I want to change the name of my ship and have only played a small amount of time so no big deal. I do not see where to start another ship up or delete the old one. Any ideas??

Ship names are not implemented yet.
I don't understand what do you mean by "start a new ship up or delete the old one". You buy new ships in a shipyard and you have the option to either park and store your current ship there OR exchange it as part of the deal for the new ship (so you pay a lot less for the new ship, but you loose the old one + all the equipment).
If you meant starting a new game from the scratch, you have to "Clear Save" from the main menu (under Options if I remember correctly).

When we registered and picked our names I assumed they were embedded......But it looks like if you clear your save you can pick a new one....Is that correct ?
What if someone trys to use your name ?

Correct, you can pick a new name.
The scenario where someone picks your name between the time you clear your save and start a new game is extremely unlikely to happen. I mean it takes 10 seconds at MOST to go from Options to Start New Game option in the menu - what are the chances that someone will pick the name you chose within those 10 seconds?

No I mean...I use synchro...if I pick fred for instance ....and play that....then someone new comes in and picks synchro... trust me its common when I try to sign up for new accounts
will I have lost that username ?
I probably wont change ..... just wondering though

Yes, it's lost. Your forum name and in game name are not connected in any way. First come - first serve basis, however there may be some KS backers names that are reserved, but I am not sure on this one - someone that backed at KS level would have to confirm.

I remember when we signed up we had to request our name....have it verified and confirmed etc....It was a big deal back then.

I pledged at the KS level where I could reserve a name, but when I created my commander at the start of gamma the game didn't allow me to use my reserved name. I didn't think much of it since at that point the general opinion was there'd be a wipe anyway before release. There wasn't, so I'm curious now if there's a way to rename my current commander to my reserved commander name.
