How could players be encouraged to put themselves into dangerous pvp scenarios, even when they don't have to?

I take part in the actual CG in Open. In the LTT198 System is a ganker that always kill me when I am just jumped in to deliver the minerals to the megaship. I normally know how to deal with this and manage to evade most gankers. But this one is too fast. Destroyed my FSD in seconds. So I changed Cargo Space for hull reinforcements and module reinforcements just to change profit for safety. Killed again. No chance to get away, to highwake etc. My Krait is engineered a little only (thrusters, Shield boosters, fsd). I have seen countless tutorials how to avoid interdictions and how to escape gankers. Even practiced with my teammate in game how to do this efficiently. But nothing works against this cmdr. Met 2 nice RP Pirates then in game who gave me some advise (they wanted to rob me, but because I get killed all the time I have no cargo on board when I respawn at the local station). Seems like the only way is to grind endlessly until my ship is engineered enough so I can survive long enough to highwake and protect my fsd much more. So what should I do? Quit the CG? Block this guy? Turn to solo? I like open and I like the thrill of the possible danger. But that's just ridicoules. I have no time to grind the engineers now and I want to take part in the CG. I am really a little bit depressed because I can't do anything against that ganker now. Sorry if this doesn't fit into the topic here, but thought so because of the title.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Agree that some commanders behavior is very annoying at times.

If I were you, then maybe I would:
  • try using smaller/faster ship to make high wake and avoiding interdiction easier. Not sure if that's the case but while flying even unengineered viper mk-3 at Deciat I was never interdicted.
  • join some squadron which have good pvp-ers and ask there for help. Just seeing you in a wing may already reduce your attractiveness for gankers.

Good luck with community goal!

Well... you can block him already
or you can switch to PG/Solo

And not at last, the scope of the CG is to deliver goods, not to avoid murder-boats while you play in a paper plane...

You can go solo and do it. Don't blame the player. They just play what's on offer. It's the devs designing the toxic gameplay who are responsible.

But may be fun to just use Solo to enter the system, and then switch to Open again to deliver the goods - in this manner they'll still see you and know you avoided the "blockade" -

you can even get them to chase you a bit, as long you don't grant them advantage of coming in at the main star which is where they normally hang out :)

You've identified the possible choices, it's up to you to pick one.

If you're determined to continue the CG and don't mind which mode, switch to Solo.

If you're determined to get past that guy eventually, carry on doing what you're doing.

If you want to continue the CG in Open and don't want to be exploded, block him.

If you've had enough of the CG, go play in another system.

None of these are the right choice and none are wrong. The choice just depends on what you want to do in the game.

How about you sent them a friend request (or accept theirs) and ask them for some advice? Seems like an ideal learning opportunity to me ;)

Even if they don't want to talk, with them on your friend list you will be able to see where they are & when they are online (and when they are not in the game) so you can avoid meeting them.

this goes both ways... the ganker will also be able to see where his victim is...
And since apparently the ganker already killed him several times, why would be stopping now when can keep tabs of his victim?

Don't CGs like this usually come with an option to sign up to protect ships by collecting bounties too? Seems like a ball was dropped when initiating this CG as I feel an alternate option like that may have encouraged more players to be in system defending non combat players.

Fact: unegineered non combat ships will blow up quickly every time against an experienced cmdr in a ship engineered to kill players. A build to defend against this will essentially prevent you from participating in the CG efficiently.

Pretty much only option is solo/pg. It sucks but even if you block one ganker, there always another ready to take thier place.

Edit: you could also form a wing with friends who fly with you specifically to protect you to deliver your goods

Because to the 'ganker' it's just one more player making up a heatmap of activity & they go where the action is, they won't pursue a single player. Unfriending after a chat (or failure to) is always an option.

I've been chased & harassed (with good reason) by faction supporters, and in some cases have had to unfriend them to avoid giving them important tactical info (ie the systems I am working), I've never needed to do that with any 'ganker' type player & have quite a few on my friend list. Some I have helped with BGS stuff, some have helped me (Gunboat diplomacy).

