Newcomer / Intro How can I avoid being scanned?

Hi all,

I have tried to do a couple of missions where I had to deliver data, payment on condition that my ship must not be scanned. I tried twice but every time I was entering the space station my ship was scanned and the mission failed - and I had to pay a fine! How can I avoid being scanned when entering space stations - if I can?

Thanks.

+ Line up with the station, boost 2,5 km away from the slot, chaff and get in fast.

+ Line up and trigger silent runnig just 3,5 km away, chaff and get in.

+ Mix both option

Just be fast in entering the slot. Approach the station from the planet side, inside the orbit. If the instance is recently spawned, the station will be generally pointing toward the center of its orbit, pointing 45 degrees up or down. To put it another way, approach from above or below the orbital plane. Come in between the station and the planet and once you get to the orbital plane, put the planet directly behind you. For most instances you will drop out of SC right in front of the station with the opening tilted 45 degrees up or down.

Depending on your ship, you can boost once or twice toward the front of the station and then curve into the slot. I generally boost, request docking as soon as I get into range (7.5km) and boost again if I'm in a smaller ship (not so much in a Cutter :D ). By coming out of SC in front of the station and boosting quickly toward the station, I can avoid scans even when I use a Docking Computer. I find speed is much more reliable than using silent running, since SR isn't guaranteed and you have to manage your heat.

Edit: Also, practice when you're not smuggling. I treat every approach to station as a smuggling run. That way when I am smuggling something, I don't worry and I just follow my normal procedure.

The internal security patrols the edges of the slot, if you stay dead center and move quickly you can get in before a scan is complete. I don't do any of the stuff listed above aside from moving quickly and I have only been fully scanned once. Once you are in the slot, deploy landing gear immediately.

My normal scenario is I see "scan detected" just as I am entering the slot, this means that I have made it, they will not be able to complete their scan before I am in and land, thus I complete my missions or deliverer my illicit goods, or pay off my bounty =P

I've never had problems with being scanned, the trick is rather easy.
This works perfectly fine when hauling illicit cargo or doing a mission where mission fails when scanned.
So here's what I do:
When leaving the station, first line yourself up with the exit, retract landing gear and put all power into engines.
then look on your radar to make sure that ships are not at the exit (or as far from exit/entrance as possible)
and then just boost out of there full speed, keep on boosting until you're no longer mass locked and then jump out of there.

Same thing when entering the station, when coming out of hyper space, don't instantly go close to station, stay away and find the entrance side.
line yourself up with entrance, put power in engines and keep flying until you're 7.5 away, then request docking and then go full speed.
when you're near the entrance, hit X (by default) to stop all movement and hit L (by default) to open landing gear (helps with braking)
If you have a cobra or any other ship that goes over 350, you might end up hitting the wall at back, but if you have shields, it shouldn't even take the shields off.
Optionally you can go little bit slower if you're afraid and use silent running from 3-4km distance, just don't overheat yourself.

Couple of things to add here:

- You have not said what ship you are flying. If you're flying a large lumbering ship like a T9, you will find it pretty hard to avoid being scanned. Asp or Cobra are best for smuggling missions in my experience.

- If your station that you need to go to is an outpost rather than a station, if a cop follows you out of SC and tries to follow you to the outpost, my advice is to boost away and SC away and wait a minute or two before dropping out again - once you actually start to dock at the outpost the cops can still scan you and it's very difficult to avoid.

- Heatsinks and silent running don't make you completely invisible to NPCs - if they are close enough they will still see you.

- I suspect this is going to get more difficult in 2.1/1.6 because there will now also be cops at the planet bases as well - in 2.0 they were rare.

Also, if you did get a scan just fire 1 shot at the Police/Security ship to break it and avoid completing the scan. You may become WANTED but is better than failing all your Missions. You then simply jump out and then come back in. This usually resets the Cops off your trail as they've already been to see you and think you won't be back!

Be fast basicly, and fingercross that FD will change the silent running mechanic and the npc's won't be able to scan u if your heat is below 3-5%, couse right now, it does not make any difference.
And the argument that they still see u.... well they don't scan with their eyes-.-

Right now the mechanic is dumb, and u need the fastest ship possible, rather then u need to be tricky and coutious with heat managment.

You hardly need the fastest ship possible. I've successfully smuggled in my Python, Anaconda, and Cutter, and none of them are exactly zippy. As long as you watch the patrol patterns when exiting the station and drop out of SC in front of the station when approaching, you can successfully evade scan without using silent running,

No need for chaff nor silent running. Line up directly in front of the slot at a distance of about 6km to 7km out. Use your down-thruster whilst hitting boost and pointing at the slot to line up with it. When you're in position give a single boost. When you get to about 4 km out and your speed is above 300 go to zero throttle. When you get to 2km out and your speed is still above 300, use full reverse and put down your landing gear as a brake. You can also use the cargo scoop if you're still too fast. You want to aim for a speed of about 220 as you go through the slot. When you approach in a straight line from directly in front of the slot, it's surprising how slow you can go without getting scanned. I often just fly in without even boosting. If a scan starts and you're still too far out, just hit boost and immediately go to full reverse and deploy your landing gear and cargo scoop to slow down enough. Sometimes, when I just fly in, a scan starts about 2km out, but it only takes a few seconds to get through the slot, so I just ignore it and carry on. Once through the slot, the scan can't normally finish, though it's best not to take unnecessary risks.

