How about a VR dedicated Newsletter issue, even if just once!

There are a lot of us that really enjoy playing Elite Dangerous in VR. Each time an Elite Dangerous Newsletter hits, and there have been a LOT of them now that we are up to #312, I always scour it for any information on VR support, VR news, VR updates, etc. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, the topic of VR rarely if ever surfaces. It seems to never even be mentioned.

Why not for once make an Elite Dangerous Newsletter issue that specifically covers VR? Even if it is just once! I for one would love to hear more about VR support plans for ED if there are any - or if not, then at least tell us! And what about VR performance tips, recommended VR hardware, links to external VR tips for ED, commander experiences in VR, etc... So many possibilities here!

Elite Dangerous in VR is an incredible experience and I really wish it were covered or talked about a bit more by the devs and commanders in the regular newsletter. It really shouldn't be ignored and sidelined as heavily as it is!

The VR sub-forum is the place you are looking for 😁 as well as:

I doubt we’ll ever get a dedicated newsletter, but I’m hopeful VR will get a mention sometime in the future - if/when “proper” VR gets implemented for on-foot Odyssey, or PSVR2 catches someone’s interest at FDev.

Well, if not a dedicated issue, how about even just ONE newsletter article talking about or focusing on the Elite Dangerous VR experience and Frontier's VR plans? It is really sad that a community sub-forum is the only place that VR in ED is openly discussed, and it doesn't really seem to include any devs or anyone else from Frontier in any sort of an official capacity.

Other than that one news item blurb that you linked to from last year (thanks for that btw!), which wasn't even posted in the VR sub-forum, there simply isn't anything there from them. The VR sub-forum just seems populated with ED VR fans. Why is it that VR is such a pariah to Frontier? It is such a great addition to the game! Why can't they discuss VR more openly, even if only through a single Frontier liaison? I fully get that adding full VR support to Odyssey just isn't in the cards right now and that it probably won't happen anytime soon. And I also get that VR simply isn't a big revenue driver for them, but surely some of Frontier's devs out there are as passionate about VR in ED as we are?! Frontier never seems to want to talk about its existence... and I get the feeling its devs may not be allowed to discuss the topic? To me at least, VR support is such a huge part of what makes ED a truly great game!

Thing is, no matter how good a writer you are, I think VR is one of those things you can only truly “get” by experiencing it first hand. Even when they did a VR livestream, it was still almost the same images as normal but the player’s head in the lower right corner now had a HMD on. I think it makes it a difficult “sell”.

The reason it was implemented originally was due to one Dev being passionate about VR and it being fairly quick to hook into the code. Over the last few years it’s felt (to me at least) that the same level of passion isn’t there any more.

I’m hoping things will change - headset ownership is on the rise, Quest 2 is reasonably cheap, easy to set up and doesn’t need a massively strong PC. I hope more CMDRs are tempted to try it out and discover what they’ve been missing 😁 Still, FDev are always fairly reticent concerning ED normally - and combined with an enthusiastic VR player-base, they probably don’t want to say anything that’ll come back and bite them.

I think sadly there is very little for them to say on VR right now. They’re focused on the classic/pancake EDO experience for now:

We're still looking at the way that we would tackle that if we need to. Or if we decide that we think we can get a good way of doing it. And sure, like, that's something that we'll tackle, but for the moment, we have to focus on the actual main experience and getting that working the way that we really want it to feel. So on day one, there won't be any VR support. But we're not saying never, it's just we need to focus our efforts elsewhere right now.

You can see a timeline of quotes on VR here.

If you fancy making lemonade from these lemons in the meantime, maybe come support my suggestion thread ;)
