How cold does a ship need to be to disappear from sensors?

Do sensors operate like NPC scanners i.e.: via infra-red and if so, how "cold" does my ship need to be to drop from another ship's sensors? I have observed CMDR Obsidian Ant using this technique against NPCs in a YouTube video, turning off modules to drop his heat signature to below 30% which appears to work against NPCs but what about against human piloted vessels? If my heat percentage is below 30% will my ship be invisible to the sensors of other ships?
 
as ships can be engineered sensors etc I would have thought there are differing degrees of detectability but default ships should have the same approx detectability range.............................
also if users have there graphics set to maximum draw distance an eyeball may give away your position to a steele eyed commander
so my guess is itsa bit varied
 
Range, sensor acuity, and target heat all affect it. Barring silent running and heat sinks, I'd think you have to be below 20% to hide at mid range.

Plenty of ships idle at 30%, so that seems far too high.

My dbs idles at 23% and it's mostly out of target at mid range.
 
That figure makes sense. I wonder if heat/distance have a linear relationship with constant sensor acuity? IE, at 10% you can only be seen within a km, at 20% within 2 km, etc.

I think there are quite a few variables, including what sensor type you're using (if it's modded and/or facing target etc) as well as the temp the target ship is running at.
 
My ex dropped was only at like 60% when she disappeared from mine.

Anyway, I think it depends just a bit on your range. Have had a visual on a ship with no lock on plenty of times and had to close to a varying amount of closer. 30% is a good start number.
