How Are You Typing In VR?

Actually, maybe someone like Slopey could answer this.

How hard would it be to have a hot keyed keyboard overlayed over the VR graphics. You press a key and a virtual keyboard appears to enter info on the screen, search parameters, chat to other CMDR's, whatever.

I would really like to see Leap Motion support added to turn the UI's into touch screens.

Will need a virtual keyboard UI, but then it will be quite simple to type in ED.

FYI, I bought my Leap Motion via Amazon for about £20... It's quite a nice bit of tech, but not many games support it at the moment.

I've seen that voice attack is able to type in letters. There is a preset to purchase that can do this. But this seems to be very complicated to achive in voice attack by yourself.

I would do something like this:

2 Profiles: One "Main"-Profile and another for your entries.

On command ("Spell" for instance) VA switch to the Typing-profile. Now you can spell the system. S - O - L or better: Sierra - Oscar - Lima. Every command do type the appropriate letter. So the Typing profile needs all alphabetic letters and one additional command: "Enter" oder something like that. This command uses the Enter-key and switch back to your Main-Profile.

This should work. Hm.. I have to try this out next time... :)

This is indeed an issue with VR in ED. The solution in my opinion is for FD to develop an virtual keyboard that you can navigate as you would the UI panels. Building on this, when current VR grows to include something like the Leap Motion controller then perhaps we can use this to type in the air on said virtual keyboard.

Problem solved then.

I've seen a couple variations of stt in voice attack, they all seemed rather arduous. The difficulty, to me, seems to be not in recognizing the speech, but in: accessing the appropriate text field, entering desired text, and sending the text. Also difficulties can arise in directing the communication to the correct person.

I quote myself this time: i tested it and it works great so far. I had to add all the numbers and the minus key. The only issue with this is the bad voice recognition. But it is a quite good work-arround.

But the best would be a virtual keyboard as many people said before.

Are there any videos that capture how the XBOne handles text input?

Makes sense, as CMDR d00nicus pointed out, to make the systems similar. XBOne has no physical keyboard (and neither do VR players for all intents and purposes, unless you do know how to touch type, and well)

I have not tried using my steering wheel to drive the SRV, Didn't make sense to me on an immersion point of view because your avatar is using the same HOTAS chair as the ships cockpit. That slightly amuses me really, as if a HOTAS setup will be the evolution of the modern car controls.
I would love to see an option in graphic settings to enable a toggle between virtual HOTAS or steering wheel inside the SRV.

Is it easier to drive with steering wheel?

The real question here is not, however, how to type, but how to sip beer while playing with HMD.

I have a small BT keyboard mouted via Velcro to my HOTAS sticks base. I touch type and find it very reliable and convenient.

I wouldn't use a pass through camera even if I had the option too as I prefer immersion over practicality, so anything which means taking off the HMD or seeing the real world is a big no no. It's also easy enough to map a number of well used text phrases to other controllers as macros. A pirate player could easily map 10 or so well used lines of text to the buttons on an unused Xbox One pad in order to quickly fire off demands, although I do agree that some sort of in game virtual keyboard would be nicer!

With the DK2 it is easy, still waiting on my CV1 to see if it is still easy.

I smoke and drink beer with my DK2 during 3 - 4 hour sessions in ED with no problems. All you have to do is peer through the nose piece, locate the can, and tilt head more to drink.

I set up voice attack to allow me to spell out text using the phoenetic alphabet.

It wasn't too bad to set up, I did it as a mode switch. i.e. create a command "Start text input" or something, that switches profile, then an "End text input" or similar command to switch back to the previous profile.

However, i found it is just quicker and simpler to set up the keybindings so you can navigate the UI's comfortable, including previous/next tab, and then touch typing in the input boxes.

In my experience too, exaggerated head tilting (with DK2) works well. I usually don't peer through the nose hole, just feel it with my hands - no accident yet.

Straws are no good for beer. :)

For FD? Easy enough. For a 3rd party, probably impossible currently.

Do you ever smell burning plastic when you're lighting up?

For not spilling it all over the place, mount one of these to your chair/desk/hmd or wherever:

For VA, first i made a derived command for actually plotting a route via the Galmap.
Then, beeing in a player group, i just added most surrounding systems in VA (when you speak->quick input).
Works a charm, easy to add systems in a bunch between Sessions.

But, as i bought the OSVR and it's kinda flawed (SteamVR/tracking) i'm back to triple mon.
Using VA nonetheless, me lazy one...
