Newcomer / Intro How do i navigate a long trip

I have tried using the galaxy map, I want to do a 110ly trip with a 22 ly frameshift. I have no idea how to plan a route on the map. Totally confused:S

If you click on the system you want to get to a box of options come up. One is of those, that has a series of connected lines on it is the route planner. Click on it and it will work out the route to get there, either economical or fastest.

It can be a bit troublesome but very possible. From the galaxy map be sure to select your target world and decide/select if you are going to take the fastest route or the most economical route. I then rotate the camera to get my beginning point and end point lined up visually so that I can zoom in and watch as the jump connections are made by the computer. I then find the furthest system that is connected with a jump line and select that system as a intermediate point. Sometimes when I do this, the computer will make more jump line associations and you can add a couple more jumps into the equation. Generally, I can get to about 80 to 90 ly before I have to do it all over again.

It really comes down to getting comfortable manipulating the galaxy map. Spend some time with the controls and that will help out big time with figuring out how to plan a really long trip.

Hope that helps. If it doesn't, do some searching on youtube. Im guessing there may be a few videos out there.

Cheers,

When you go to the galaxy map it draws out a web of blue lines to all the places you can reach with your current amount of fuel and cargo. The thing that catches people out is that it can take quite a LONG time (maybe up to a minute?) to finish drawing this web (I think there's a pretty heavy graph plotting calculation involved here). If you watch carefully you'll see it slowly adding in new lines. You can tell when it's (nearly) finished as dotted blue lines will start appearing at the edges of the web (these are jumps you could make if you weren't carrying so much cargo). This goes for the ability to click a star and plot a route to it too (i.e. you won't be able to do that until the blue web has reached that star). Once it's finished (or has at least started doing the dotted lines), if you then plot a route to the extremities of the solid blue web you should find your fuel tanks are pretty much empty when you get there.
IMPORTANT - if you don't have a fuel scoop make damn sure the system you've plotted a route to has a station (via the system map) otherwise you'll find yourself stranded with no option but to self destruct!

What he said too!

It's really troublesome for long route.
Recently I've used http://www.miggy.org/games/elite-dangerous/routes/

It gives you a route that should work, then I use the galaxy map to set a first destination on a system (from the route) at ~90LY. Never been able to do more and it's tricky but it works.
Once arrived at this destination, I go back to the galaxy map and start again, until I reach the en goal.

Don't forget to look at star type if you need for fuel scoop and don't forget to select "Fastest route" in the galaxy map ^^

This a million times. I just assumed (like Eve), you can pick a system, and a route gets drawn. Nuh-uh. I have found, provided you wait a while, it draws out to about 70ly, then gives up. So, plot about 70ly, then when you're there, do another 70 etc.

I keep getting a "No route to system" error message whenever I try to go longer than 10 lys away from my location. Anyone else having this issue?
It seems to be related to my fuel range.

If you don't have enough jump range there is some destinations you won't be able to reach.
What is your jump range ?
From where to where are you trying to go ?

I think I was trying to get from one of the systems off enervate to ephesus. I was able to navigate to ephesus manually going back through LH starting system.

Hi,

There is a button on the galaxy map that will set up a route for you. I think it's called route planner, follow that route and make sure you have enough fuel :D

It can also be a situation that happens when you set up your route BEFORE loading up on cargo. The added weight can significantly change your allowable distance per jump which in turn means you may have to set up a completely different route. I do it all the time and it can be frustrating. :)

lol thought it was just me.
I now move the slider to max for the cargo before I click plot route

The "spiderweb" is limited to 100ly radius. What you can do is use an external tool like this one to plot the entire route, then pick out intermediate systems in chunks of 100ly or less to plot multijump routes in the galmap.
