how do i choose a side in a CZ

It's in the comms panel now when you jump into a CZ.
Easy mistake to make, I forgot where it was when I jumped into a cz post update.
Nope, not getting anywhere with this.
On my first visit to the CZ, I shot up numerous ships but got no combat bonds.
On my second attempt, I picked a side on the station's mission board, flew to the CZ, shot up various ships, and got no combat bonds.
On my Transactions tab, I have "Fight for Yupini Limited". Apparently I must "sign up as an active participant".
On my comms panel, on entry to the CZ, I can see:
CONFLICT ZONE
YUPINI LIMITED
VERSUS
NOVA IMPERIUM
...but if there's any way to actually select one, I haven't found it. So HOW do I sign up as an active participant? When I start shooting Nova Imperium ships, they sorta get the message that I'm hostile, and I get a welcome from Youpini, but how am I still not an active participant???

You have to around with the incredibly counter-intuitive menu navigating keys, assuming you're on PC. It's particularly bad on the comms panel depending on how you've got it set up with tabs. If you're playing on console then I have no clue.

Yeah didnt they say that this action would pick the side for you anyway? I'd like to know the answer.
Until declaring to fight for a side you are an independent third party who happens to attack one (or both) faction's ships. I don't think you would see the progress bars unless you choose a side anyway, which indicates now how long the fighting will go on in that instance.
the whole right hand panel was redesigned.
the "old way" isn't there anymore
tbh, having to re-pledge via the comms-panel every 10 minutes (because scenario reset) is annoying as hell.

oh, i have nothing against the scenarios and how the work
just missing an option to temporary pledge to a side, so i don't have to repeat that step everytime
