Horizons key bindings destroyed by Odyssey updates...is there some file to save key bindings?

It seems that every time there's an update to Odyssey my custom key bindings in Horizons are lost. Odyssey planet surfaces have been such a disappointment to me that I still just use Horizons for any sort of SRV activity. Is there a file for key bindings that can be copied and used to restore my key bindings after updates?

Have you considered backing them up, via the elusive "right click & press save" method? It's an old archaic technique, but it might solve their destruction.

Then if you switch between edo and edh, I believe there is more magic available - in the controls menu, I have heard rumours that you can choose "custom" as Facty suggested above.

This is very dubious witchcraft though, and may need some sacrificial offerings to perfect. It should solve any worries about destruction though.

Perhaps you have done this already, but since it's not been mentioned, I think it's worth saying this anyway: have you checked in the Bindings folder?

C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

if you have a custom set of bindings, ED saves it as Custom.3.0.binds for Horizons, and Custom.4.0.binds for Odyseey, and on top of it it creates periodic backups.

Perhaps they're still there but you can't see them in game?

Anyway, that's the folder you need to backup :)

I keep Horizons and Odyssey backups of the Bindings folder and everything in it. I also have a couple of batch-files on my desktop. Each goes to my Bindings folder, deletes all files, and then copies from the appropriate backup.

Ofc, why didnt I think of defending myself from the product I purchased! Silly me ;)

Srsly though this is pretty unexpected, especially with a game so competent they incorporate what almost every control input type that exists? VR PC Xbox Playstation etc.

Pretty weird to drop the ball so hard on your own foot literally ON the finish line!

I don't disagree mate. I think some of us have just gotten jaded over time with things like this, as we've been hoping for fixes for a very long time!

The "CUSTOM " .binds are not safe, they will be wiped by many updates as they are part of the game files. Best to rename them to something not in game so they are less likely to get destroyed by updates. Mine are now GizmosCustomEDH & GizmosCustomEDO and have survived a couple of updates, only time they went missing was when a controller died and the game would no longer load the .binds with missing hardware.

That thread by Strontium Dog used to be stickied. If you rename the .bind file and follow the rest of the instructions in the above thread, you should be fine. All that has changed is the bind file name under EDO.

I have always previously saved the settings of the control keys that I created myself. And after the fifth update, they disappeared into the Horizons.
I tried to restore them from previously saved files by overwriting them from the backup to the Bindings folder. But it doesn't work now. The settings are not restored.
I had to create them again.

I use the same bindings for EDO & EDH. I did make a backup before, and have it saved and renamed as its own set.

Tried saving and copying the binds folder when my binds disappeared... but it doesn't recognize the file. When I go into the game, there's no option for custom binds.

EDH - the startpreset file can only contain one entry for Custom to load the binds file properly otherwise it reverts to kybd/mouse

EDO - the startpreset needs Custom entered on 4 lines

i.e

Custom
Custom
Custom
Custom

If you forget - just close and edit the startpreset as outlined above.

If you don't want to edit the config file yourself as above, just set one control on each of the menus, so it marks them as custom. Exit out, then rename your bind file. At least that's how I do it...

Well, I've found switching between EDO and EDH messes with the bindings quite effectively. Whether from EDH to EDO or vice-versa, I have to redo the configuration each time.

Not sure if this is a bug or by design.

As I currently understand it EDH uses "Custom.3.0" binds file and to work as intended the StartPreset file must only have one entry that says Custom on the first line.

EDO uses the "Custom.4.0" file and to work properly must have the word Custom on 4 separate lines in the StartPreset file.

YMMV

I haven't tested in a while in EDO, but you might be able to load EDO with the EDH preset and then edit the options in EDO to load Custom into the settings that aren't yet set properly, but doing that should then re-write the StartPrest file with 4 entries so that if you then go back into EDH your binds load will fail until you remove the extra 3 lines that are not needed to load EDH.

I have a shortcut on my desktop to the StartPreset file and just do the edit before switching between EDH/EDO

It works - not elegant - but it works

HTH

EDIT: You can also just pin the binds directory to "Quick access" in the file explorer to make it easier to go to the Bindings directory.

I can't recall ever having my keybinds lost at an update, though have heard others who have had issues.

Just to be sure I did create a folder when I started using a gamepad.

Since Odyssey dropped, I've copied into it multiple times, as I wrestled with the best keybinds to use with Odyssey.
