Engineers how do I unlock PROFESSOR PALIN

Start with Elvira Martuk. She wants you to have travelled 300 ly from start, then get her 3T of Soontill relics. You need to rank her up to grade 3.5 to get the invite from Marco Qwent. He won't deal with you until you have a Sirius permit, which means running a few missions for Sirius Corp around Sirius. When you have the permit, he wants 25 tons of modular terminals, which you get as mission rewards from some places. You need to research that separately. When you have him up to grade 3.5 and you've travelled 5000 ly from start , you get an invite from Pof. Palin. Before he'll deal with you, he wants 25 unknown fragments.

Have fun!

Ignorant question... if I complete the 'you've travelled 5000 Ly from start' part of the requirement before the other stages e.g.: Unlocking Marco Qwent etc, do I have to go out and do *another* 5,000+ LY trip?

I ask because I'm sure to complete that long of a trip well before I spend the time on unlocking more engineers,

No you don't, if memory serves me correctly. You can do the trip now. However, you'd better fly 5500 or 6000 instead of 5000, to allow for any discrepancies in calculating distance.

As soon as Palin comes up, and if you have that requirement done, then he is unlocked.

Why has this whole unlocking process be a linear timesink threadmill?

Couldn't they have done something along the lines that you EITHER go for the linear threadmill with the other two blokes OR go for the 5k Ly to get his invite?

Given how ED is meant to be all about choosing your path is there little choice for engineers: yes or no...

Yes, fun indeed. A trip of 5000ly is not exactly hard work for many of us and not an unreasonable request for an explorer type engineer to ask

I see that lori jameson requires dangerous combat rating and i'm only master. Now that will be a challenge for me!

Yes, for me too. I'm only rated Competent, even after all this time :)

Engineers are hyper-talented people who have hyper-specific needs so it makes sense.

That being said, forcing players who want good thrusters on their Corvettes to travel 5000ly is literally psychological torture.

Use an ASPX instead... That task can be made easy atleast, but there's no such option for getting around unlocking the two other twigs before even getting to need the 5k Ly, not to mention that sirius permit nonsense. Whenever or not that is even fixed at this point.

Yea, Seriously. From all the conversations that i have had about engineers and this, I figured out they want you to go for the linear threadmill rather then
the pick & choose of engineers. They want you to take the time to do the grind & enjoy the game. The only reason why i can think to do the grind & all that
is to be OCD about doing everything.
I prefer to do my own thing & enjoy what i do in the game. rather have to do grindy thing of stuff i don't want to do for a while, to get an engineer upgrade
i want & need which is unrelated to the activity i just had to grind.

in short, there is little choice for engineers. in the long answer, getting to engineers should be more open and sandboxy............
meaning you should be able to skip the first two people to get to the third

funny thing about that.............. that whole linear path is bugged. if you are lucky, bugs can mean you can jump from martuuk to palin

Prepare for a nasty surprise: as long as you haven't access to Shinrarta Dezhra (due to being alpha backer, lucky beta backer without commander reset inbetween or already 'elite' in another profession), you won't see the lady for quite a while ...

Zackly my point. For those of of us who are rubbish at or uninterested in combat, some of the engineeers are unattainable. Basically Lori and the one that requires 1m in combat bonds. Whereas everything else is ridiculously easy. Such as anything involving trade, exploration, mining, unlocking permits, rares etc. Once i had got the invite for palin, i had done 5k trips many times over.

So i have two choices to make. I can forsake what these engineers have to offer. Which is very little from what i can see. Or i can start loads and loads of threads bemoaning how difficult and grindy it is doing this stuff in the hope that the combined lobbying power will cause FD to have a rethink and dumb it all down yet again. Which seems to be quite successful it seems.

I think what im saying is that if you want your L5 dirty drives then you have to earn them. If you aint prepared to put in the effort then dont have them. All my ships now have this mod and very nice it is too. But i could live without...

I have no issue with dealing with Palin's crap for the drives, but I DO have an issue having to deal with Elvira's crap just to unlock dealing with Marco's crap to unlock Palin's. And then there's the stupid permit somewhere in the middle.

Also how else besides opening threads and complaining about are we supposed to let them know that their linear unlock paths are bad in a game that praises it's freedom of choosing your path? Yes or no isn't a path choice, it's no more than the choice to move at all or not.

But someone who obviously has all unlocked already except the few which offer nothing special has an easy say on that.

I guess there is no other way and doing so is absolutely legit as long as you also accept that this "we" doesn't include all other players and those have the rigth to express their opinion as well (which you never denied).

Personally, I really enjoy the engineers and this explicitly includes the various ways to unlock them! Different folks and differnt strokes and so on, I guess ... :)

Erm shouldnt that read 'let them know that in your opinion their linear upgrade paths are bad etc etc...'

Agree with yr post and repped it but dont assume that you speak for 'everyone '

I do think the path from elvira to palin via marco is a particularly arduous with a lot of similarly based activities that dont seem to sit with the ultimate goal of those lovely thrusters. Marco doesnt really to serve any real purpose on his own. Im intrigued that he has been chosen in the beta as the repository of all blueprints for fish...

Ive been to colonia and back. I have elvira Grade 5. I have sirius permit. What am I missing? Do I need to do another 5k trip? -- Just wondering before I start.
