HOTAS users - How are you setting up your thrusters?

I have it the same way. You do realize that thrust is different from throttle.

Speaking as someone who has forward/backwards thrust on the throttle axis and as someone who's well aware that throttle and thrust are different, what I don't understand is what difference it makes to the actual matter of going forward and backwards. What advantage does having fwd/back thrust and throttle on different axes give you? I've never felt the need to try and use both at the same time. With FA-on, if I want to go faster I push the throttle forward. If I want to go slower I pull it back. And if I want to do an emergency stop I flick the button that reverses the axis direction. Whether makes any difference is debatable, but it certainly feels more dramatic. Why, with FA-on would I want to thrust forwards or backwards?

I use the thrusters when landing. fowards/reverse in tiny spurts.
Some like to mash their ships onto the landing pad, I don't.

Yeah, why would you bother when with FA-on the fwd/backwards thrust is doing the exact same as the actual throttle?

It was already explained.

It's easier to keep the throttle in the blue zone for agility and use small bursts of thruster forward/backward to adjust your distance to a target in a turn fight then constantly running the throttle up/down, reversing direction, going back forward, and ALWAYS ending your movement in the blue zone manually.
That's not efficient and wastes time constantly checking where your throttle is.

Using forward/reverse thrusters is also useful for landing, as the poster above just pointed out.

Is there an emoticon for "unconvinced"? A phrase I haven't head for a while; softly, softly catches the monkey. And I doubt that's harder than trying to manage six axes AND throttle simultaneously.

Never seen the need. And I manage to not mash my ship. But anyway, each to their own. To OP, my fwd/back thrust is on my throttle and it works for me.

Don't think anyone was trying to convince you. You asked for the reason and that's the explanation as to why people do that.
As you said, to each their own.

I am using a CH setup and started to use the following:

Joystick for pitch and roll
Throttle for forward/reverse speed
Thumbstick on the Throttle for Yaw and up/down
Pedals for Strafing (left/right)
One Pedal break for Flight Assist Off (Hold)

Initially I was using the pedals for Yaw, but this feels much more natural now.

Hotas X

STICK:
X= roll
Y= pitch
Z= yaw

HAT

up/down = up/down
l/r= l/r
throttle for forwards and backwards

I think that's the same isinona uses?

777 Driver reccommends rudder pedals. I wouldn't say no, but I find that the rudder action in the game is either very subtle (i.e. landing corrections), prolonged and slow (i.e sit & spin), or crazy frantic (i.e. breaking an interdiction). My old Saitek rudders are too stiff for that kind if action and will likely break, although I like the differential toe axes. So I've gone back to twist.

Everyone will have they're own preference, but what I found works best for me is to use the throttle "Joystick" to control Up/Down/Left/Right and I use one of the "joysticks" on the main stick to control forward/backward. I use the Saitek X52. Hope this helps, but ultimately, I hope you find what works most comfortably for you.

Hi,

I am using the following setup for Saitek X-55:

In the "Controls" options scroll down to "Flight Throttle" and adjust the following:
Throttle Axis: [Joy Z-Axis] Deadzone 0 (all the way to the left)
- Invert Axis: On

Throttle Axis Range: Full Range Forward Only Throttle Reverse:
- Hold Throttle Increments: Continuous

Everything else is empty.
Make sure you are setting those options in "Flight Throttle" not "Flight Thrusters".
Thrusters might be working in bursts instead of a smooth increase or decrease.

The middle part on the throttle is 0 speed or stop

Trying to find an intuitive and natural configuration for the thrusters on my X-55 HOTAS.
Right now I've got the stick twist on lateral thrusters, and the ministick on the throttle as thrust up/down forward/backward.
Finding it hard to thrust in both the z and y axis at the same time. Getting that diagonal position with the ministick is a challenge sometimes.

Interested to hear what other HOTAS users are doing to alleviate thruster woes?

I use the bottom of the two mini joysticks next to the red button on the throttle stick. Seems logical to me to assign any throttle use to the left control and direction, targeting, flight assist and firing controls to the right control, with auxiliary uses including odd flight controls like reversing and rotation correction off on, assigned to the myriad of buttons on the left control. But in the end it comes down to experimentation until you find what feels comfortable to yourself. Took me ages to get happy with my layout but now its cool and I never feel the need to change anything

CH setup here. Stick X-Axis is roll, Y-Axis is pitch, Pedals are yaw. Throttle for forward/back throttle, ministick on the throttle for lateral/vertical throttle. Thrust not bound at all.

Flight pedals for left and right thrust. With up and down thrust on the toe brakes of the pedals. I use a Logitech 3D Extreme for the extra twist axis on the joystick for yaw.

I leave the Warthog HOTAS in the cupboard for this game. I only use that for DCS A-10C or DCS Huey.

I have the digital lateral thrusters mapped to hat on Joystick H2, I have the mini-stick on throttle as analog thrusters as well, although I tend not to use it much as its not overally accurate. I use the throttle as full range for forward and back thrust.
