How about having medals in game to promote things we can do?

I was thinking about the triple-Elite ranks, and why nothing happens after that.

This made me think of all the games where you get badges for unlocking achievements, and I thought it would be possible to do something similar in Elite.

The way it could work would be to award medals when certain achievements have been completed. These medals could be awarded for things like...

Visiting Sagittarius A
Visiting Beagle Point or Livingstone Point
Rescuing a stranded ship and its passengers
Killing an Elite pirate, wanted for crimes
Transport passengers across the galaxy
Contributed goods to a relief effort or relief community goal
Defeated a Thargoid in combat

This sort of thing.

Then if we want to be awarded all the medals (and there could be a hundred of them) we have to have successfully completed each of the tasks at least once :)

What do you think?

Yep this could almost be streamed into career avenues. So you achieve the first exploration medal and it opens up more and more. I think this kind of gameplay would offer things to achieve when self motivation is lacking. And would offer some more goals.

My knee said ACHIEVEMENT GET CONSOLE GARBAGE NOOOOOOOOOOOOEESSSS. D:

Then my memory said YOU PLAYED ALL OF TIE FITAR AND HOW BIG WAS YOUR SEKRIT SOCIETY TATTOO AND MEDAL CASE SUCKER.

Make them extra cool mission badges and medals given from the PF and other organizations, and give me a cool way to view them, and I will take this as a feature. This stuff could be added to almost endlessly by focusing subsets on career paths, stats and other groupings. It's not like we don't have a lot of this data stored already - except inside a really boring list in our right HUD panel. Put this crap on a pipbar on my flightsuit or on a microdecal under my ship ID.

I think people would be generally against "console/Steam-style achievements" - many ED players are refugees from achievement-focused games and wouldn't like to see them here.

What you might find more popular is actual awards and decorations that would be visible in-game to you and others - medals for your flightsuit, or decals for your ships - earned by doing certain things which you could reasonably expect to receive some kind of commendation for. Participating in certain CGs and fleshing out the "military career" with military awards and campaign medals as rewards would be two options that I think would receive far more approval from the player base.

I don't know, FE2 had medals, although I have no idea what you had to do to get them... :D Still, they came along.

The OP's suggestion for sideline achievements, things you get for 'doing stuff' is quite a nice idea.

@Red - Not saying I need badges or anything...

It was "FE2 had medals" that got me thinking along those lines. Because the FE2 medals were issued by the superpowers, strictly for military duties. This FrontierAstro page lists the medals each superpower offered and what you had to do to earn them, but basically it was "successfully complete mission type X once" and you get the medal. Each Superpower gave out six medals, one for each mission type (though there were two for the photography mission, depending on the "quality" of the picture). As that page states, there was an additional medal in FFE you'd get from the INRA if you completed the Exterminate the Thargoids mission, but since that mission was bugged, there was never a way to attain that medal in-game.

Of course, you never "saw" the medal and it never meant anything more than a line on the CMDR Status page. I'd like to think medals in ED, if implemented, would be more meaningful than that.

No medals, please. The premise if this game is "blaze your own trail", and the last thing it needs right now is a bunch of medals, followed shortly by forum and reddit post with optimized instructions on how to get them with minimum effort, and a whole lemming train of people doing the same thing.

This is exactly what will happen.

All we need is just the "Right On, Commander!" message :)

Medal style achievements or Steam style awards in ED are pretty worthless. Sooner or later, someone discovers a quick and easy way to get the achievement, and then everyone has it with minimal effort.

So a bit like gaining 'Elite' status, or high faction ranks. Or an Anaconda.

It's not as if it would be anything different, if we had more things to aspire to collecting. Those who wish to take the easy, quick way will do so, as they already do. Others will play 'correctly' - if there is such a thing.

There were medals in Frontier (Elite 2) as far as I remember for military service so yes I'd like to see them in game, especially Imperial ones...:D

Er Hello http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Livery

Or like https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Achievements

They have that in CQC

If people feel the need to include achievements to Elite Dangerous to help them gain a sense of achievement then I'm all for that. I just want FDev to ensure that the system that enables that functionality is under their control and not based on a 3rd party framework (like Steam, Playstation or XBOX). Make it in-game and give the players the option to proudly display it either on their ships or on the info panel after a scan.

I think the only motive for medals/achievements would tangibly be to advertise "things to do for players that are stuck or undecided", otherwise its just another shallow game mechanic. What I would rather see is a system in game to get more players involved or aware of the various story, exploration and research activities fed by Canonn and or NPCs like Ram Tah including missions to go do stuff. Canonn do a great job because its noticeably absent from the game.