Try it, there's nothing to lose :)

... they don't pursue a single player.

well, apparently the cmdr that posted the message said he was killed more than once by the same player. At least 2 times, most probably 3-4 times
i would also assume a ganker take notes of it's targets, so they know who can be killed and who's a waste of time

so indeed, they might not pursue a single player, but any player that can be killed fast.. and that is stubborn enough to get back and be killed again... And again.
🤷‍♂️

Then we have players blocking them or taking refuge in solo/pg
And then we have Open only threads...

Thanks a lot for all the answers and advices so far. What bothers me most, is that it is his fully engineered FDL that causes my trouble as I have learned due to the talks with the two Pirate players I had. My piloting skills are, as far as I can judge, decent enough for the normal ganker. During the Kumo Crew Drug Producing CG some weeks ago I managed to evade every ganker and was not killed once (perhaps some luck also). I just have to acknowledge that the game sometimes allows grinding engineers is more efficient than flight skill. And that you can counter this only with grinding by yourself. I don't blame any player of course. In fact I appreciate the existence of gankers at least to some degree because that forced me to learn how to fly and the tactics to counter them. And it makes the game more thrilling. I have learned some new stuff due to this all at least and that's good. Engineering seems to be more important than I thought and I have to go into this deeper in the future. For now I think I block him for the duration of the CG and stay in Open. I will not let me force to go solo by this ganker and miss the fun encounters with all the other players.

And we have players unwilling to learn too, they are playing their own way & don't need to take any suggestions offered. TobiasFuzz asked for suggestions, not reasons not to bother :) The players met repeatedly in the CG system, that's not a coincidence but it's not a targeted attack either.

Try it. Friend a ganker, ask them what they would have done to survive or succeed. I have (not at a CG) been escorted into hostile territory by 'ganker' type players, against players specifically looking for me (not just looking for any random target). I have employed 'gankers' to police systems (hired thugs), been policed out of systems, been popped by gankers following their own friends (that were helping me), who then helped me with CZs as compensation for the 'misunderstanding'.

It works. I mean, it's like being in a lion's den while the lion eats your enemy, you gotta pay attention but it does work.

And it's a lot more fun than just using the block list or playing in group/solo.

A ganker type player is just having fun in a different way. They aren't monsters, they are no more likely to be a jerk than any other player (less likely ime, most are as passionate about outfitting as I am about the BGS).

And if it doesn't work out, unfriending them is easy too.

System chat on ps4 might disagree with you. The gankers on console are quite toxic and harassing. Fdev has " no plans(tm)" to do anything about it though because even when players report it, it persists 🤷‍♂️

Indeed engineering is extremely important to survive in open when facing a pro ganker.
The noob wanabe gankers can be evaded in non-engineered ships too - as you could see for yourself, but the good ones... nope.

System chat is usually propaganda, and a warning to be on guard. My favourite was 'akakaka, akakak' (years ago now, can't even remember the event), from the movie 'Mars Attacks!' ;)

Never found any other use for it.

Not when they fly G5 FDL murder boats against non engineered mining kraits. And repeatedly killing the same non-engineered Krait

It's not like i dont get what you say, but it doesnt seem applicable in this specific context: mining cg, unengineered ship vs murderboat, etc.

One further variant - join forces with other haulers, wing up and do simultaneous "banzai" jumps into the system. Ganker can only deal with one target at a time. Not as easy as it should be to get organised, as even people in open can be fairly, um, closed. But ways I've found to get better traction- share (objective-completed) wing missions with random people (hey, free money, you would like some?) - even if the reward is small it starts a good feeling. Or find people who are talkative but not idiots in CG system chat (strike up convos there), and direct message them. Also, I think @Ethaidan mentioned a while ago that they were going one further and organising CG convoys for just these reasons. Not sure if that still stands.

This is all a route to enhanced gameplay, if you play it right :).
