I have come to the realization that new games, like Elite and Star Citizen, are trying to push a new kind of marketing on us.

Im sure FD is looking over at ol' Chris Roberts and seeing; "Look at what he's doing. He is selling 30-1500$ ships, and his player base is buying them as quick as they throw ships at them. And, They are not even "expansions" to an "existing" game. If SC can get their players to pay that much for just some pixel art. Why cant WE get them to buy a, slightly over priced, expansion ever so often for content?"

But, at the same time, SC doesn't "force" you to buy a 300$ ship just to play all the content either. Yes, they will have some payed DLC, mostly for their SP Squadron 42. Because landing on a planet, walking around your ship, and walking around on planets, all the stuff ED is trying to charge you for, is "free" CONTENT! Plus, 90% of the planets, landing zones, stations, "content" is actually hand made. Not some Pro-Gen, no effort, millions of copy and pasted clutter you cant do anything with..THEN you have to pay extra for it when they do put it in..

Look...@FD...If you "need" extra funds for "development", (which I still find hard to swallow when most of the content will be Pro-Gen. It would be different if you were building every planet, station, etc. by hand, and had to pay for a couple hundred artists to do it)Then lower the cost of these "expansions", throw in more "candy" in the store! Your store can't live on skins alone. (especially when you don't "see" the skin much.((really need to be able to walk around..and shouldn't be charged for an "expansion" to do that. That should have been "core" game mech. which is included))) TL;DR Treat your players as you would want to be treated, and our wallets may end up having the uncontrollable urge to open up more!

I payed 40€ for the full game, with the discount i save 3€ wow...

It is not the same because the guild wars 2 addon is something finished. Horizon is a series of content patches for planetary landing that are arriving over time (maybe).

So you purchased the game at a discount and you are complaining that the expansion will not also be released at a even more discounted price? LOL do you even read your own posts? So if someone purchases a game on sale for $5 (normal 30), they can complain that the expansion is more than $5 because that is what they payed for the game? hahahaha.

So wait for Horizon to be finished and then purchase it. No one is stopping you from doing that. Its a sad day when people complain about having purchasing options.

Well, based on the results of the poll on this page, about 60% of people here think the expansion price is fair. Another 20% think it's too expensive but will buy it on sale. The poll is missing an option for "I think Horizons is a little expensive, but not so unfair that I won't buy it." So, some of that latter 20% might fall into that category. But anyway, you have 60% fully satisfied, another 20% who are somewhat satisfied but not planning to throw up their hands and leave, or skip the expansion. That leaves you with 20% who are entirely dissatisfied. That's 20% on an internet forum - a medium not renowned for its positivity.

I wouldn't say that's "so much negativity." Besides, a quick Google search turns up a whopping zero articles describing the huge backlash against FD for their Horizons expansion.

So you read the poll as above? The poll is split into the top three answers which say its to expensive and the bottom three which say its not. That means 40% say it is to expensive and 60% say its not. Thats a quite a few then that think its to expensive then.

Well, imagine the price for complete game after five years, over $200. Not so many people will be willing to pay that and some reduced price will be inevitable. And we will be at the same state as is now. ;)

Honestly, this probably would have gone a lot smoother if they had two versions: the expansion by itself for people who already have the game, and the bundle for people who don't. They're not selling physical copies, so it's not like they'd have to do two runs of DVDs.

For one thing, it's kind of how expansions usually work. Heck even Microsoft does this when they release a new version of Windows. People who don't have Windows pay full price to get it, people who already have Windows pay around half price to upgrade (the current cycle's free upgrades aside).

Technically they would have an even stronger excuse to make both groups pay full price because a new Windows version isn't an expansion, it's an entirely new OS. But the uproar would easily be ten times what we're seeing here if MS had gone and said "We are no longer doing Windows Upgrades, existing Windows owners must now buy the full Windows 10 installation for $120 plus tax just like new installs. But if you pre-order and enter your product key during checkout, we'll knock $10 off that."

