Horizons and Base Game 4.0 first impressions

I saw some interesting reading around here. My case is kind of different I think. I only own Horizons for now, and was tempted to get Odyssey after testing Horizons 4.0. It's cheap, and my computer seems to handle it correctly on 4K resolution ULTRA settings. Note I didn't test VR yet, I guess I should stick to 3.8 for it. I'm curious to continue playing with this new engine, to discover all enhancements (or mistakes) they made. This seems to be the future of ED.

But, after reading all those arguments in this thread, I will NOT buy Odyssey, even at this cheap price currently, because I know now I will lose access to Horizon 4.0, and I'm scared my PC will not survive to the Odyssey requirements.
So I prefer to keep access to Horizons 3.8 for VR, and Horizons 4.0 for the "nice" enhanced pancake mode and future story plots.
Just my 2cc.

If you own Odyssey & only do the same stuff in that that you have already seen in Horizons 4.0 you will see the same performance so you shouldn't have any regrets.

The exception to this may be at ground settlements where the simple presence of on-foot NPCs may degrade performance.

Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey requirements are the same. So if you can play 4k Ultra in Horizons 4.0, you can also do it in Odyssey

And no matter what you chose, 3.8 will still be here for the ultimate VR experience (although there are plenty of cmdrs that are using VR in Odyssey)

Edit: Ninjas everywhere 😂

I have no idea as I'm a predominately solo player and bought in the Horizon era.
I guess I'll just launch base game 4.0 and look for Horizons 4.0 players in open mode. If I can share instances with those, there's no technical reason for excluding Odyssey players in space.

I tried 4.0 today. It looks worse than 3.8 on my system, and frankly, there are too many UI changes to relearn (especially the new map, what's down with all that??..). So shelving the game till i miss flying spacehips again, probably in a few months from now.

That's irrelevant to the question of how difficult it is to implement shared instances in space while preventing them on planets.

see below

3.8 Horizons instances with vanilla Elite, they're both ED Beyond.

They're also both Pegi7

And with all the functionalities they would need to modify (telepresence and the possibility of a SRV to "fly" between two planets - a possibility that FD didnt consider until the Proteus Wave part of the story), i find it understandable they prefer to disallow instances at client level - at least the possibility of instancing in space is not completely excluded
Not to mention that a lot of smart nerds will try to circumvent the restrictions - just because...

Rate them all the same and tell the kids to come back when they grow up

Give them a chance to learn how to read before it's too late

Do you not like 3.8, or are you just bored with the old content? I fall in the latter group, but this week's CG has piqued my interest again. I wonder how many other 3.8 players I'll meet at the CG - am I the only one left?

I've seen more players in 3.8 in the last few days than I did in many months of playing in EDO

How ironic would that be if FD sees that everyone has gone back to 3.8 - and after the time and expense they've got invested in EDO/4.0

Wife says, "Want to watch Downton Abbey?" to which I reply, "No thanks, I've got some paperwork to take care of."

Time to fire up 3.8 for some relaxation

I'm basically a rep hunter trader explorer that uses mostly Cutter, Python, and passenger build Anaconda to do missions to build up reputation everywhere I go.

I'm just about allied with every faction within 100LY of my home system so that wherever I fly I have tons of high paying options on the board and the destination are likely to just put me into another allied system. If I see a good trade run on Inara I'll spend a few days stacking credits. If I get bored, I'll hop in a combat outfitted ship and do some combat in a system far away from my home base as when you kill pilots from a faction your allied with it can bring your rep down - so I don't kill around my home turf.

Once or twice a year I'll do an exploration trip just to remember how much I'd rather be back at home base.

Building and testing new ship configurations and doing some engineering pretty much rounds out what I enjoy in ED. Contemplating doing another Power Pray stint with the blue haired lady to add some prismatics to the inventory.

All that is so much easier to do in 3.8

Approach to stations in SC works as it should - the hologram is aligned properly to the docking port.
The thrusters and the DC work properly
The Galaxy map is faster
I can change ship without having to take a nap while waiting to make the swap

I pray they leave 3.8 as it is - goodness only knows what would happen if the decided to "fix" it.

Client 4.0 can share instances between base game and Horizons mode. Excluding Odyssey mode is a deliberate decision, not a technical necessity. All they need to do is separate players when entering exclusion zones of landfall planets. Base game players hit a wall, EDH and EDO players enter separate planetary instances. Telepresence crew gets disconnected if not in the same mode. Problem solved.

Alternatively they could make full crossplay unlockable through a virtual DLC that has the same PEGI rating as Odyssey. For a long time the Horizons DLC was not a download but a license key to unlock things in the client.

But Frontier doesn't want to do any of this.

I have mixed feelings about this, because they should have fixed it before switching it to maintenance mode. I'm talking about the major bugs, glitches, half-baked features, and just bad design paradigms (like the way fleet carriers are displayed in the system map).

On the other hand, assuming they don't touch it ever again, at least I know what I've got and can count on it being what it is. I've learned how to work around many of the annoyances, and I basically just avoid all the half-baked and broken content. That mean's "my" Elite is a small subset of the overall package, but it's a pretty darn good subset - good enough to keep bringing me back when the mood strikes.

No, I think it's much more likely that Frontier just pulls the plug on 3.8 than it is for them to go back and "fix" it. I'm really not sure what I'll do when that day comes. You?

Definitely one they will do as soon as more people are playing 4.0 its not a case of if more of a when

I agree. The stickler is that Frontier continues to sell Horizons as 3.8 with its minimum requirements and reviews. If someone buys this version of the game today, only to have it shut down next week and be told "You must upgrade to 4.0", and 4.0 doesn't run well or otherwise disappoints that player (of course there will be more than one), that'll be a pretty big PR nightmare for Frontier.

I'll be very interested to follow how they handle this when the day comes. I'm having a hard time envisioning anything that won't be messy. I suppose they could just stop selling 3.8 now, switching it to 4.0 with fresh requirements and a blank review slate, then give everyone on 3.8 a six month or one year warning before shutting it down. That would prevent the "I just bought 3.8 yesterday!!" backlash at least.
