HOTAS users - How are you setting up your thrusters?

Hey JGM, FLIGHT ASSIST ON -Throttle lever position sets a target SPEED and maintains it. Thrust lever position applies a target THRUST, you will keep accelerating

FLIGHT ASSIST OFF - You can only control Thrust, even with your throttle.

Yeah I was thinking of it in terms of FA off so don't need the two separate binds. Thanks.

How do you fire two weapon groups at once if your thumb is controlling thrust on the stick?

The CH Fighterstick has a pinky button that I use for secondary fire. I switch between fire groups with a side button with my index finger, primary fire is my middle finger.

On my Thrustmaster Flight X HOTAS I use...
Hat for thrusters up,down,left,right.
Rocker for forward and backward thrusters.

As post #2 stated this gives the ability to leave main thruster at 50% blue and use the Rocker to make small adjustments.
For secondary fire I use a Left-Thumb-Button+Primary Fire to get around the hat problem.

When I am drunk none of this works for some reason?

Default x55 settings except for landing gear and lights and no roll into yaw stick twist.

X-52 user here. My setup...

Index Finger Hat on Throttle

In the Saitek Profile Editor, I had to change the default setting for this from "4-way" to "8-way". Until I did that, there was no concept of diagonal input!

This is my lateral thrust... pretty much as Elite Client delivers for the X-52 default profile.

Throttle

I use "full range", with quite a large Dead Zone set up in the Elite Client for this axis.

The Dead Zone minimises my incompetent displays of skating forwards and backwards on landing pads. :)

Stick Twist

...for yaw.

I use the same setup on my X-52. That 8-way hat on the throttle is my ideal spot for
thrusters. It was great in X3 as well.

X-55 here, I also have CH pedals but I don't use them in ED. Setup is as follows:

Stick:
Forwards/backwarks: pitch down/up
Left/right: left/right roll
Twist: left/right yaw
PoV hat: vertical and lateral thrusters

Throttle unit:
Throttle: forward only, button on throttle toggles reverse.
Lower rotary on throttle: vertical thrusters
Top rotary on throttle: lateral thrusters (I'm considering moving this to my pedals).

Button assignments aren't overly intersting tbh although other than primary fire on the trigger, I don't think a single one is default.
Try moving vertical and lateral thrusters to a hat on the throttle. It makes maneuvering easier. Steering twisting AND using thrusters all with the right hand is not pricise (in my opinion).

If I did that for myself, I wouldn't be able to control lateral/vertical thrust at the same time as forward/backward, which is useful in a turn fight.
Imo being able to thrust lateral, vertical, and forward/backward all at the same time as you roll/pitch/yaw is what can give the advantage over another opponent in a close fight.

CH Throttle; U/D thrusters assigned to the first and second finger grip buttons, laterals to the thumbstick.

Why not the secondary fire button for secondary fire? :)

I have vertical and lateral thrusters on the throttle coolie hat (Warthog) but also have all three axis mapped to a SpacePilot Pro for pad landings/manoeuvring etc.

Yep. I also make frequent use of the reverse thrust bind as an effective speed break (mapped to the speed break switch on Warthog throttle)

On my warthog I have a thumb hat on the right hand side of the throttle which has I have up/down and forward/back thrusters. The index finger hat also has up/down and also left right. There is another really sensitive little hat type thing on the back of the throttle that I use for Yaw.

Primary and secondary weapons are on the stick trigger and another stick button to allow either primary, secondary or both sets of weapons to be fired at once.

Using a flight X here,
Forward and Backward thrust with the throttle and again on its rocker for small adjustments
Vertical and lateral thrusts on the joystick's hat
The rest is pretty straight forward with the stick, only thing is I use the twist axis for yaw.

X36 here. Yaw is on the throttle rudder rocker, lateral and vertical thrust on one hat switch (targeting commands on t'other), throttle set to mid-point = neutral, 0% throttle - full reverse, 100% throttle - full forward.

I use a Thrustmaster Warthog and have up/down/left/right thrust on the joystick thumb hat with forward/reverse thrust on the thumb hat on side of the throttle.

Firing two weapon groups at once is easy when you have a two stage trigger on the stick ;)

I have my X-55 set on yaw = x axis (left-right movement) and pitch = y axis and rotate on z axis (twist) my vertical thrusters are assigned to the bottom thumb axis on throttle and my horizontal thrust is on the top thumb axis