Maybe the Steam Summer Sale will kinda-sorta act as a workaround, but really it just makes good sense to have a lower price point for people who already have the base game.

LOL such , you never, never know what all will be in a pre-order game. You clearly was not following GW2 because there was a lot of information not known before the pre-order started. Simple answer, then don't pre-order. No one is forcing you. If you don't feel like you have the information you need to make a purchase then don't. You are complaining about nothing.

No one is forcing us exceeeeept... it seems that the discount is time limited. True not exactly forcing but not exactly fair either.

What about, "It's a teeny bit bit pricey but i have bought or will buy it anyway"?

Hang on it is only £30 (with discount). That's not that much.

Your google is weak. Theres one there talking about the massive reddit thread. You are not going to find much negativity here(or if you did , it would vanish instantly at the hint of a wanted feature in a upcoming expansion, much like what happened in this forum). For the most part most of those who registered here like the game and care enough to comment on it. but a full 40% who think the price is steep isnt small, even if the poll is quite useless.

Charging full price for an expansion is poo. Plain and simple. The model may have worked for GW but that MMO has much more to offer in terms of actually being a mmo and having much more to do.

New buyers would always get the game for $60, and old players could always "get up to speed" for $30. Thus all players always have an incentive to buy, and feel like they are getting a "deal".

Don't forget, if you buy the game now, you get to play the game from now until release (probe dec 2015, maybe Nov 2015)
.
Then when the update launches, as an existing user you pay £30 for the new "season" whilst a newcomer pays £40.
.
When the next "season" launches, all existing users can pay (lets say) £30 to get it, and newcomers again pay £40.
:
This is pretty much the pricing model for continuing software that has been around for years.

:

If you have windows XP ($199 new) vista costs $99 as an upgrade or $199 new
:
Win7 costs $99 as an upgrade from vista or $199 new, etc etc (I've made up the prices but the principle is the same).

They got greedy. There's definitely no thought of making a well coded finished product. Its a constant cycle of, how much will you give me if I promise you this or that. This game is gonna leave a very sore mark on the gaming scene. Someone else with more morals should have attempted the elite remake, not these business snakes. This is turning into tribes or mechwarrior, perfectly good IPs destroyed by poor development

What is more shocking is that I have spent all day at work with my flies undone.

Not shocking at all, just indicative of how much attention you've been paying to both your pants and Elite: Dangerous' progress.

Development goals keep getting divvied up into smaller sections and strung out, and pricing models get more awkward with each iteration. Now we have everyone forgetting that gameplay mechanics like planetary landing weren't supposed to be expansion content but core gameplay releases, and expansion content was supposed to be story access to gated sections of the galaxy. (200-400 star clusters out in the deep black that require a permit, anyone?)

Too many apologists. Things will never get done at this rate.

Yes, geez!
Why going through all the shady season stuff?
Do they enjoy sh*tstorms (stupid censorship)?

Not only I would say Horizons is too expensive, but then, I'll say again that the game itself is too expensive, and so were the alpha and beta access. And then there's the very idea that you need to buy the base game again.

The pricing has been way too high since the beginningand without a doubt, more people would buy it if it was cheaper. Now the proper balance between the price and additional sales is hard to get, but there's no doubt many people are put off by the price alone, and that lowering it the slightest would have a huge effect on sales.

It's like Frontier didn't bother to check the usual price games go for these days.

At first, could you please stop giving mean or agressive answeres? Thanks.

Again, hope You understand it now. It is a difference if i sell an finished product or if i sell 20% percent of an finished product, and bring the rest later. Guild wars bring you the full package on date yxz. Horizion will come as Version 1.5 and will evolves until it reaches Version 1.9 or whatever they call it when the season is over and all features that are planned are included.

That is a difference the First model is more the traditional and the secound is more like early access like.
