HOTAS users now NEED a keyboard/second controller for key bindings

I tried mapping out everything from the menu as soon as I was able to get into the game today. There is just no way whatsoever that I'll be able to map out all the functions on the HOTAS. I'm going to start using three-button mappings for necessary functions in-game.

We NEED support for second controllers, preferably keyboards. Not WANT, NEED. This game is great, but using HOTAS is extremely difficult on its own. I'm sure it's the same for people using Dualshock 4 or our friends over on the Xbox One. Now that both systems are able to use keyboards, aw jeez it would be nice if we could use them to make our experience better.

I understand that PC holds the lion's share of the player base. But please, we need this expansion of functionality so we can at least play the game.

It's not great on Dual Shock 4 either now. I had a binding that worked OK, basically the default with some things swapped over so that more important options were easier to get to and things like Boost are harder to activate by accident. I don't have a shortcut to chaff or anything but I get by.

In the new release I can access many of the new functions in menus, but the new display mode insists on a binding of its own just to get in there, something convenient ideally if you want to perform any scanning on the regular. Using it effectively calls for even more new bindings as far as I can tell - I'm going to have to get out a pad of paper and think about where I can move things. There's just nowhere convenient to put everything any more and this Half-Life, 1998 control binding interface isn't a good place to sort it out.

I think they came up with a new default mapping that they could just about get away with but didn't really consider how much of a flight sim environment they'd created for the controls. I kind of want to come up with separate exploration, trading and combat mappings but of course you can only store one custom configuration on a console.

There are CMDR's out there using the HOTAS X and keyboard.
Can anyone share there new mappings so we can see what we can play about with...

Many Thanks

You're talking about the ones on PC, right? Because as far as I know, there's only a one-controller option on PS4 and XB1.

I didn't find it too bad to be honest. All I had to do was drop the button I had set for Shield Cells (Circle+R1) and assign the ENTER FSS MODE to that. Once you activate the FSS, it has a key bind set which doesn't over write any of the old ones. I also dropped the keybind for previous fire group (Square+L1) and assigned SWITCH HUD MODE (in Mode Switches) to that, so that I can easily switch between analysis and combat HUD modes and once you're in analysis mode, you can just activate the DSS from a fire group, so no new key binding is needed for that - you just have to set up the buttons you use once the DSS is activated but these also do not overwrite any other key binds. It means I now only have next fire group bound but I can live with that. Depending on which I use the most, the only other thing I think I'm may change is my key binding for the ship lights (which can easily be accessed in the ship panel anyway) for the Night Vision mode.

Pretty much, yeah. I also had to increase the dead zone for the yaw and pitch controls of the DETAILED SURFACE SCAN by pressing triangle on them. For me the slider was all the way to the left which caused the cursor for firing probes to move on its own. Once I increased this to around 10 notches to the right it stopped moving.

You pretty much have to have a keyboard plugged in anyway, for the new Comms commands. Agree it would be great to be able to map to more than one controller at once. That way I could use a g29+pedals for SRV control, HOTAS for ship, and keys for everything else. Ideally...

And while we're at it, head look with the PS4 camera in lieu of full VR.

But we all know consoles get very limited development support, right? ☹️

I use the hotas on my ps4 and have bindings to spare. A keyboard option would be good for in game chat but pointless for me as I play through PSVR.

I thought you couldn't play elite with psvr? People have been asking fdev to make it psvr compatible for a while how did you get it to work???

If you get a little creative with the Binds file in Notepad you can make one button do two things, For example, my "Activate DSS" in supercruise also closes and opens hard points in normal space. The button is the same but the function is different dependant on if you are in SC or Normal space.

I use a Warthog in VR and actually have a bit of spare button capacity. Oh for speed I use a trackball in DSS mode for scanning, but it is also mapped to my HOTAS I just like the trackball
feel of scanning around the screen

I just use the largest screen setting. It’s not 3D and you don’t have headlook, which is a shame, but it’s like playing elite at the cinema. I play all my games through PSVR. I don’t need a TV so don’t have to pay TV tax.

Oh ok I thought you meant you were playing full on vr on ps4 and was confused. From what people were saying it sounded like ed doesn't work at all on psvr so I'm surprised you got it to.

TV tax? You mean like the sales tax when buying a TV? Or do you live in a weird country that makes people pay taxes for owning a TV? If so that's some straight up commie biowaste dude lol

The united kingdom of Great Britain and republic of Ireland (which is any thing but united after the brexit vote so should no longer be called the UK... ) still taxes people who watch TV live broadcasts...
People Who want to pay the BBC call it a TV license. those opposed to paying the BBC call it a tax... if you have a Digital Freeview ( called FTA in EU and USA) decoder connected to an aerial you are required to pay the tax...
It an opt out system... not opt in.. Every address in the UK that does not opt out by removing the aerial connection and declaring to the goverment that that have done so are required by law to pay... the system contains a data base of those address that have not paid and will constantly send out reminders to houses that are listed as not paid or those who fail to declare that have no aerial connection.
The government is also trying to Force UK ISPs to declare who watches with out paying via live streaming content online with ISP sign up information being extracted by court orders to ISPs along with the UK version of FBI and CIA aka the GCHQ using data colleection tracking and stealing data to ID those using it online... via apps provided by the BBC who fund those app developments via the tax...

And thing is once you have paid your tv 'tax' you then get access to loads of free to view channels also

The Licence fee actually goes to the BBC as they have no commercials on their channels and so have to generate revenue from somewhere.

The BBC was good until it decided it wanted to be the Brussels Bullshoot Company

Guys, not sure TV licensing has got much to do with Elite Dangerous or Keyboard support. Please stay on topic, TV License discussion is a stretch even for me. :)

I think keyboard support in addition to controller support in ED on PS4 would be a great step forward. PS4 already supports it and Elite Dangerous supports it in a limited fashion. For example, I can fly in ED with my HOTAS and then type in a system name into the galaxy map route input box using my wireless keyboard connected to PS4. Just need support for key-bindings for keyboard added into ED. I would also very much welcome support for a USB button box that would enable key bindings. A lighted button box with say 20 keys bound would be an awesome addition to my setup. O7
