of software, you got it.

If you want to play in Odyssey (the product you purchased) with friends, there's a simple solution. For your friends.

I now have the product that was promised to me. It took a while, but now it's right here on my hard disk. I already uninstalled client 3.8, because I don't need it any more. Why would I want to speak to my lawyer?

@thistle, I really don't know what your problem is. Do you have a horse in this race? Is anything being taken away from you, or from anyone else for that matter? Do you think my occasional presence in Horizons 4.0 might dissuade someone from buying Odyssey? Your confidence in that product appears to be very fragile.
