HOTAS Pros, Cons & Recommendations

I quickly checked prices on amazon, price 160$ was for new hotas (stick and throttle), i guess you are refering to price of stick alone. Althought i was buying my hotas for 120$ i think, so i was suprised with new prices.

Yes, my quote was stick alone.

Soooo , my Saitek X52 just died, well, its slowly been losing funcionality, like first the mouse button being completely random and a pain in the , then various, randomness with pov hat switches, mouse wheel etc. software is ruled out because I have plenty of experience with the old saitek software and drivers and consequently logitech.
So I figure it is hardware, I've had it for about 5 years and it has served me well. I dont fancy google/youtube/soldering iron and taking it to bits to see if I can fix it, not my skill set and/or the time to do that.
Soooo ...
I'm thinking of a Thrustmaster T1600 fcs because it's a reasonably priced HOTAS.
I am interested in opinons on this and other HOTAS, as in if I can save money on something cheaper or can I be swayed to up my budget and get something more expensive.
Also, if anyone's experience of switching from a saitek to logitech... have they been improved?

Thank You.

I have the CH products trio (Pro pedals, throttle, fighterstick) -I've been using them for over a decade now - and used them pretty hardcore in Elite dangerous (over 1800 hours). Still going strong. Got the pedals used, other two new. I absolutely love the software suite and makes them adaptable to anything. I do have a workmaster drafting table as a computer desk (lots of space). While the bases are light they don't move unless I want them to. (you generally leverage your input against the base, not the resistnace of the base vs. desk). I could always pop them open and put lead/iron in them if I wanted them heavier though.

I'm sure they are at the pricier side of your plans but wanted to contribute a datapoint on their reliability.

Here is an older Imgur map of my keybindings - the thing I forgot was power distribution. It's slightly different today because of the analysis mode switch but similar layout.

Some great feedback there, absolutley awesome. I am leaning now to putting a bit extra aside and going uptown. I'm not one for fiddling around with stuff and jerry rigging things. It should work out of the box and earn its value.

I think it’s worth the necromancy to update on the status of my t16000m stick. The potentiometer died today, with no amount of fiddling able to resurrect it. This is pretty shameful for the price of these things. I’m replacing it with a contactless hall sensor, but I just wanted to amend my earlier recommendation: It doesn’t matter how comfortable it is, or how much better than my old stick it is in terms of buttons and looks, this is not a product I can recommend. The problems are too common and severe.

I have been using the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X for at least 4 years now and have never had real issue with the combination. I will admit that some of the more frequently used button are getting a bit mushy now but hell for the price and length of time I have used it - I would call that good value for money. The system has enough buttons for me to play comfortably without taking my hands off either the throttle or stick and only use the keyboard for typing something. I do use my mouse for the FSS but that is just personal preference.

All that for a system under AUST$170 and can be used by our console brethren.

Not a HOTAS rig, but this caught my interest in relation to Elite...

Started using my T16000M and its TWC throttle controller since Nov 2019, within 6 months the potentiometer in the T16000M also started to act weird, I took it apart, filed the brackets around the potentiometer and repositioned it back, the joystick worked well for a couple of months and then acting up a again. Must have disassembled and repositioned that potentiometer four times now and just a few days ago it couldn't work properly again. Also the saddle pedals on the TWC also crapping out as well, I disassembled it and noted similar potentiometer device controlling it, couldn't fix this fault. Now reassigned the saddle pedals on the TWC to two keys on my keyboard, and replaced the T1600M with a VBK Sim Gladiator Mk.II joystick. If the TWC dies too, I will probably have to stop playing ED.

I have one as 'spare' now, but that had over 1,000 hours use before I bought an X52 - surprising how much use a 'budget' HOTAS survives!

Check out virpil constellation alphas or vkb Kosmosima. You can go hosas, hotas or hotasas.
Going to look for more threads to necro....

Been using an x52 Pro for over 2 years now. Great feel and look, and plenty of buttons, particularly if you can supplement some commands with Voice Attack or other input devices.
Only issue I've had is some minor pitch and roll drifting, which I've fixed with a joystick curve rather than adjusting the dead zone. This has worked out well because the curve I was going to use in any case solved that problem. I did the magnet mod to increase the movement precision of the stick, and that has made a noticeable improvement. I also bought the 3D printed discs that can be used to increase the tension.

Main gripe for me has been the lack of center detent on the throttle. It comes with 25 and 75 detents, which I did the mod to remove because they're annoying, and I don't play non-space flight sims. I don't want to use the reverse button, so I really want a throttle with a center detent so I know when I'm at zero without going into reverse first, which is harder to do in VR. So, I've been eyeing the VPC Constellation Alpha stick with the WarBRD base and their MongoosT-50CM3 throttle. Not been able to justify it yet, but I hear mostly good things, so...

Not considering the Warthog because the stick has no yaw, and I don't want to use pedals.
