Engineers how do I get collector limpits to work?

They act as ammo not commodities. Go to a station and hit the re-stock to fill your cargo with collectors.

General advice from me would be to go for about 75% of what you want to collect if mining or probably around 25% if combat collecting. (Say you have 40T and are mining, take ~30T of limpets).

Purchase limpets from the "restock" tab on the left at appropriate stations. Most people say 75%. It depends somewhat on where, what and how you mine. I settled on packing 50 or 52 limpets for 64 tons + 10 bin refinery (74 tons total). You can always throw limpets away, but not having enough is frustrating. (filling 100% would be annoying because you'd have to juggle more ores in your refinery bins)

Also, do not "target" fragments. It causes the limpets to self-destruct after delivering them.

Aye. Target nothing, then activate them. Also, which ship are you using?

If you can afford a small module slot, also bring prospector limpets. Those you use by aiming at an asteroid and launching it. It's advantage is not only that you know what materials the asteroid holds, but an asteroid with a prospector limpet on it actually spawns more fragments.

That being said, if you fly a ship with prospector limpets and two mining lasers, you might also want two collector limpet modules, to increase collecting speed.

do I need more than one refinery? I am using an anaconda.
Thanks for the advice about not targeting fragments

I think you can only have one refinery.

IMO only fire a prospector when you see ores you really want, otherwise your limpets will run out fast. Knock one chunk off to see what's in there. If it's good stuff, fire a prospector.

For mining, find 'pristine' rings (system map - click on ring and look at second tab) and if you're shooting prospector limpets at asteroids, go for the medium or high content ones. However, I find it doesn't hurt to mine the low ones and I still get chromium, sulphur and other engineering must haves from those.

Also, careful not to target any fragments or cargo, because the collector limpet only brings that back and then expires. If in doubt, detarget everything before firing your collectors. I.e., if you have nothing targetted, a single limpet will keep fetching more (although sometimes they expire from damage too).

First time mining. Bought a refinery, mining lasers, and collector limpits, but on the hud it says out of ammo.

Also, I'll comment that the 5A collector limpet controller seems like a bad deal versus the 3A model to me. It only controls one more limpet but it weighs 24 tons(!!!) more than the 3A collector limpet controller and costs an extra 700000. I always get the 3A controller even when a 5A will fit.

I am a believer in the 4A refinery with 10 bins. Having those extra 2-3 bins really helps when you're getting near to a full load and juggling things rapidly. Also, an extra 1-3 tons of an ore can be the difference between fulfilling a mining mission now versus having to make another mining trip to finish it.

An Anaconda can power 3 2D mining lasers with no issues, which will strip a roid in seconds. Get controllers for 4-5 active limpets per mining laser. I suggest 3 - 5A and 2 - 3A collector limpet controllers. Active limpets make far more difference than lots of hull space.
Make sure you have a prospector, one 1A is enough.
