Horizons / Odyssey Compatibility

For these interested for play Odyssey via GeforceNow: it's planned to have it there, but not right on start, date of release on GFN is TBD. I got this reply from nVidia and also Frontier support.

My main concern is performance.

If performance remains at Odyssey Alpha levels and the improvements are implemented in Horizons, this will make Horizons a real pain to play when near stations and on planets. Not "literally unplayable" but enough to probably put me off playing until i can get a better graphics card or performance improvements are made.

If Horizons retains good performance while Odyssey has bad, then i can live with that for some time.

If the performance improvements do come to Odyssey/Horizons, then cool.

Anyone who isn't getting odyssey probably isn't that much into the game anyway.
I rather resent that statement.

I've clocked up over 8,000 hours in EDH so I don't consider that as "isn't that much into the game anyway".

I'm not buying EDO because it's not offering any exploration content other than point a widget at a vegetable and press a button. When that situation changes, I'll be sure to reconsider my decision.

Wait, so I want to make sure I have read this correctly...

1) People who are on the Horizons client and the Odyssey client will not instance with one another in any fashion (including in non-Odyssey content, like flying in supercruise).
2) We will not be able to instance with one another until the console launch later this year (if that is even going to launch on time).

If these two points are the case, then you guys at Frontier have reached levels of incompetence that I didn't even know was possible. You realize the implications this will have in an activity such as Powerplay, where we will have to have commanders in both clients to potentially stop enemy CMDRs, who are in open, from doing things that negatively effect the power?
This is not much different from what we have to deal with today, Cmdrs who do not do BGS or PowerPlay in Open. Basically it is just another form of PG.

IIRC, what you are saying is that Horizons that I load up and play on May 20th will be identical to the Horizons I play today. This Fall, however, when consoles get Odyssey, then certain graphical updates will be rolled back into Horizons on PC. Is this correct?

If this is true, then I'm totally fine with that. In fact, I prefer it this way. There are some changes Odyssey brings (like UI and potential performance hits) that I don't want forced on me as a Horizons owner, and I'm hoping these things will be fixed come Fall.

The one thing I'm having trouble wrapping my head around is the differences in planetary outposts between Horizons and Odyssey. As I picture it, Odyssey will literally be a parallel universe to Horizons, with not only new and different outposts, but the same outposts (like engineering bases) being of different design in order to fit into the different procgen terrain. It feels like FDev will need to maintain two separate stellar forges for this to work..

We have ourselves a Kelvin timeline... At least until the Great Reunification in the Autumn.

Btw, that a very 'distracting' Tennant gif you posted there.

When do you plan to update Odyssey with ability to use VR do you have a set date planned?
Before they can do that they have to bring down the min spec to horizons level, both to be able to upgrade horizons accounts and to be able to make it run on ps4/xbone.
If they manage that, they can then begin to think about foot VR

Apologies if this has been asked before but the thread being as it is now, its difficult to sift trhough the info amidst the rage.

Since Horizon and Odyssey players will have different planetary techs, how will this affect the location of planetary ports?
Shrug... Same place, different terrain.

Sadly the rage and bed wetting will drown out a lot of reasonable questions and there is still quite a few unanswered questions Frontier should address before they abandon this thread.

You should tag Bruce G in the hope that he sees your question.
I'll have you know that I have a mattress protector on my bed so that I can wet the bed with impunity! Us bed wetters have rights you know! Why hinder our wetting when we plainly enjoy it so much! So nice and warm! 🥴