The above is for an ASP. Different ships behave differently regarding acceleration/deceleration, but the idea is the same. go nice and fast until you get to about 2km out, then slow down to 220 as you go through the slot.

If your delivery station is a military outpost, I would advise silent running. I'm not sure whether it does anything though. From my last eight times at military outposts, I used silent running three times and got scanned once. Three times, I didn't realise it was a military outpost, so just flew in and landed normally without being scanned (lucky?). Twice, I was followed in by a pirate, so I waited until he started to shoot me, then all the Feds flew out to get him, which left the path clear for me to land normally.

Long time smuggler here. Lots of good tips in the thread.

The biggest problem that makes scans happen is spending time within scan range of the patrol ships that orbit the station entry. That range is about 3 Km or so.
Once you are outside of that range, or inside the station, you're good.

If you are running cold, you can shrink that range to about 1.5 Km for small-medium ships. Maybe about 2 Km for a bigger vessel like a Python. But they can lock on still once you get close. Silent Running all the way to the slot is just overheating for nothing. You can shut it off at about 1.5Km away- they can see you anyhow. Since you become "visible" much closer in, giving less time for scanning is still useful.

So, when you drop out of Supercruise you will want to emerge well outside of the scan range. Hit the drop out as soon as you get the alert, because getting real close often plonks you straight into a 3 Km scan. I've seen the opposite advice: delay the drop in and get close because they have less time to see you. Don't be misled, close drops are a trap and that might be your issue right there.

If you are unlucky and there's a Police vessel outside the station that is suspicious, don't fly into the station. Turn round, boost away, and jump out into Supercruise for awhile. Pull up your Nav Panel, and lock onto any nearby system star. If he follows you out and starts to chatter about interdiction, just leave town and come back later.

If the approach is clear, this is my protocol: I have buttons bound to half speed, zero speed and max speed.

Set half speed.
Face Station, and roll to line up the facing plane.
Use vertical thrusters to square off the approach- you want to head in hot at a plumb 90 degrees to the facing plane.
Switch off thrusters before you visibly line up completely or you'll over correct even with FA on. Takes a little practise.
Cut your speed if you are straying too close - 4000 m distance is my limit.
Request docking preferably at max range ( 7500 - 7000 m), but do it once lined up and ready to run in.
Set pips to shields as you like. Weapons should have no pips.
I kill Flight Assist for more speed in. That's optional.

Set speed to max. Then, Boost in if ship is slow. Boosting in at low speed reduces your performance.
Hit Silent Running if paranoid, kill it at 1500 m out. No need for a Heat sink.
Cut speed and drop landing gear just before you enter the slot.
If you are too fast, and going to crash into the rear wall, flip over to face the exit and try to stop. That doesn't happen often, but if you just went back to a Cobra from a T7, well heh.

Not ALL the patrol ships can do scans. Some of them don't have scanners - if you get bored, loiter outside a station in a ship with no contraband, and target them. You can poke through their subsystems and see for yourself. That means there are gaps in the scan coverage, but we can't realistically make any use of this unless we scan them and figure out the holes in the patrol. That's feasible if you are pulling in stuff to a Black market system, and you know it well. Not feasible if you get a Shadow Delivery to somewhere new.

However, we can still leverage this a little: if you fly in just behind or aside a slower ship, there is a chance that the scanning patrollers might be scanning him instead. If there's space, you can slip past him on the wrong side as he's entering the slot.

Here's one YouTube video showing some techniques and summarising most of the points made above for version 1.5/2.0. Probably will need to be fine-tuned for 1.6/2.1. There's probably another dozen videos on the same subject with slightly differing opinions but better to pick the more recent ones which will be applicable to the current version.

(But sometimes its good to experiment yourself so that you use a method that matches your playing technique)

My method is to start around 10km and put full power to engines and boost in the door. Dont forget to ask for docking of course. Its quite exciting coming to a stop before the end of the station in an Anaconda.

I have only just started playing and have a bog-standard Sidewinder. I only tried these missions as there was nothing else on the BB that I could do. Rank not high enough yet.

Elite Dangerous missions are mostly optional. If I recall, currently only naval ranking requires doing them. So if you don't find anything on the BB, go do something else. You can trade with nearby systems, go exploring, mining, or just hang out at a Resource Extraction Site with the local cops and shoot some Wanted ships. As you trade, sell mined goods, and turn in bounty vouchers, you'll increase your rank and your reputation with the local factions, which in turn will also open up more BB missions.

This was exactly my experience, I only recently after over a year of play decided I wanted Imperial Naval Rank and am doing missions. But I'm flying in an FDL, with all the stuff I want on it. So don't think doing your own things isn't lucrative, it can be incredibly so if you are just paying attention to trends in the 'Verse. Missions suck when you are starting out anyways, be your own pilot and have fun out there space cowboy!
